I don't have much in the way of a critique, I like this just the way it is. A special detail is the cigarette in his mouth.

I also have a collection of street musician photos. I love taking photos of them in Austin.

    Wonderful photo.

The rule of thirds works well, putting her off to the side so we get better perspective of the room. I like the contradiction of old and new.....the room looks quite old with the wallpaper and rug but the chandelier has one of those new twisty (don't know the name of it off hand) bulbs that doesn't quite fit with the rest of the room.

The photo evokes emotion for me....she looks as alone and empty as the walls behind her.

Agree on the choice of frame..I would have not used one but just my two cents.

I read alot about how portrait photos (good ones anyway) should convey something about the subject, we should get a sense of the person being photographed. I'm not sure if that's what necessarily makes a good portrait but with this shot you have captured something certainly.

The gaze in his eyes looks as though he's thinking deeply of something..perhaps in his past? A lost love or a regret? We may not ever know but the way you have captured him it makes me think there's a story in there somewhere.

Black and white works very well; simple no extras just like this man appears to be.

I can't add anymore than what has already been said...so I'll just say that I think this is a wonderful photo and your timing was spot on.
  1. Usually I find myself clicking through the photos on the critique forum and not stopping very often to comment. This one caught me.

The processing choice for this subject is spot on. The light blurring of the edges, the grain and depth of field all combine to create a very somber mood. Its as if these unfortunate souls have been left here to be anonymous in their graves witnesses to a time that is long gone.

    Enjoyed this very much.

I have been experimenting with a couple of ideas lately, one in abstract and the other in minimalism and detail so I appreciate the detail in this and your ability to see something others may overlook. What wonders we can find when we look AT things and see them differently. Now I have a new idea!

I do understand how hard these shots can be. We had alot of fog and I just never could get it right.

This is really very nice and the first thing I noticed is how dimensions can trick our eyes or the camera eye sometimes. The bird on the right looks to be a giant compared the child just next to it and almost as big as the others. Quirky and cool.

I like this quite a bit, the thumbnail drew me in.

Even though I know this is the sun coming through the tress (unassuming in the woods) it has real sense of abstraction to it. The rays of light make distinct lines drawing in the eye upwards to see where they go/where they came from.

The color is a little jolting yet lovely at the same time with a softness to it.

    Wonderful photo.

The black and white treatment gives this pop...I also really like how you captured the man on the left, just peeking out seemingly hesitantly almost like he didn't want to be seen.

    Very very nice.

I am not that well versed in the technical aspects of photography as I should be, but I am inclined towards photos that make me think.

The composition here is interesting as it sandwiches the the past with the present by putting the power plant between the castle and the cemetery which I like like very much. Whether it was your intention or not it works very well.

I would suggest perhaps more contrast and detail, and the trees on the right are more distracting than adding anything. Overall, I think this is a good photo and I welcome you to Photo.net. Lots of good advice here...the more you comment, usually the more you receive.

Good luck with your photography, you're off to a good start.

Clear crisp and well processed. The colors and texture bring this to life and I agree, he probably has a lot of stories. Very nice photo.

The perspective leads the eye right into the alley and beyond to see what else may be there. And there is a lot to see...the cross at the end in the archway is a great capture, I like the processing and the lone bicycle hints that someone lives here..... well seen and captured.

Appreciating the irony.....the man behind the rope is on his cell phone. Even there. The cropping is a little off but....I know I certainly wouldn't have a better picture. This is a very good documentary photo.

The perspective is wonderful, it really gives the feeling of being on the precipice and the black white tone gives a sort of ominous touch. And the lack of people around adds to the spooky flavor.

I had an aunt who got the heel of her shoe caught in one of these...

Cool take on an everyday thing we don't think too much about.

  2. This seems to me have a swirling motion to it....a movement. I suppose we all are moving in some direction all the time. Sometimes even we seem to be going in different directions at the same time!
  3. Just what I hope to accomplish with my own portraits some day. Fantastic exposure, caught the catchlights in his eyes just right. Good capture to get such wonderful detail in his face and his expression. Very well done and processed.
