the other thing i was considering was going really cheap and getting a used rebel for 100-150 with a nicer lens. Any thoughts on this?

thanks everyone, this is very helpful. i was considering a classic 5d for full frame, but not sure it would be worth it since i have full frame with film and don't need giant sized shots. plus, you are correct, the 50mm lens on the 40d would be nice for pretty much anything.

Hello

I am looking in to buying a USED canon DSLR. Right now, I have the Fuji x100 as my digital camera and a Canon Eos-3 film camera with a 50mm lens. I am looking to spend anywhere from 0-$300 on a Canon body, perhaps a 40D or something like that mostly for model photography, portraits, and some street use. I'd really like it to have decent low light capability, be fast and just overall reliable with AF especially and also be able to cover manual shooting well. I do not need full frame, but the camera must shoot RAW. I'm wondering what you would recommend for some of the best used Canon's on the market now. I also always shoot through the viewfinder, so LCD screen is not important to me.

Thanks

Any more thoughts on this topic? I'm also considering the two scanners. Does anyone think the Ai is worth the price?

Thanks Bill, really appreciate it!

Bill, just wondering, which Costco is this that got all new equipment and what are your thoughts now several months down the road in terms of quality?

I was doing some reading about Steve Mccurry and still am amazed at his ability to photograph in low light, though I understand he sometimes uses a tripod. Nonetheless, I am wondering if he was known to push the ISO of his Kodachrome when he shot film. Anyone have any insight on this? Other thoughts or experience pushing slide film? Examples? Thanks

Thanks Wally, that does help, I'm looking at the SC28 or the Nisson SC01. They seem to work with the x100, but I just want to make sure they would also work with the EF-42 torch. Any thoughts on which would be better or if they would both be options?

I'm not interested in TTL. I just want manual. So am looking for a sync cord with adapters that work with the x100 and the EF-42. Anyone using this set up?

Hello,

I have the Fuji x100 and want to begin using a synched external flash. I've looked all over but cannot find a strait recommendation for a compatible sync cord to use with the flash unit. I have the EF-42 already as my flash but was hoping someone could give me some advice as to what sync cord and other connectors to buy in order to use this flash externally.

Also, if you have any recommendations on more straightforward flash units to use, that would be helpful, i really just want to shoot manual and need a straightforward set up that works with this camera.

Thanks

Thank you for the responses, read through lighting 101 and it was very helpful. Would anyone be able to recommend a sync cord set up for the x100 that will work in manual? I have the flash but can't find what sync cord and connectors are compatible. thanks

I am currently using a Fuji x100 and want to begin using flash. I have seen some nice street style portraits done using just the flash as your light source and am interested in doing this as well as low key lighting where you use the flash to illuminate a figure against a black background without having an actual studio setting etc. I only work in the streets and indoors, but not with a full studio set up, so am really interested in finding one flash for these purposes.

I have the EF-42 that came with the camera, but it seems a bit complicated. Also I am unclear how to use this off camera, or if it even can be used off camera. I think it can be used with a wire or perhaps with a wireless unit. I am wondering if anyone has any tips on this type of shooting or thoughts on a different flash that is very straightforward to use for these purposes. i would be interested in selling the EF-42 to get something that is easier to use for these simple techniques. Alternatively, if there are any basic settings for this flash that people have come across, I am not finding much inside this user manual. Any other thoughts would be very helpful.

Sounds good. Picture quality, I guess I mean, sharper photos as well as just being able to hit more in focus and better low light performance. Sounds like the 1N or 3 would make a different compared to the Rebel?

do you think the EOS 3 is worth the upgrade from the Rebel EOS 2000 even if I don't change lenses or film? Do you think the quality of picture will be different?

-

i guess, i'm aiming to use it for travel portraits mostly and just want something that focuses fast and accurately. would you recommend a digital dslr over this?

I currently have a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 and am considering purchasing a Canon EOS-1N as an upgrade for a couple hundred dollars. I mostly use the EF 50 1.8. I am wondering if you think this would be a worthwhile upgrade or not. Will my pictures improve in quality or should I stick with the Rebel and just spend money on nicer lenses.

Also, for digital I use the Fuji x100, and I love it. Overall, I really prefer using film, which is why I am thinking of upgrading the film camera rather than going for an all out Canon DSLR.

Any thoughts?

I have a Canon EOS 2000 film camera, so I think that would be considered full frame. Would either lens work better on this camera? also, would you be able to recommend a particular adapter?

How do I know which version of the Nikon lens is the one to get?

thank you, i appreciate the helpful comments!

Quick vote:
I have a Canon eos 2000 film camera and I'm looking for a lens that is good for portraits both close and medium shot. I'm considering the Canon 85mm f/1.8 EF USM (which I believe will attach no problems) and the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 (which would have to be used with an adapter). I'm not very worried about autofocus, more on which will give me the best results with film.

Any convincing thoughts either way? Any other suggestions in the same price range?

Thanks

Does anyone know what a good price for the Ricoh GR III would be used?
also, is it worth it to get the GR IV over the III, or even wait for the V that seems to be coming out soon.

Thanks
