Nice composition, but the line though the water, darker on the bottom, lighter on the top, is strange. Did you use some sort of graduated ND filter? Or is it from processing the image? If it's from processing, I would suggest having the transition a bit smoother. Nice fall image none the less.

  1. I like it. Good use of the reflection to capture a self portait. The only thing I would suggest if you find yourself in a similar situation, use a polarizing filter. It will let you show the reflection better while dimming the bright outdoor light a bit.

  2. Thanks for the feedback. To enlarge it, I created a duplicate layer and masked off the lamp post turning everything else transparent in the top layer. Then I stretched the lamp post in the top layer to fit my idea of what it should be. That left the original lamp post in the bottom layer to get rid of where it was showing behind the fixed one. That was done with some "simple" cloning. I also used the cloning tool to put the cap on the center lamp as well. At the end I merged the 2 layers and ran a blurring tool over the edge of the lamp post to eliminate the hard line that was created by manipulating it separate from the rest of the image.

  3. Yes I know that some sort of processing takes place no matter what. But in my eyes an image that has been manipulated to show something that didn't actually exist is something different than one that hasn't been. Not to say that one is better than the other, just something that the viewer should be made aware of, if it's significant and isn't obvious.

Now the manipulation I did on this image is minor, not really worth mentioning. But my curiosity was more about whether it had aesthetic merit in the eyes of others. Or am I'm being overly picky about a minor image detail?

btw, it's a sunset. San Juan del Sur is on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua.

  4. The next image in the folder is a relatively unmodified version of

this image (just some whole image adjustments to the color and

perspective), but the lamp post in the foreground was bothering me.

Due to the wide angle lens that I used and my proximity to it, it was

really distorted. The top of the lamp post was tiny in relation to the

base. So I decided to do some creative manipulation and selectively

apply some perspective correction to just the lamp post, and in the

process I also "fixed" the lamp missing it's cap. Obviously this isn't

true to reality anymore, but what do you think? Is it an improvement?

  5. Here's a unique little moth, this is uncropped at 1:1 magnification on a crop sensor, that I found the other day. Photographically it's not the best shot as it was dark and I'm lacking my flash, so I used a bright flash light for lighting. But I thought I'd share it none the less as I've never seen a moth like it before. It's wings are "gold-rimmed". The image really doesn't do the metallic gold dots on it's wings justice. They really stood out in the ambient lighting.

  6. Two things I can see that could be done better. First is to compose better when your framing the image. The out of focus plant in the foreground is kind of distracting.

Second is the blue color cast to the image, you White Balance setting was wrong when you took this image. Luckily this is easily fixed in post. Here's an example of what can be done quickly adjusting the levels in an image editor.

  7. Yeah, Red Rock Park is worth a trip for sure. It was my first time there and I was with other people, so I really didn't take my time like I would have If I were alone.  Which is why for example the foreground is out of focus on this image. If I ever get around to going again I wouldn't mind getting another go at it. There a supposedly a lot of picturesque trails around there as well.

  8. The Bellagio fountains are better at night when they turn on the lights. I would suggest trying it at night in continuous shooting mode. As it's constantly changing you want as many images as possible to choose from. When I was there, I took a lot of pictures. But I found it hard to find an appealing point of view. The images were interesting, but none were great. In retrospect, I kind of wished I had just shot video of it, to capture a whole song.

Great image! I'm normally not a fan of B&W images, but it works very well for this image. It almost looks like it could be painting due to it's excellent composition and tonal range.

  9. This image was taken in Northern Costa Rica recently. I find these

hawks relatively often in our orange grove. I checked the book "A

Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica" But none of the images seem to match

    this bird.

Any photography related comments are welcome as well.
