1.
Rohin,
do you mean the EF-S 15-85 mm f/3,5-5,6 IS USM? Isn't a bit dark?

I know that a lens is (almost) for life, but at the moment I'm stuck in the middle ages of DSLR (10mpx, 1600 ISO max, no video, no viewfinder, 10 yr old CMOS sensor, and so on) so I need a quantum leap that could last for a few years (still keeping an eye on the budget).

Getting the most from your suggestions, I see two options for me (a bit over-budgeted, but I could expect it asking on this forum :-) ):
- 70D + a good everyday zoom lens (for example, the EF-S 15-85 Rohin suggested)
- 6D keeping my EF 24-85, loosing maybe something on lens IQ which I could resolve maybe in the near future

On which of the two would you bet your 2 cents?

Stefano

 2.
@Rohin

I'd like to go FF but I cannot afford the mid term expenses for a body, a few lens and other stuff (I miss an expernal flash, too).

Concerning the 18-135, the reason you wouldn't use it is because 18mm is too long for a EF-S?

 3.
First of all, thank you for the prompt response.

@Kerry
As for now, night sky photography is something I'd like to try and learn, but I don't believe it will take much of the share, at least at the beginning. Even considering that I live nearby a main town with few chances of clear night sky without travelling. As for the 6D, is surely a "wow" body but over my budget (more than double of that of a 7D).

I'will surely get the advice for the fast wide lens. If you have suggestions for a lens to copy with a crop Canon body, I'll appreciate very much. I can share it with the 400d (that of course I'm not going to trash :-))

@Wouter
I'm well aware of the different construction of the 7D body (many times I held it at the store :-(), even tough I've never used it on the road. But after more than a decade of full amateur photography, time as come for a step ahead. And, as said before, I'll still have my Rebel for lightweight trips.

I've read the comparison between 7D and 70D but cannot get why 70D is a compromise against 7D (a part from 100% viewfinder, a slight faster fps)

Stefano

 4.
Hi there,

I own a EOS 400D and after 10 years of valuable service it's time for an upgrade. Moreover, I'd like to change my general purpose lens (a EF 24-85 1:3.5-4.5 USM).
I have a budget of approximately 1.000 EUR/USD and my choice fell on a 7D + EF-S 18-135mm f/3,5-5,6 IS STM kit, leveraging on the price drop of the 7D after the release of the MkII.

My fear is that the 7D is a bit outdated and so I'm looking at the 700D/750D body as an alternative, with the same kit lens.
I'm an hobbyist shooting mainly landscape/wildlife and travel, and of course family portraits. I'd like to venture into night sky photography, so high ISO performance is a key factor.

Any suggestion/comment is nore than welcome.

Thanks in advance
Stefano
