1.
400 was all the store had. I'm pleasantly surprised by the color too. It wasn't "needed", but it was nice to be able to go to 1/1000 for the action shots while using a small aperture for DOF. Also the last two shots were taken about dinner time. Lens was the collapsible 50mm f/2 Summicron.

 2.
Grabbed the ol' IIIf on the way to my parents' house for the 4th of July, and then had to get whatever film at the drugstore - they had Kodak 400. Didn't have time to go out of my way to get my usual Ektar 100, but the speed was welcome. I still love film!
3.
to be fair, 16.8mp. ;) I agree Mauro's are better. Sadly I don't have $6k for a Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED.

But Mauro, what camera and lens are we looking at there? Also I'm not sure if it's fair to compare Velvia 50 against Ektar 100.

At any rate, suffice to say that NCPS has bested my local lab by a significant margin, so until I find $6k for my own scanner I will be using NCPS.

 4.
North Coast Photographic Services - Ken Rockwell raves about them so I decided to give them a try.
Velvia 50, Leica IIIf, Elmar 50/3.5. This scan approaches my 5DII for quality - something I've not seen before from various attempts at film. I tried to focus on my daughter's face, and it's acceptably in focus, but check out the towel fabric and my wife's hand:

http://jmphotocraft.smugmug.com/Family/Fourth-of-July-2011

(haven't uploaded the rest of the roll yet) Roll your mouse over the large image and a menu will slide in from the right. Click the folder icon to save the original (19mb) to your computer. Then view it in whatever program you usually use.

I'm impressed.

 5.
Thank you all! Gus, yes, this is my grandfather's camera that you faithfully and expertly restored. Thank you again! Although I was not using the Elmar lens you worked on. I find the Summicron's cooler colors to be a better match for Ektar, while the warmer Elmar is better for Velvia.

Alex, you can pick up a III for a relative song on ebay, just be prepared to spend another $200-300 on restoration.

Paul, these were taken on Schoodic Lake, Maine.

Mukul, I didn't expect the sunrise image to do much for anybody who's summer cottage deck I did not take it from. I just included it as kind of the finale of the story being told here.

Ektar 100. Collapsible Summicron 50/2 except #5 which was with the Summaron 28/5.6. Thanks for looking!
Jack

 7.
Why bother? The collapsible Summicron 50/2 and Elmar 50/3.5 are wonderful lenses. The 'cron is sharper across the frame, but can be seen a little bit in the viewfinder. The Elmar does not intrude upon the viewfinder, is a little warmer than the 'cron, and makes for a completely pocketable camera. Both can be had for $500 or less on the bay.
Here's a little Summicron vs. Elmar vs 5DII test I did:
http://www.jmphotocraft.com/leica/leica.htm

 8.
In February I inherited my late grandfather's 1951 Leica IIIf with Elmar 5cm f/3.5 lens. The shutter material had failed, the slow speeds didn't work at all, and the shutter dragged in some of the normal speeds. The rangefinder focusing image was very dim and barely usable. After reading Ken Rockwell's excellent article on the IIIf, I sent my camera off to The Great Gus Lazzari at TLC Camera Repair. I was quoted a reasonable price and 9 weeks turnaround. This turned into about 16 weeks, but it was worth the wait. The camera functions as well as it must have in 1951. The rangefinder is as-new - bright, accurate, and easy to use, and all the knobs and levers operate smoothly. The shutter is accurate and snappy. The camera is a joy to use and produces fantastic results. I'm sure my grandfather is happy that his prized camera has new life and is being enjoyed as it should.

Thank you Gus!!

For some sample images from my test roll of Ektar 100, you can check out this little comparison I did between my Canon 5DII and the IIIf - with the Elmar and a Summicron 50/2 I picked up off ebay:

 9.
I thought your comments were fair, Scott. Don't look at the pictures of the players and fans on the newspaper, they contain a lot of noise themselves, and also the plaque has a matte surface. I draw my conclusions from the text, which I think tells the real story.

As for the workflow, did I do it right? Crop the 5DII image to APS-C dimensions (8.2mp), then upsize that to 18mp, then take an 800x1200 crop from that? Frankly I think such a comparison is nonsensical, because I would never do that in real life. Comparing upscaled interpolated pixels to native pixels doesn't seem fair or relevant to me.

Maybe I should redo this test with a nice crisp book instead of a plaque printed from a newspaper, and maybe I should do it in better light? I used this plaque and not an actual newspaper because there was a slight breeze.

Some people have been asking to see the performance of the cameras at the same focal length and subject distance, with the 5DII image cropped and resized to "match" the 7D image. I think I've done it right, please correct me if not.

I've added crops from both cameras at 135mm f/3.5, at the same subject distance. The 5DII image has been cropped to APS-C dimensions (3510x2340) in DPP, transferred to Photoshop CS3 as a 16 bit TIFF, upsized using Bicubic Smoother to 7D size (5184x3456), then cropped to 800x1200 and saved at JPEG 12
Scroll down to the bold word "Upscaling":
