14.
Good tip re the plastic tray with sorting compartments. thanks Les! Guess there will be many of them. Don't know what a vacuum desoldering tool is but will find out. I like tinkering around and have good basic tools including small screw drivers jeweller's type. Just wondered if there may be camera specific tools that are needed.
Found some camera repair sites in the meantime and in case anyone wants to tackle something similar (as you obviously have done successfully Les) here are the links
http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/articles.html
http://www.4photos.de/camera-diy/index-en.html
And looking through this , voila!

    Nikon F4

Newbie on this excellent site. I have two Nikon F4 cameras but one has a fault since being bought on the internet (which did come with a working MF23 data-back which I transferred to the second F4s also bought off the internet) The first seller wouldn't wear the problem and the repair people here weren't that interested and charges just for looking and not necessarily being able to fix were half the price of getting another one.
I'd love to get the second camera working and tackle the repair myself and wondered if anyone has advice. From the pdf repair manual and fault analysis I think have to disassemble the film advancement unit (top right) and if I am lucky it may simply be a case of reconnecting a grey wire. Anyway if I don't succeed it will at least satisfy me that I've tried and it will be interesting. I may at the end of it have a second working camera rather than it sitting around and annoying me.
Has anybody taken this camera or this section of it apart? Do I need special tools? There is a youtube video of a Japanese guy fixing something on an F4 and he has an impressive box full of tools - doesn't seem to use many though. Unfortunately don't speak Japanese and he doesn't seem to be repairing the bit I'm interested in - see It is quite impressive to see what they squeezed into this essentially mechanical camera.
http://imaging.nikon.com/history/chronicle/history-f4/img/421al.jpg
Can anyone help.
Oh - just for others who want to repair this camera here is are useful links to get a free copy of the repair manual.
http://cameraobscura.zenfolio.com/nikon_f4s-repair.pdf
http://www.micro-tools.com/pdf/nikon/pdf/F4S/F3SERV.PDF
