  1. Here is a very interesting historical account of camera and lens companies that were born and thrived in Rochester NY from around 1890 through the mid-20th century. It's an amazing mix of personalities with scientific, creative and business skills competing, thriving and prospering (sometimes only briefly) in a single city. Rochester was clearly the precursor of "silicon valley". Sadly it's time of thriving has long since passed. Link here.

  2. What do you mean by lifespan? The DSLT (not DSLR) line from Sony is considered dead a long time ago. Although I think both Canon and Nikon won't introduce new DSLR any more. But still what do you mean by the lifespan? The camera will last until it break. Unlike film where you have to depend on consumables the DSLR can't be obsolete so easy. Yes they could when you can't buy batteries, memory card or typical image editing software won't support the file format but those are unlikely to happen before the camera breaks.

Good question. My choice of 'lifespan' was not the best. Clearly many SLRs are still 'alive' today, I have a Nikon F100. Also DSLRs will still be around and in use for decades to come. Given the article that I was linking and that prompted my post, I was referring to the production of new models. My 'lifespan' meant time from the introduction and production of the concept to the end of production - the date when the last item of that concept rolls off the assembly line.

  3. Update: If you supply documentation of a recent negative COVID test, quarantine isn’t required or suggested.

    HAWAII

Hmmm, I read you link and it says "within 72 hours of boarding". But note, just 2 weeks ago I had an acquaintance who planned a trip to Hawaii to celebrate his wife's 40th birthday. They got their COVID test "72 hours in advance" but when they landed in Hawaii and showed the results, the authorities there based the 72 hour window on Hawaii time. So since my friend took the test in the mainland using local clocks, say for example noon in CA (so 8AM in HI) 72 hours before a noon landing in HI, again local time in HI, the elapsed time from test to landing was 72+4 hours (but clearly less than 72 hours before boarding). Based on this arithmetic, the authorities in HI would not allow their entry unless they quarantined. Since this would ruin their planned trip, they were give a night in an airport hotel and had to return to the mainland the next day. Vacation ruined because of bureaucratic nonsense.

So to be safe don't get tested too early before your flight.

  4. Thanks for posting the link. This is a great story with great photographs.

When I saw the first photograph in the story I had to admit the photographer had great taste and a great eye for Americana. I was passing through Salina UT back in 2016 and I was captured by the same scene. Below is one of several I got of the cafe. Seeing his version I regret not returning after sunset.
