Thanks Yakim & Puppy.
In the future I will try to remember to remove the batteries from my gear if I am not going to be using it for a while.
The shoot was pushed back one week until tonight. During the extra time I had a close look inside the battery compartment and it was clean... Although I did have a new Dixon HB pencil, with its fresh eraser, on standby if the new batteries did not inspire the 430 EX to perform properly.
As I rarely use flash I skipped the $$ lithiums and picked up some Duracell Ultra Digital batteries: they made the 430 EX behave - No spanking needed!

I have not used my 430 EX in a very long time and I did not remove the batteries
from it before storing ('abandoned' in the bag actually).
Tonight I have to use the 430 EX so I pulled it out of the bag to check the
batteries and refamiliarize myself with its operation.
With the Speedlite off of the body: I turned the power on the 430 EX started
trying to zoom in-&-out rapidly and the LCD was flashing on-&-off... this went
on for several seconds before stopping.
Any ideas on why this happened?

<i>"The image from the Live View mode is displayed as a smooth, 30fps video feed..."</i> <p>
When I bought a 30D I also bought an S3 IS for my SO (originally, she was going to get a 350D/XT and she would 'share' it with me) - But then she decided she really wanted to have video + stills . <p>
If Canon can put 30fps to the LCD, it should be trivial for them to add video recording. <p>
A DSLR with video recording would allow me to splurge for a second DSLR - 'Oh look Honey, a new toy for you!' <b>;)</b>

Umm... Neither?
My first thought was to a 1D III, especially for the wedding & dusty bits. Then I read this post - http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00O496
Please keep in mind i'm 'bench racing' here and have not shot with any of the above gear.

"<i>I would love to get into wedding photography</i>"<br>
Weddings are (supposed to be) once in a lifetime events.<br>
Two bodies are a MUST for shooting weddings.<p>
A quality tripod for landscapes would be helpful.<p>
Accessories can add up to a significant amount.<br>
Don't get hung up on spending all your $$ at once.<p>
Used gear can offer very good value.

Canon produces 30 millionth EOS
TOKYO, December 20, 2007 - Canon Inc. today announced the achievement of a new
camera-manufacturing milestone as combined production of the company's
EOS-series film and digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras passed the
30-million mark. Additionally, production of EOS Digital-series SLR cameras has
passed the 10-million unit threshold.
The achievement coincides with Canon's 70th anniversary and the 20th anniversary
of the launch of its EOS line of SLR cameras.

A little history:
Canon produces 30-millionth EF lens
TOKYO, January 19, 2006 - Canon Inc. today announced the achievement of a new
lens-production milestone as production of the company's EF lenses passed the
30-million mark.
Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) SLR
cameras began in 1987 at the company's Utsunomiya Plant. Canon produced its
10-millionth EF lens in August 1995, its 20-millionth in February 2001 and, a
mere five years later, has now reached the 30-million plateau. This achievement
reflects users' high level of satisfaction with the performance and quality
realized by EF lenses, as well as the service offered through Canon's marketing
operations.
Canon's proprietary EF (electro-focus) lens, which combines a large-diameter
fully electronic lens mount and an internal autofocus motor, was born in 1987.

"I just want to get the right combo of lenses that will cover sports(indoors, outdoors), portraits and wildlife/landscapes."
It looks like you want a 'do-it-all' kit... nothing wrong with that.
Even with a $3000 budget I'd say go slow until you are sure about what is going to work for you.
"Option 4 17-55 2.8 and teleconverter 1.4 or 2x" -- This looks closest to what I'd advise. Start with the 1.4x and 17-55/IS, plus a 77mm 500D and/or tubes for macro: This will take about half your budget.
Once you figure where you interests/needs lay, you can plow money in that direction.
What kinds of sports are going to shoot ?

There have been a few tests done - here are two.

Skip the DSLR and get a S5 IS.
Why? Video + stills.

"EF1.4X II - With five elements in four groups, the optical system of the EF1.4X II is exactly the same as that of the previous EF1.4X; however, the improved features such as new anti-reflection construction inside the barrel and edge-blackening of the lens elements reduce flare, providing even clearer image quality than the EF1.4X."

two typos: 1) should be 'AT least equal'. 2) should be 'sweet spot'
Perhaps I should wake up before posting ;)
-
1) User reports that the 40D is a least equal to the 5D in regards to IQ. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/canon-40D-handson.shtml
2) The 'sweat spot' factor... you are only using the best part of the lens.

If at some point you decide the D30 is no longer of any use, or you might want to try the repair yourself - this [.PDF] might be useful.

Looking at the parts list shows us that a few pieces have been changed. There is no date on the parts list so there is no way of telling if further changes have been made. [.PDF] http://www.f20c.com/stuff/canon/partslist/EF%2070-200%202.8%20L%20USM.PDF

For those thinking about buying from Canada (or anywhere other than their home country) - BE AWARE of WARRANTY issues !
Is saving some $$ worth the hassle if you need your gear serviced ?
Do your homework before putting down your cash.
To the OP: Yes! It is about time we canucks didn't feel the wrath of the exchange rates. I wonder if the USA 28-135/IS kit will be offered in Canada for the same good price ?

"Canon IS lenses can significantly raise the quality of your images by reducing blur caused by shaky handheld shooting. The in-lens image stabilizers in these lenses offer two clear benefits over in-camera image stabilizers: higher correction efficiency and a more stable viewfinder image." http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos40d/01.html#2

I couldn't find any info on the 55-250/IS on the Canon USA site, but Canon Europe has a page: http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/EF_Lenses/Image_Stabilization_Lenses/EF-S_55-250mm_f_4-5_6_IS/index.asp

Bait and switch in person?
in Canon EOS Mount
Posted
Numbah Wan asked: <i>...has anyone successfully negotiated a price that wouldn't have been obtainable online at a reputable place like B&H?</i><p>
Yes. I made a package deal for a 30D, BG-E2, S3 IS, 2x CF: Lexar Pro 133x 2GB, 2x SD: SanDisk Extreme III 2GB & Remote Switch RS-80N3.<p>
I did the dealing over the phone and then went in person to get the gear. The savings weren't huge, but it was worth doing.
