1.
Searching : "rubber wrenches." Must be similar to "strap wrenches." The rubber band on a strap wrench isn't narrow enough. Strap wrenches are @ 1/2" wide rubber. Outer rings on a Summitar that need to be separated are several mm wide - if that. CLA wrenches are less than 3mm wide. Two large CLA wrenches will do the job. Important - as Gus says - to go very easy on applying the torque force.

Read it helps to apply QTips dabbed with Lighter fluid (not WD-40) around the outer rings line of separation. Careful to apply just a dab around the ring line. Let only a bit of lighter fluid seep in. Loosen up metal - not invade the lens. Worked loosening the Front Lens Group. When the 2md CLA wrench arrives later this month I'll let you know the rest of the story.

 2.
Its years since this post was made; however, in light of disassembling a tight unmoving lens, I've been told "rubber wrenches" ie "strap wrenches" might due the job well by exerting even force to prevent the binding of a lens ring when severe pressure is applied. Strap wrenches are not narrow. That's where a CLA wrench (3mm wide) can do the job. No matter - be careful applying pressure - uneven force can break a lens. Use torque sparingly. Work slow and steady. Put a rubber kitchen glove over the lens between the CLA wrench and the lens. Take this advice at your own risk. Search / read - see what others do. Who's happy. Do what they did. Turn over every stone. Good Luck!!!

 3.
One last thought for now - just bought a 2nd set of CLA wrenches (Large wrench inside diameter 41.5 mm). Now, I'll have two large wrenches to operate on the outer ring on the Summitar lens. Doing this to see if it's true that the fingerprint is on the inner lens side of the 1st element. It's worth the try. Plan: Work slowly and carefully. Searched for rubber wrenches thin enough to remove lens rings. Must be a secret custom job!! Agree that even force is best. Might slip a rubber kitchen glove around the summitar lens ring, then use the 2 CLA wrenches to gently torque the outer ring off. The rubber glove over the lens will 1) protect the glass and 2) ensure equal grip/ pressure. We'll see!!! The 2nd wrench arrives NYC late Jan 2016.

Thanks Gus for advice on opening lens. Very helpful. A+++. Brian - read how some people use a car tire to grip the outer ring of a lens as the force will all be equal. Amazing.

 4.
Rubber wrenches - where can I find one narrow enough to work on separating the outermost ring on the Summiter Lens? The CLA wrench from China is 3mm wide.

 5.
BTW - any special formulas you use to clean a lens?

 6.
Lens recently bought off Ebay - had the finger print / mark on it - discovered this when shining light through the lens. Ken Rockwell flashlight test. Lens glass overall looks clear. Some dust. Don't really want to test this further until either 1) I get a second CLA wrench to open the outermost ring, or 2) have a lens pro look at this. Rubbing the front on a mousepad didn't do anything. Tried rubber gloves to get a grip. Concerned about damaging rings and lenses. Gus mentioned separation - last photo shows rainbow color. When I check light through the front group only, the light is clear. The Rainbow only appears when I assemble the entire lens and shine a light through the entire lens. Distortion effect from the table top clamp lamp? Buying a lens is an amazing challenge. Hoping this can be worked out. Again, comments are very welcome. So much to learn!!! I see people here have special tricks and tools to do the job. It's a medieval art!!!

 7.
Summitar 50mm Optics

Grip was very very gentle - just enough torque to move the tight non-moving ring. When I look at the removed Front Lens Group, the fingerprint seems in the glass near the surface. Hard to tell by viewing the photos. I like the idea of heat / rubber wrenches. Using a rubber mousepad - the ring never would have come undone. It was really put on tight. When I removed the Front Lens Group, It came off very slowly with full awareness of the situation. No rings were bent - hardly used any force. Arm of wrench + torque did the job. The fact that there's a fingerprint inside the lens tells me whoever made / serviced this lens was not doing the right thing. Whatever I try now, I will be very careful. Glad for pointers. If I can't undo this it's not the end of the world. I'll ask a PRO to do the work. If I can open the outer ring, it'd be great to try to lightly remove off the marks, and learn about lens repair.

 8.
Hi. Have mark / fingerprint that I believe is behind the 1st lens element in a Summitar 50mm lens.

Using CLA wrench, have opened the front lens group. Mark is within this lens group - again it seems to be behind the 1st lens of that group.

This following reference post shows a disassembled Summitar lens - from this forum - it does not explain how this was done. Especially how the outermost ring was opened / removed.

According to the people in China where I bought the CLA wrench, two CLA wrenches are needed to do the job.
Just checking to see what people here have to say. Thanks!!
