1.
Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know I've made up my mind :-)
I'm gonna invest in a Nikkor 85mm 1.4 and keep my 50mm 1.4 and 18-70 DX-kitlens.
Eventually I will change to FX, but for now I realize I still have a lot to learn and almost anything I want to learn can be done on my trusty old D70. I'll work around / make do with the small LCD, noisy hi ISO and (reatively) small DR.
If the D70 should brake up before I'm ready to step up to FX (costwise/featurewise), I'll buy a D90. I came to realize that a small, unobtrusive package is actually very important to my shooting style.
So, thanx for all you inpunt and helping me come to this conclusions.
Thread closed :-)

  2.
Hi all,
Thanx for working with me. With your input I feel at this moment a D90 might be a sensible choice, especially regarding price and real-life (thanx Luis, and yeah it's more FX fever than MP-lust) expectations/results. I could use the remaining money to build what I feel will be the prime kit I will end up with eventually: 50mm plus 85mm and/or 35mm-ish. That's the senisble, real-world approach.
Still, there's the go for it approach: I dig William, Carl and Sasi in their opinions about the D700. Like: you only live once, so if you can afford it, why not go for the best you can get get and stick with that for years to come with no fear of limitations... (mind you: I'm no millionaire and I would have save and do it step by step...)
Thinking like that, the D300 (which I originally fell for) might be something of a compromise....not sure if that would work for me as a positive thing (best of both) or negative (trade off to both)...
Btw Shun, your comment is sound and solid. I don't expect to enter the world of lighting equipment (yet) though....no flash and only available light for me, to keep thing simple in terms of setup :-)

  3.
Hey guys, you are faster than I can read :-) (I am at my work and doing this in boss time)
Thanx for all the input!

I can't deny that I am susceptible to gearlust, but am aware of that, hence the mentioning of the D90 as I know that is a fine body by itself for a much lower price.
And indeed: I am nothing printing big. Mostly slideshows in iPhoto on HD tv of printed albums, A4 size and the occasional postcard print
Still there is something about that FX thing, focal lengths, DR, low noise.... I gues I would have less trouble making a decision if ther was something like a D90 (heck, even a simple D70) with a D3/D700 FX sensor...

  4.
Hi Matt, Peter, thanx for the quick reply!
I do realize the FoV the 50mm has on either a Dx or FX sensor.
If I'd stick with DX I'd be looking for an extra lens for slightly wider indoor /street shots en the 50 as a longish normal lens for street/candid work. A D90 feels indeed familiar coming from a D90 and honestly I had no problems with ruggedness/duralbility from my D70. A heavier D300 though has it's own charm; it feels really good in the hand too, and I do like the externalized controls and buttons.
The other route would be using the 50mm on FX as a normal lens for indoor / street and the 85 for candid/portrait work. With the added bonus of hi ISO/bigger DR form the FX sensor. At a hefty price though...:-) I also notice that I am susceptible for 'nostalgia' as opposed to pure ratio: to me using a focal lenght as it really is feels like working with a film SLR, which is how I started when I was a kid....:-)
As for the Sigma; I indeed read a lot of posts of people recommending that lens. Who knows... As for now I really only am contemplating the 85 1.4 as a 'must have' either way, some day. I really don't see myself building a huge collection of primes, DX or FX. I know myself (have the same thing with too many guitars, but that's another topic, hahaha).
I just want to step up to very good quality lens and appropriate body and want to work on my skilss with that simple and (deliberatly) limited setup for, say, the next ten years...

  5. Hi there,

After 5 years I am ready to upgrade from my D70 with Nikon 50mm 1.4 (still have the 18-70 kitlens, but a whole new

world opened after recently buying the supersharp and compact prime!). I want to work on developping my skills on

light, exposure and colors, but also on black/white

    I shoot mostly:

    1) people; candid or portrait (head/shoulder); indoors or outdoors

    2) walkaround; street, travel

    Reasons for upgrade:

    - I want better dynamic range

    - I want less noise / usable hi ISO

    - I want a bigger and better screen

    *) I don't want to use flash

*) I am not open for third party- or zoomlenses; I want to make the most of the 50mm 1.4 and just one (or max. 2)

other Nikon prime lense. Specifically AF-D type. (don't ask me why; I just like the size/feel/looks....)

    Here's my question:

For a medium-wide/normal/short-tele kit I am contemplating the following to go with my 50mm 1.4:

-D300 (or D90?) + 35mm/2.0 AFD (or wider, but not sure of optical quality and 2.8)

    or

    -D700 + 85mm/1.4 AFD

    What do you recommend?

    Thanx for all input!
