1.

I currently have a 24mm 2.8 D prime lens and a 50mm 1.8 prime lens and was thinking of trading them both in and getting the 24 - 70mm lens instead.

Why would you want to do that?

I did just the opposite: traded the zoom for two price and am happier now.

The primes are more convenient and IQ is similar at equal settings. The primes may be old buut they're function properly.

 2.
None of that is really worth 2000 usd to me.

I question if AF coverage is any better; the coverage is the same as d700, that is all cramped in the center. More AF points within the same area.

Higher ISO... d700 is clean till iso 2000. That's plenty enough. However, what I could use is select auto ISO without having to dig in the menu, and be able to change ISO with the Fn button.

Higher ISO doesn't mean anything to me if I can't focus in dim light. The absence of an AF assist light on the d800 is a step back.

 3.

the difference is not $2,000

If I buy a new d800 today, I'll pay 3k. I'll get around 1k for a used d700. So yes, an "upgrade" will cost me 2000 usd.

Question is, is it a sensible upgrade, is it an upgrade at all and if so, what does a d800 really buy me considering I don't care about video and don't print larger than A3.

 4.
If you don't print larger than A3 and if you claim pictures taken with afd lenses won't look worse on 36 mpx than on 12 mpx, what's the point of buying a hi res camera?

The choice depends a lot on why you want to replace a D700, what you use it for and which characteristics matter most to you.

Why would anybody want to replace a d700 with a d800 if resolution and video are meaningless to them?
What does the extra 2000 dollars really buy me?

 5.

No, your photos will not look worse on a 36 MP body than they will on a 12 MP body.

And if you don't downsample, will the afd lens look good on 24-36 MPx?

The choice depends a lot on why you want to replace a D700, what you use it for and which characteristics matter most to you.

Why would anybody want to replace a d700 by d800 if resolution and video are meaningless to them? What does the extra 2000 dollars really buy me?

 6.
Can I successfully use older afd lenses like 20/2.8, 35/2.0, 50/1.4, 85/1.4... on 24 mpx cameras (d3x) or even 36 mpx (d800) ?

What's the catch with high res cams? Will my pictures actually look worse than using the lenses on a 12 mpx cam (d700) ?

 7.
Will shooting handheld video with non-stabilized tele lenses create motion blur?
