1.
The MTF on the 500mm is simply amazing! At 3kg weight only (as low as the old manual focus P) the 500mm combines superlight weight with supreme optics.A instant dream lens.
However, I am more interested in the DX body which will go with the 16-80 zoom.Do Nikon have a ready to go d400?

 2.
Pointed at some grass/flowers/background behind.Distance between 7-8 and 20meters (20-60ft).
When focused on a small perched bird - fine most of the time.
When focused for birds in flight, specially middle and near distance it hunts. It hunted so bad when tried to focus on a landing seagulls on a perch, with darkgrey boat in background. And the gulls are shining white, so plenty of contrast. If its not working for action and BIF, I wil have to return it, sadly.

 3.
Hello,
I bought yesterday a used 500mm af-s I lens.I took it out to test it today, but I am confused about severe focus hunting, while using both af-c 9 points and 1 point on my d7000.See (and hear) the video below, let me know what you think should I return it to the seller?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTI3FTuofpQ

 4.
Thanks for the comment,Shun.I do use my 500mm P with monopod 99%of the time.300 with 2x is going to be slower then 500mm with or without a 1,4x.I just have to find one af-s II to buy. When I do, I will post some pictures with it:)

 5.
Hey guys, as I am still looking for a used 500mm af-s II a friend of mine is encouraging me to go for a used vr version. Is it that huge of an optical difference between vr and af-s II, to exclude the vr options that it brings?
Another option is to go for 300mm vr or vr II plus tc-20e III to get 600mm.How is the focus speed then?Enough for BIF or action shots?
Really confused about the choises, I can get one supertele and want to be happy with it:)

 6.
Ilkka, its not about that d7200 is not d400.Its about that there is no d400 at all.

 7.
Well if it doesnt have the group area focus the claims that is a competitor of the 7d2 are nonesense. So is the poor 6fs vs 10fps on the Canon.Question is, are we ever going to get a true d400?

 8.
Does it really have the "Group Area" AF and if yes, how does it perform with BIF and fast approaching objects?

 9.
Yes, Joe, I will actually combo the P and the tc14b for the sell, they work wonderful together.Cant say the same for the tc-16a though, which I will sell too.Allready got responce for the P, but finding a relative cheap afs II is harder (in Europe).Looking forward to the new lens and the new opportunities:)

 10.
You said it, Georges, exercise in frustration.Could said it better myself.I will start looking for a good used lens:)

 11.
Indeed it is, had to learn it the hard way.I got good actions shots with this lens, but way too few. Here are some of them:https://500px.com/DilomSki

 12.
Getting really tired of missing good shots with my Nikkor 500mm P manual focus lens.Although optically superb, the lack of AF is really a downside, which takes a LOT of good shots resulting in slight blur instead of tack sharp.
I am thinking of selling it and buying a used af-s I or II model, prefer the II, main reason - 3,4kg vs 3,8kg of the af-s I.Are they other differences, specially the focus speed (d7000 body) and weather sealing (shooting in some rain)? What should I get?
I dont like VR, dont need it for BIF, so I aint interested in both VR versions.

 13.
I agree, Mike.Have to test it more.Today I got finally my tripod (Induro AT313) and first tests with it and a gimbal head show proper focus, at least in the far range.Have to test it more with near targets and with ruler, while on the tripod.

 14.
I read that you can correct backfocus like this with adding shims.
The shims are placed in between the underside of the prism and the focussing screen.
AF function is not affected by the focus screen or shims.
If you focus the subject in the viewfinder to be sharp, but the image is focussed further to the backround this is back focus. To correct this you need to fit a THICKER shim in place in between the prism and the focus screen.

 15.
I dont know really, but both need to be adjusted.

 16.
Liveview sharpness is better, but I guess also because its set to iso 100 (no auto iso in liveview, that I use when shooting birds otherwise). But still, its not perfect. And to compare, I tried the body with my AI 50mm f1,4 lens, which showed also backfocus, in and out of liveview.I guess the fault is more to the body, and I will check the lens with d7100 when I get the chance soon.Otherwise a truly great lens, the P, but way to many missed shots can ruin every day of shooting.Opinions on the 300 2,8 AF-S II?The 500 f4 AF-S is a bit expensive for me now.

 17.
Hello fellow wildlifers!
Today was a bad day for shooting.Again.My d7000 with Nikkor 500mm f4 P was a disaster again.I see the birds clearly in focus in the VF, the focus assist says in focus too.Take the pic and see after that is totally backfocused. Many times.Other dude tried it too, same effect.Getting really tired of this things.A while ago I was shooting the great bittern eating fishes - 100 pictures, ALL not in focus.Really hurts at the end of the day.
Question is - what if I sell the P and my other 300mm f4 af screwdrive lens and just buy a 300mm f2,8 af-s II?
Its it a good choise, af enough fast for action and good with use of 1,4 and 2x convertors? Thanks in advance for any opionions!

 18.
I see 5 current FX line bodies - D610, D750, D810, D4s, Df, not to mention D810a.
I see 3 current DX line bodies - D3300, D5300, D7200.
So 5 vs 3, with not a single pro-DX camera. To me, its a clear sign that at the moment Nikon is not thinking enough about DX users.

 19.
Thanks for the comment, Andrew.I will check some monopods and see what happens.

 20.
Andrew, you are right - sometimes is tougher to find the subject in the viewfinder (specially if its in a perfect blue sky) then to manual focus it.I am using d7000.By the way, do you have any opinions on monopod for the 500 P, my old Gitzo which came with the lens as a gift broke, so I am looking for a new monopod.Question - aluminium or carbon fiber, going to use it mainly in the ponds - a lot of water, mud, reeds.

 21.
Thanks for sharing guys!
I will probably use some pro-help too, since I aint good with these things anyway.I am just hoping for some autofocus with my 500 f4 P as well.

 22.
Hi all,
I bought an unmodified tc-16a and tried to modify it, but got stuck. While trying to put it back together, had it tough due using a little bigger wire. Then the soldering on the circuit print fell together with the copper place on position 3.Now all I have is this (picture below).Any sudgestions how to make it work?
Plus, I cant find the cpu.
Thanks in advance for any comments!

 23.
Ilkka, I havent tested it with other lenses.I have also a 300mm AF f4 (non AFS) and I havent got that many difficulties with manual focusing it as with the 500mm.

 24.
Yes Shun, its exactly the manual focus AI-P lens.I really saw the difference between liveview focusing and through the viewfinder - liveview is sharper.Too bad, that is not appropriate for every situation, but at least for perched or static birds is great - the best situation actually is the bitterns alarm stance - the bird doesn move at all :)

 25.
Hello,
I bought an used Nikkor 500mm f4 P 2 months ago.I must say its a fantastic lens and when I nail the focus is sharp, very sharp on my D7000.Anyway, the one thing thats bothering me is the backfocus issue. It seems like on greater distances - above 30m and more to see the bird sharp in the viewfinder, but on the photo the birds is out of focus and the focus area is just behind the bird.Happened many, many times.I am talking wading, relaxed birds, not fast birds in flight. So I made a diy microadjustment focus tool and tested the lens from the minimal distance of 5m.It seems that its slighty backfocused a bit, but I aint 100% sure about it.Anyway I dialed -8 on the AF fine tune to get the dot (manual focus assist) correct and I will test it in field.
But anyway, have you expirienced something like this, or is it just me?If it is really an issue, can it be adjusted from Nikons side, or it will be pretty expensive?
I already have many keepers with this lens, its just that the procent of the good ones is very low.I am using a monopod.
