New EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera Fuses Advanced Image Quality and Features into an Ultra-Portable Body
MELVILLE, N.Y., March 21, 2013 – Continuing the quest to deliver superb product innovations, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the world's smallest and lightest DSLR* camera: the EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera. It features a newly developed 18.0-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and high-performance DIGIC 5 Image Processor for exceptional image quality and speed. With its combination of lightweight size, ease of use and outstanding image quality, the EOS Rebel SL1 is perfect for users looking for the ideal camera to bring sightseeing on vacation or to capture the everyday.
"The EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera represents a new era in DSLR versatility: ultra-portable, full-featured DSLR cameras," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "The EOS Rebel SL1 combines the high speed, high image quality and expanded shooting range of a DSLR camera, with the easy and fun usability of a point-and-shoot camera."

Advanced Image Quality in a Compact Body

As the world's smallest and lightest DSLR, the new camera body is 4.6" (w) x 3.57" (h) x 2.74" (d), and weighs only 14.36 oz.** In comparison, the EOS Rebel SL1 is approximately 25 percent smaller and 28 percent lighter than the EOS Rebel T4i digital camera.

The EOS Rebel SL1 features an 18 megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor that performs exceptionally well in both bright and dimly lit shooting environments with an ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to H: 25600) for photos and ISO-6400 (expandable to H: 12800) for video. Canon's DIGIC 5 Image Processor technology allows for exceptional image quality and shooting speed up to four frames per second (fps).
The camera includes a new nine-point center cross-type autofocus (AF) system to help achieve fast, sharp focus. The new AF system also includes a new Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor, which provides a wider focus area when shooting photos or video in Live View mode, and a continuous AF speed that's increased from previous EOS models.
To help capture video with ease, the EOS Rebel SL1 features Canon's Movie Servo AF, which provides continuous AF tracking of moving subjects. When shooting video with one of Canon's new STM lenses, such as the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (available in the standard lens kit), Movie Servo AF takes advantage of the lens' stepping motor for smooth and quiet continuous AF. The camera is capable of Full HD shooting in a number of recording sizes and frame rates, and enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features. The combination of Canon's new Hybrid CMOS AF system II and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is ideal for shooting video helping to ensure only the sounds of the scene are recorded.
Allowing for clear and easy viewing even in bright environments, the Touch Screen three inch Clear View LCD monitor II provides a rich and expansive display as well as providing intuitive touch panel operation. Two finger touch gestures (multi-touch) can be easily used for zooming or changing images, accessing menu and quick control settings, and activating focus point and shutter release while shooting.

    Creativity at your Fingertips

The EOS Rebel SL1 encourages users to explore their creative side with a wide array of features for convenience and simple shooting. The EOS Rebel SL1 is equipped with Scene Intelligent Auto Mode, an advanced function that detects faces, colors, brightness, movement, contrast, distance and other factors and automatically adjusts and selects the exposure method needed. The results are photos with a wide dynamic range, ideal for users without advanced photography knowledge or experience.
Users can also access advanced imaging features like the new Effect Shot mode, which automatically creates two different shots, one with a selected creative filter and one without. In addition, Creative Filters and Background Blur Simulation can now be displayed in real time during Live View shooting. Editing photos is also a snap with the Rebel SL1's in-camera editing and cropping functionality. This feature allows users to view and crop the image using the camera's LCD touch screen and save the edited version as a separate file.
For those who would like to take beautiful photos with ease, the EOS Rebel SL1 offers a variety of scene modes to explore. New special scene modes include Kids, Food and Candlelight, giving users advanced presets to help ensure the best possible photos even under difficult shooting conditions.

    Pricing and Availability

The new EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera is scheduled to be available in April for an estimated retail price of $649.99 for the body alone or $799.99 bundled with the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens.
8.
Sigma Corporation of America announces the release of Sigma Photo Pro 5.5 software
Company introduces SPP 5.5 software with updates and new Monochrome Mode interface
Ronkonkoma, New York —February 21, 2013 — Sigma Corporation of America a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, is pleased to introduce Sigma Photo Pro 5.5 software, which includes upgrades and updates for both Mac and Windows platforms, as well as a new Monochrome Mode processing interface. This updated software is now available for download for both Mac and Windows operating systems.
The new Monochrome Mode will feature several new functions, including a channel-mixing palette, which allows users to control the level of red, green and blue within an image for better tonal separation and contrast. A new grain palette feature will allow users to add or reduce the size and strength of grain within an image, producing a texture and dimension similar to that found in film photography. Paired with the Sigma cameras’ Foveon sensor, Monochrome Mode brings out the true potential of black and white images with great detail, sharpness, contrast and tonality. Foveon X3 image sensor technology allows the camera design to bypass the need for an anti-aliasing filter, which causes image blur, as well as a color filter array which reduces image sharpness.
“Black and white photography is becoming increasingly popular, and the Monochrome Mode, paired with the strength of the Foveon sensor, truly takes black and white photography to the next level,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “With an entirely new processing pipeline for monochrome images, Sigma users will be able to truly take advantage of the Foveon sensor with Monochrome Mode, which we believe will set even higher standards for our Sigma camera line.”
Changes to the updated Sigma Photo Pro 5.5 software include:

Design change for fringing reduction

Updated adjustment settings: Selecting “Auto” chooses the appropriate preset value for the color mode (only compatible with the data of the SD1, SD1 Merrill, DP1 Merrill, DP2 Merrill, DP3 Merrill)

Ensures TIFF files save completely

Added Monochrome Mode interface (only compatible with the RAW data from SD1, SD1 Merrill, DP1 Merrill, DP2 Merrill, DP3 Merrill)

Ensures color consistency on Macs when viewing X3 files in SPP compared to the same file in JPEG opened with the default Mac preview mode

Ensures SPP reflects the data of the latest lenses on Windows

While the overall quarter wasn’t that bad for Nikon, the stock took a beating, falling more than it had since 1985, reports BusinessWeek.
After cutting its profit forecast because of slowing demand in Europe and falling prices, the stock dropped 19 percent to 2,139 yen at the close, the news service reports.
Nikon says its net income in the year ending March will be about probably be 38 billion yen ($407 million), compared with a previous forecast of 60 billion yen. All of us shooters are constantly clamoring for better low-light sensitivity — and Panasonic says its latest development may provide just that. The company developed a new type of imaging sensor that gathers more photons by foregoing conventional Bayer pattern filters that can block more than 50 percent of the light — and so “has doubled the sensitivity of color image sensors.”
The new technique analyzes and separates light wave frequencies faster than previous methods, Panasonic says. “This development makes color filters unnecessary by using the micro color splitters that control the diffraction of light at a microscopic level. Panasonic has achieved approximately double the color sensitivity in comparison with conventional sensors that use color filters.”
The micro color splitters can be fabricated using inorganic materials and existing semiconductor fabrication processes, the company adds.
Panasonic says it already has more than three dozen patents on the system.
Some details from the company:
A unique method of analysis and design based on wave optics that permits fast and precise computation of wave-optics phenomena.
Device optimization technologies for creating micro color splitters that control the phase of the light passing through a transparent and highly-refractive plate-like structure to separate colors at a microscopic scale using diffraction.
Layout technologies and unique algorithms that allow highly sensitive and precise color reproduction by combining the light that falls on detectors separated by the micro color splitters and processing the detected signals.
The development is described in the February issue of Nature Photonics.
Its durable assembly and robust feature-set makes the WG-10 the ideal companion camera for life’s explorers; striking the perfect balance between a point and shoot and PENTAX’s category defining adventure-ready features.
Waterproof to depths of 33 feet, the WG-10 can withstand the rough-and-tumble lifestyle of an active shooter. The WG-10 bridges the gap between the common point and shoot and life’s more challenging photo opportunities that might require waterproofing or the ability to function in a very cold environment; like a trip to the waterpark or an impromptu snowball fight. The WG-10 offers a 14 megapixel backlit CMOS image sensor and a state-of-the-art imaging processing engine assuring rich and detailed imagery.
“The WG-10 is a compelling offering for the active family or dynamic shooter,” said John Carlson, Sr. Marketing Manager, PENTAX. “With the WG-10 you no longer need to sit on the edge of the pool at the waterpark or flinch when your six-year-old grabs the camera to take a picture. It is durable enough to withstand the elements, yet still capture vibrant images worthy of framing or sharing.”
Within its compact body, the WG-10 also features a 5X optical zoom lens with coverage from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent to approx. 28mm wide angle to approx. 140mm medium telephoto in the 35mm format). This versatile zoom lens comes in handy for a wide variety of scenes and subjects, from wide-angle snapshots, to telephoto images. Additionally, the WG-10 features PENTAX’s category defining LED Macro lights coupled and Digital Microscope mode enabling focusing as close as one centimeter from the subject producing shadow-free, evenly-lit images.

Pricing and Availability
Its newly designed, large-aperture, 4x optical zoom lens (with the maximum aperture of F2.0 at wide-angle end), high-sensitivity, back-illuminated 16 megapixel CMOS image sensor, and sensor-shift Shake Reduction system ensure sharp, high-quality, low-noise images.

It's been a roller-coaster year for the Eastman Kodak Company. As one of the most recongnizable brands in the world, last year's news of its bankruptcy filing and the intended sale of its personal imaging business spurred speculation in the industry — with many wondering what would happen to Kodak's fleet of photo kiosks and the value of its iconic name.
But the ambiguity began to clear in recent months. Kodak announced in December that it sold its patent portfolio for $527 million, and earlier this week a judge approved a financing deal worth $843.7 million to pay off its existing bankruptcy loan — both key steps toward bringing the photography pioneer out of its financial woes.
At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Larry Trevarthen, Kodak's VP of marketing and retail system solutions, spoke with Gary Pageau, principal at InfoCircle and blogger for Kiosk Marketplace. Read the interview below for an in-depth discussion about Kodak's current state of business and its plans for the future:
Q: Where is the sale going?
A: Kodak corporate is getting ready to emerge from bankruptcy. We're well on track through the patent sale and the kiosk. With the sale of patents a few weeks ago, and the sale of these businesses, it sets Kodak up for emergence from bankruptcy.
For the photography business, we've been meeting with potential buyers, and there's been a handful who have come forward that are very interested in the business. Through this month, we're going to get ready to go through a process called a stalking horse. One of the buyers is put forth as a base bid, and we announce that. That will be in February. In March, there will be an auction, where any other bidders who want to compete will have an opportunity to bid. And that will be completed sometime in the March timeframe. By June of 2013, the personalized imaging component of Kodak would be separate from Kodak as an ongoing organization with new owners.
Q: Does this include using the Kodak name?
A: We've been meeting with a lot of resellers, and we've said it doesn't make sense without the Kodak name. The Kodak brand is a separate asset available to the purchasers of the personalized imaging component — either to buy or to license. Everybody in the management organization, or even the buyers, can't see that [Kodak] won't go with it, because that's what you're buying, the Kodak photography business.
Q: How many kiosk units?
A: We're quoting 106,000 units installed.
17.
Polaroid Fotobar stores will be the first of their kind retail destinations designed to capitalize on the meteoric rise in people taking pictures. These cool, hip, experiential stores will make the process of turning peoples’ best pictures into cherished pieces of art both rewarding and fun.

“There are currently around 1.5 billion pictures taken every single day, and that number continues to grow in tandem with the popularity and quality of camera phones,” said Warren Struhl, founder and CEO of Fotobar, LLC. “Unfortunately, even the very best of those pictures rarely ever escape the camera phone with which they were taken to be put on display around our homes and offices. Why? Because turning those pictures into something tangible, creative and permanent is neither easy nor fun. Polaroid Fotobar stores are going to change all of that.”

The company plans to open at least ten Polaroid Fotobar locations in 2013, the first of which will be a 2,000 SF store in Delray Beach, Florida. That store, which is slated to open in February of 2013 and will serve as a model for all Polaroid Fotobar locations, has been in design and development for the past 12 months. Every Polaroid Fotobar store will be explicitly designed around the consumer experience, with the goal of helping people release their “trapped” photos and display their cherished memories in the form of premium quality art. Future store locations in 2013 include New York, Las Vegas and Boston among others.

“Polaroid has always been about much more than just taking pictures,” said Polaroid President and CEO Scott W. Hardy. “Polaroid is about sharing life’s most precious and memorable moments. We have been, and continue to be, about selfexpression, creativity and fun. Polaroid Fotobar retail stores represent a perfect modern expression of the values for which we have stood for 75 years. We are very excited about the opening of these stores, and the opportunities they will create for millions of consumers to have classic Polaroid experiences.”

A patent-pending proprietary technology will allow in-store customers to select their favorite pictures on their camera phones and wirelessly transmit them to one of the store’s bar-top workstations for quick and hassle-free ordering within seconds. This platform also allows customers to locate their favorite photos and instantly upload them from popular social platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Picasa and several others. Uploaded photos can be enhanced on the bar-top workstations using photo-effect technologies such as contrast, red-eye correction, brightness and filters showing users the outcome as they work.

Once the images are uploaded, customers will be able to choose from a wide variety of materials, substrates and framing options for their individual works of art – all of which are handcrafted and shipped worldwide to the consumer in just a few days. Images can be framed, matted, and/or printed directly onto a variety of unique substrates including canvas, metal, acrylic, wood and bamboo. The ability to see, touch and feel examples of artworks produced using all of these unique materials is a critical aspect of the customer experience. As such, each Polaroid Fotobar store will be a gallery of its own, with creative, museum-quality pieces on display all around.

The stores will also be staffed by experienced “Phototenders”, each of whom will be a passionate photo enthusiast trained to help guide customers through the process from start to finish. The Delray Beach location will also feature a “The Studio” multi-purpose room that will host photo classes, private parties and include a studio location for portrait photos. Polaroid Fotobar store creators envision the stores becoming a recreational and entertainment destination in addition to a place to shop.

All products created by consumers at Polaroid Fotobar retail stores (with the exception of certain poster products made on-site) are handcrafted and shipped from the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility within 72 hours. Customers may then return to the stores to make additional products for their personal use or as gifts, or use the same service online at www.polaroidfotobar.com.

The Polaroid Brand
Across several generations, people regard Polaroid as one of the most trusted, well-respected and recognizable brands when it comes to technology. The history of Polaroid began 75 years ago, with its roots stemming back to Polaroid instant film, cameras and camera accessories – thus was the introduction of the famous Polaroid Classic Border Logo which is still recognized today as a true landmark of photography.

In recent years, Polaroid has expanded its range of products in consumer electronics and photography, such as instant and digital cameras, high-definition camcorders, mobile printers, tablets, flat-screen TVs and more. People can expect to see new Polaroid products that will deliver the fun, instant gratification and value that the brand has long stood. “Bringing Zenfolio into the Art.com family was very natural because of the synergy between the two companies in the wall décor space,” the company says. “Zenfolio provides a solution for photographers looking to sell their work online, and will allow us to capture an even larger portion of our customers’ ‘wall share.’”
Founded in 2006, Zenfolio’s subscription-based service provides “online photography presentation and sales solutions for professional photographers and enthusiasts.”
Zenfolio’s founder adds, “We are passionate about photography and believe that beautiful photographs should have an equally impressive viewing experience.”
Art.com says it has more than 12 million customers in 120 countries worldwide, and is the world’s largest online specialty retailer of high-quality wall art. The company was founded in 1998, and is headquartered in Emeryville, CA.
Art.com and Zenfolio will continue to operate as stand-alone sites.

CES 2013 Sigma's latest APS-C format compact camera is unveiled

The DP3 Merrill has a 50mm f/2.8 optic, whereas the DP1 Merrill has a 19mm lens and the DP2 Merrill a 30mm lens.
Because the DP3 Merrill has an APS-C sized (23.4x15.7mm) sensor this 50mm lens produces images comparable with a 75mm on a full-frame camera.
As with Sigma's other 46MP compact cameras, the DP3 Merrill's sensor is a Foveon X3 Merrill device that makes use of the fact that light of different colours penetrates silicon to different depths. As a result, rather than having a Bayer pattern of coloured filters over its surface the Foveon X3 direct image sensor captures light via 15.26 receptors at 3 different depths.
Sigma claims that this, plus the lack of an anti-aliasing filter and the Dual TRUE II image processing engine enables the DP3 Merrill to produce images with detail on a par with those from 46MP cameras and excellent tonal gradations.
Image quality is further enhanced by the fact that the 50mm lens is specifically made to work with the camera's sensor and has a telecentric design so that light waves are close to perpendicular when they hit the sensor. The lens also makes use of Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass, aspherical elements and has Super Multi-Layer Coatings to reduce flare and ghosting.
Also, the Handheld Night snap mode helps the photographer capture blur-free night-time images by taking multiple images at one time, then synthesizing them into a single composite picture, Pentax adds.
One billion cameras were shipped in 2012, ABI Research projects — that is, in smartphones and tablets.
Almost every smartphone shipped today has an embedded rear camera and one in three smartphones have a front-facing camera, the research firm says. The number of media tablets with two cameras is even greater. “Purchasers expect to be able to take photos with their devices, and the popularity of video calling is driving the integration of front-facing cameras.”
Furthermore, ABI adds, 2.7 billion cameras in mobile devices are predicted to ship in 2018. Smartphones account for the majority of camera shipments, at 80% of the volume. More smartphones are anticipated to include front-facing cameras as video calling becomes more commonplace and the implementation of LTE network infrastructure in countries will further strengthen the demand of smartphones with these front-facing cameras.
The majority of smartphone releases this year have kept camera resolution around 8 megapixels, ABI notes. Mobile OEMs have looked into new features such as autofocus, rapid capture mode, best picture, and better image captures for low light environments. “Advancements in imaging technology are opening new doors for smartphones and media tablets,” the analysts add. “Mobile device cameras are becoming more than just a digital camera for taking snapshots of your kids and pet. New services like augmented reality and gesture recognition are now easily conceivable in mobile devices.”
Photos: Samsung

Mirrorless (SLR-like) cameras are the one bright spot in the contracting digital-camera market, and today Samsung has unveiled the 20-megapixel NX300: It has built-in Wi-Fi and (with a special lens, sold separately) can shoot 3D still photos and video.
Samsung has been taking pains to make wireless painless and simple. The NX300 can back up, transfer, and share photos wirelessly. And when you download Samsung's Smart Camera app onto an Android device, you can transfer photos and video wirelessly between the device and your NX300. The app also lets you use your phone or tablet as a remote viewfinder—and control select functions on the NX300 remotely. (The iOS version of the app will be out in about a month, Samsung said.)
The camera also includes these other step-up features:

A 3.3-inch AMOLED touch screen that can swivel and has tap-to-focus and tap-to-shoot features.

A variety of nicely designed dials, buttons, and controls, for those who don't like using menu systems.

The ability to shoot 3D still photos and video (using a special Samsung 3D lens).

The ability to charge the camera via its micro USB port.

The AF system includes both phase and contrast detection, allowing for accurate and fast auto-focusing.

The ability to shoot 8.6 frames per second in Burst mode.

Smart tech features such as Creative mode, which selects the appropriate scene mode for you.

The NX300 does lack a few features: For one, there's no built-in viewfinder. (You can't buy a viewfinder accessory, either). It also has no on-board flash, though Samsung includes a small Speedlight add-on flash with the NX300 that you can attach to its hot-shoe.

Samsung has also introduced a unique prime (non-zoom) 45mm f/1.8 lens that lets you shoot both 2D and 3D still photos and video. A switch on the lens lets you choose between shooting 2D and 3D: When you set the lens to 3D mode, two tiny LCDs within the lens drop down and flicker on and off at a rate of 60 frames per second. This lets you capture true 3D video at 30 frames per second. The lens is 3D-compatible only with the NX300, but it will work in 2D mode with all NX-series cameras.
You’re right to suppose the likely suspect continues to be smartphones: ABI Research says the ubiquitous devices “continue to steal market share” from both cameras and handheld game players.
In the digital camera market, shipments are expected to decline more than 11 percent year-over-year worldwide, and nearly 20 percent in North America, the firm reports.
Picture quality and lens attributes might still be the best way to differentiate dedicated point-and-shoot cameras, ABI adds. “While the auditory and visual quality of content in many ways is less important today than in the past, some consumers still look for these features. A subset of customers still look to higher end single-purpose cameras for higher image quality …over smartphone feature sets.”

  25.
When you want to tell someone your expensive new glass is really good — how can you express that? What numbers quantify or clarify speed, sharpness and fidelity?
Now DxO Labs says its “Perceptual Megapixel” is a “a measurement correlated to human vision,” and provides photographers with a means of instantly understanding the performance of a lens by quantifying its impact on the perceived resolution of the camera with which it is coupled. Perceptual Mpix is also based on the scientific findings of the French space agency CNES “pertaining to the optimization of digital acquisition, notably in the field of satellite imagery.”
“This new unit of measure weights MTF measurements [Modulation Transfer Function] with the sensitivity to detail of the human visual system,” the company says, “thus providing a score for the sharpness perceived by our eyes. We think this new measurement will be more understandable and practical for photographers who use our website.”
The Perceptual Megapixel measurement allows for making numerous comparisons among cameras, DxO adds, “and for the first time quantifies the impact of lens sharpness on camera resolution.”
How much impact? An average of 45 percent of all resolution is lost, DxO claims. “The perceived resolution for a camera can be significantly different from the native resolution depending on the lenses with which it is coupled.”
For example, DxO notes, when coupled with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera with a 21MP sensor, a Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM lens has a Perceptual Mpix score of 17.2, whereas a lens such as the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 ZE has a Perceptual Mpix score of 15.2.
The example is based on data from DxOMark’s database of test results for more than 2,700 camera and lens combinations.
This metric can also tell you whether it’s better to buy a new camera, or a new lens, DxO adds.
