1.
Thanks, Eric.
I have tried pulling the leader to different parts of the indicator and even past it. I even tried cutting off the narrow part of the leader so that both sets of teeth would be in the sprocket holes.
So far nothing has helped.

 2.
Thanks, Eric. I searched earlier threads and didn't see a definite answer, but you're right, it's acting like it's time to rewind the roll.
I hope I can find a way to fix this, rather than deal with a return, which is usually a hassle. There are some bodies for sale in working condition for about $60, and I would be open to getting one of those and scavenging the prism and battery packs off this one.

 3.
I bought an F4 on Ebay and it seems to be in good shape, or at least it hasn't been obviously mistreated. I've run into a problem, though, and hoped some of you might be able to make some suggestions, since I've never used an F4 before and it's a pretty complex machine.
When I load film, close the door, and press the shutter release, it advances to the first frame, as it should. Push the button again, though, and the film advances several frames and then the red alert LED comes on. Reload and the same thing happens. This has happened with both bulk-loaded and regular film, so it's not a problem with individual rolls or types of rolls.
Can anyone think of something I might be missing here?
Thanks!
