1.
the camera lens acts the same way the eye does the higher the f stop the greater the the sharpness on the depth of scale .the lower the f stop the the focal point wil be sharp and every thing else blurry before and after the focal point . You can't achieve these affects if you use the automatic settings on a digital camera. You will have to use the aperture priority settings so you can use a higher f stop which may make the camera need a slower shutter speed .Which may requier you to use a tripod ,so the camera doesn't move during the exposure.

 2.
if you are gonna do landscapes you are gonna need a 28 mm type lens or hav a very good optical lens and camera that can do maybe a 2 or three shot panoramic that you can compose on the pc .if you want sharpness in the digital age you need to use a tripod . in the film age you need a tri pod also . there was the grain of the film you could see .the slower the film speed the finer the grain.the faster the film like tri x pan the large the grain on the emulsion of the film .panatomic x had the fineset grain in a b&W film .But the film speed was 1/64 or 1/32 of a second
tri x is 1/500 of a second
