1.
Nothing special this week. I'm on the road, as always, and here are three from the last couple of days.

These are Japanese employees doing their morning stretching outside my hotel in Tokyo. They really do that kind of thing here.

 2.
Somewhere inside this underwater housing is a Canon 7D. I'm guessing the housing costs as much as the camera.

 3.
No shooting again this week (yet), but I'm still scanning old 35mm slides. Here's a shot from my dorm room from 1977. That's San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge on the horizon.

 4.
Here’s a photo of the reactor core submerged in a pool of water. That blue glow is Cerenkov radiation which is caused by electrons leaving the core going faster than the speed of light in water. As Einstein taught us, the speed of light in a vacuum is a constant, but it can be slower in other mediums. In this case, the electrons enter the water from the core going faster than the speed of light in water, so they have to slow down. They emit Cerenkov radiation to dissipate energy as they slow.

 5.
I haven’t shot much in the last week, but I’ve been scanning a few old Kodachrome slides and here are a couple of samples. They turned out okay, I suppose, considering they’ve been sitting in a carousel in the closet for the last 40 years. The hard part was getting the dust and dirt off them since IR cleaning doesn’t work on Kodachrome.

Many (many!) years ago I took a nuclear engineering course while a student at UC Berkeley. Few people knew about it, but we had a small research reactor on campus and one afternoon we took a tour. I understand the reactor has since been shut down.

 6.
Thanks, everybody. Great information, as always. That's why I love this site.

 7.
I thought this guy was pretty good until he mentioned Nikon. Oh, well....

http://vimeo.com/100279964
Be sure to watch in full screen mode.

 8.
Yup, I'm part way through a 90-minute video on automating Lightroom and the presenter has suggested importing at 1:1 to save time later. I was looking for a ballpark guess on how much bigger the preview cache would be if all previews were stored at 1:1 instead of standard. I realize there are a lot of variables but something along the lines of "not so big" to "freakin' huge" would be helpful.

Here is the video, in case you're interested. So far, it's pretty good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFTEJoK3-8s

 9.
Does anyone have a ballpark figure for how much larger the Lightroom preview cache would be if it was completely filled with 1:1 previews instead of, say, medium standard previews at 2048 pixels. Would it be twice as large, or three times as large, or ten times as large? Any ideas?

Cheers,
Dave

 10.
Here’s the mighty C-5 Galaxy, which is a giant cargo airplane. Those protuberances on the visor (nose) are new and interesting. C-5s have been fitted with an anti-missile self-defense system. If those sensors detect a missile fired at the aircraft, they will direct and fire a laser from the aircraft to blind the missile and destroy its tracking solution.

 11.
The two solo pilots.

 12.
We had the summer airshow at the local Air Force base recently and the Thunderbirds performed. It’s nice to see the military demonstration teams flying again.

 13.
John -- can you post a link to the instructional video? Thanks.

 14.
Many thanks. It make sense.

0.6 = ND 4 = 2 stops = 25% transmission = most popular according to B&H.

Some landscape images are really improved when you smooth out waves or waterfalls or whatever with a long exposure that an ND can provide.

Cheers,
Dave

 15.
Thanks, everybody. Much appreciated. I'm about to run out the door, but I will read all your comments very carefully later today.

Real quick: No, I didn't mean a graduated ND. Just a plain, ol' solid ND to reduce light. I read Matt Klowskowski's blog and he doesn't use the graduated ND filter anymore because it only works if the horizon is level. He uses a straight ND and layers to adjust skies.

Real quick again: Perhaps there is more than one convention. A 0.6 is two stops. Is an ND 4 equal to 4 stops? The B&H website said a 0.6/2-stop is the most popular.

Gotta run. Thanks again.

 16.
Hi Folks,

This is more of a landscape photography question, but there isn't a Landscape Forum so I'll ask here.

If you only had one ND filter, which strength would you have? 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 or something stronger?

As you might guess, I'm considering one for my Canon 7D and 17-55 f/2.8 lens and I'd be shooting mountains and beaches. Which one should I start with?

Many thanks,
Dave

 17.
Great work this week, everyone. I especially like the photo of the clouds, Robin.

I'm on vacation so I went fishing. Here's a 22-inch cutthroat trout taken on a size 18 dry fly. I released the fish unharmed immediately after taking this photo.

 18.
My answer is no, you shouldn't switch to a PC.

I'm a computer geek (BS in electrical engineering and computer science) and I build my own computers and run Windows on them because the computer itself is one of my hobbies, but I buy Macs for friends and family who just want to turn the machine on and have it work most of the time. Unless you want to bond with your inner geek or unless there is some software package that won't run on a Mac, just stick with what you know and spend your free time taking photos or playing golf or whatever.

 19.
Yep, it sounds like a computer issue instead of a Lightroom issue. Try rebooting as the first thing. Otherwise, it could be a graphics card failure (easy and cheap to replace) or perhaps somebody messed with your color controls or profile. Good luck.

 20.
Looks okay on my computer. I'm not seeing unusual purple or green.

 21.
Delta arriving from New York.

 22.
KLM arriving from Amsterdam.

 23.
Another quick trip to Saint Maarten in the Dutch Antilles this week. Summer is approaching so it was hot and muggy with hazy skies. Not very good for photography and I only shot four images from my balcony at the hotel. Here are three of them....
