    Flower Macro

          2

Zinnias (I think) from around my wife's garden. Supposed to keep the

bad bugs away from the fruit and veggies, but they do attract

photographicly inclined husbands. This is scanned from a print made

from a slide. The original has a wider crop on all sides, allowing the

flower and leaf not to touch the photo edge. I'll have to wait until I

get a film scanner to correct this i

  1. Sorry, I don't generally like dismembered heads as subjects. Reminds me too much of those killing fields in Cambodia where they stacked the heads of their victoms. Pretty woman, but please flatter her by attaching her head to her body.

    Karl,

This is real nice, but a more interesting and challenging shot would have gotten rid of the two light reflections (from your overhead box) at the base curves of the neck bottle. Also, try it from a different angle, how about looking up at the bottle label. By the way, tell me you didn't freeze the beer too. Hate to kill a beer just for a shot, :-). Still, after all is said, a very nice shot.

Pablo, I like the photo and that certain smile. The "tire" or whatever it is in the upper right corner needs to be "Photoshoped out" with the stamp tool. Clone in some more cement and shadows. The other "problem" if it is one, the picture seems slightly soft on the focus. That could be any one of a number of problems not associated with your original slide. Other than those two points, I really like the picture.
  2. I manipulated the color with curves in Photoshop until I found something I liked, and also added a radial blur (not sure of the exact effect name) filter. I've also got a blue solorized breast version that I'll upload later. Thanks for your comments and ratings. Steve Jantscher
  3. Oh to be the younger brother. There's always somebody bigger than you.

I experimented with some late afternoon/early evening lighting and

various levels of fill flash. I love my 'G2, and all I did was to add

a little sharpening to this photo. Let me know what you think, thanks

  4. Leon, there are very few photographs on the forum that I want to look at after seeing the thumbnail. Your's was one, and I'm glad I did. I love the warm colors, and while the center of the spotlight is very exposed, I don't think it detracts from the photo, and actually enhances the shadows. Very nice.

Mario, Is this a composite photo? Something about it doesn't ring true. Also, the T-33 (if I'm correct) in the forground is pretty dirty, even with a gray scheme. I normally like a nice airplane photograph, but this looks fakey.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I like the "blandness" of the photo. A very low contrast, almost shadowless melody of pastel like greens. Looks like you found the by-the-book perfect overcast day. I might try cropping a little of the right side, where you can see through the leaves some, but really it is quite nice just the way you have it. I think a super saturated film wouldn't have capured this quite as delicately.
  5. Mike,

You had a nice scene there, but your problem with a washed out sky would have been fixed to some extent with the use of a graduated neutral density filter. You sky was too bright when compared to the beautiful reflection. Your film could not properly expose both at the same time , so you/your camera exposed properly for the water. With a graduated ND filter, you could have darkened up the sky, bringing it's correct exposure closer to that of the water's, and perhaps gotten them both in one picture. Good luck next time. That sky , judging from its reflection, must have been a doosey. Steve Jantscher PS- By the way, what type of exposure setting did you have in the camera at the time. I'm wondering if it was a Matrix/Evaluative metering selection, which I believe generally tries to guess that the subject most times is below a "bright" sky, and exposed for the darker water in your case.

First thing I said when the thumbnail picture popped up was "I like it". I only can second it when I see the bigger picture. Good job! Steve Jantscher
  6. Jim,

I really like the colors. The misty (rainy) day, together with the fall colors, in a graveyard no less really convey a sense of the end of (or nearing the end of) one's life. It's pleasant to look at, yet it doesn't scream out a message. I like it a lot.

  7. I hate butterflys! What I really mean is that I hate trying to take pictures of them because they like to move too much. Kudos for getting one at all close to in focus. On the plus side, you got a picture of a non-cooperative target, the plane of focus is close to the plane of the wing, the flower is in focus, and the lighting is good. On the "other" side, the cropping of the wing isn't desired, the focus isn't "there" on the wing, and something is in the picture up close and to the right, that really ought not to be there. What I'm trying to say is that you've taken on a very difficult subject (a live butterfly) in an already demanding arena (macro photography) and got pretty close. What you need is more time in the field (backyard ?) and more film. On a personal note, I purchased a nice macro lens earlier this year, and have been more frustrated than not in my adventures around the yard. Good macro photography is technically demanding. I posted one nice flower shot, but I've all but given up for now the pursuit of macro shots of flying creatures. More power to you for keeping at it.

    hand (nude)

I like this photo. What draws me to it(other than the beauty of the female form to a healthy male) is the blurred action implied by the hand movement against a pretty sharp rest of the body. Is she shy, and covering up? Or is she moving her hand away to be provocative? I also think the pubic hair and lighting hide detail that otherwise might upset more people. I also like the color. Good job.
