1.
Rodeo Joe I have checked the manual and it seems to suggest like almost every other Nikon DSLR only viewing taken pictures with hdmi or av which is not quite what I want.

I think what I'm asking is about undocumented options, but enthusiasts do find a way around these things as Open Source DigiCamControl shows!

 2.
Adriano Ficarelli thanks for the link - yes according to their web page the D5000 comes out pretty well and will do what I want when connected to a computer.
That leaves leaves the question of whether it can be connected via hdmi to say a LCD monitor and use the IR remote to take the photo when I'm happy with whats on the LCD ie use the LCD as a giant preview screen

 3.
The is goal to set up a live view on my computer of my camera's viewfinder which can then enable close ups and self-portraits while it's sitting on the tripod for taking photos - not video. I mean I would have thought it would be obvious that people would like to use an LCD as a preview viewer (sometimes) as the screen on the camera is so small anyway.
There are two methods that I wonder if they will work with a Nikon D5000 which I'm thinking of buying. I'm not sure if this will work with a D3100 which would be another cheap alternative.
1) It would be great if I could connect via hdmi to my LCD and use the IR remote to take the photo when I'm happy with whats on the LCD.
2) There is this tethering thing. I was wondering if there was any free software that would allow me to see on a computer what one would see through the viewfinder and snap either with the IR remote or clicking on the computer when ones happy with what one sees? I think this guy is doing this though the software is not free (Aperture):
Does anyone have any hands on experience?
