1.
Sanjay,
Yes, a small tripod can be very helpful in this situation. However your 055 with the column parallel should go almost to ground level. I had this tripod in the past and was able to spread out the legs to ground level which left the parallel column only about a foot or less off the ground. I have moved to using Really Right Stuff tripods and that have a good, but pricey, ground tripod. http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/TP-243-Ground-Level-Tripod

When doing macro I use a gear head, https://www.manfrotto.com/products/supports/tripod-heads/410-junior-geared-head, sometimes in combo with a focusing rail which works really well for making precise movements of the camera. Although there is no reason a ball head cannot be used, I did it that way before getting the geared head.

Even with ground tripods, geared head, focusing rail doing macro can always be a challenge getting the camera into a good position and achieving critical focus.

Hope some of this suggestions help, good luck.

Roy

 2.
Really Right Stuff makes tripod clamps and head plates for exactly this purpose, although parts from others would work just as well. I have two different ball heads, macro gear head, and a gimbal head that are used between two different tripods. I have clamps on both tripods and plates on all the heads makes switching quick and painless.
