1.
Thanks for your responces guys, I appres

John Kelly: I agree with you in that I would venture a lot of Magnum photographers don' t see themselves as artists, however it is undeniable that their work has been embraced by the art world (analyzed for it's artistic qualitites, exhibited in museums, appearing in art books) I agree that Magnum's work strays from the norms of photojournalism, this is why I am interested in it, in general it rarely adheres to those quintessential objectives of photojournalism this is why I am drawing links between the work of Magnum and art photography although I'm not saying it strictly adheres to all objectives of the fine art tradition.

HCB is reluctant to put such tags on his work (charlie rose interviewed him personally as well, might be worth a look if you're interested http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/3615 ), perhaps in part due to humility and shyness. However I think a grounded argument can be made that his work contains formal qualitites which can be aligned with the fine art tradition.

I agree with your estimation that Capa was more devoted to the documentary cause and perhaps not as concerned with aesthetics, my thesis will be looking at how magnum's aesthetic is evolving, so although there will be an emphasis on the founding members when I speak of evolution in the direction of fine art I will be focusing on younger generation of members, namely Lise Sarfati, Alex Webb, Trent Parke, Christopher Anderson. Also thanks for those links, much appreciated.

Ellis: Thanks for your input, I've been in contact with people at Magnum NY, London and Paris, but naturally enough they are quite busy so I haven't had much luck. Thanks for the other link though- I'll see if contacting them throws anything up.

Jon Butterwick: Are you at liberty to say who you are referring to?

John MacPherson: Thanks for that link, it looks to be interseting!

  2.
Hi everyone, I'm researching for my thesis at the moment which is looking Magnum's aesthetic. Just wondering if you guys have any opinions on the following; do you think that photojournalism in general is entering into the art word and if so why. If anyone is a Magnum fan, would any photographer's work jump out as embodying that of an art aesthetic which may be contrary to the norms of photojournalism? Do people see links with fine art photography and Magnum's aesthetic? Any opinions on Martin Parr (do people see his work as art?)
Lots of food for thought, Would love to get your opinions!
Faye.
