<p>I bought a refurbished one at Adorama for $250; except for the sticker on the cap, you'd think it was new. I used it on my 200 f2.8 and was surprised and how sharp the photo turned out. I now have a 280 f4.0 on FF or 448 f4.0 on my 1.6x body.</p>

<p>Another vote for the 24-105 f4 L as an all around lens. Also consider the 70-200 f4 L, great for hand holding versus the f2.8 and about $1000 cheaper. </p>
