Bella and her mask
My daughter found a Mardi Gra mask and was having fun with is so I snapped off a few photos of her wearing it. But then I had a little fun experimenting with textures on this photo.

I haven't taken anything that interesting in the last week or two so I went through some of my old stuff and dug up some of my favorites. This one is over a year old but it is my absolute favorite shot I have ever taken.

I used a Canon 7D with a Canon 17-55mm, F2.8 lens. I had two Canon 430EXII flash units sitting on the speakers (one stage left and the second stage right) that were triggered with a Canon 580EXII mounted on the camera using Canon's remote Infra Red system. The 580EXII was set to "master: disabled" so it merely acted as the master remote but did not contribute to the lighting of the scene. The flash that was stage left had a 1/2 CTO gel over it while the flash on stage right had no gel. I did this to unbalance the color temperature of the flash units from side to side. I shot completely manual (including the flash units) and I had my white balance set manually between 5000k to 5200K. I alternated the output of the flash units (in camera) depending on what angle I was shooting from. Also, both 430EXII flash units had Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce Diffusers on them to spread the light over a larger area.

odd for sure but pretty cool (chalk writing, thin DOF). Why a strobe used?

I often find it odd sometimes how artistic expression is lost on some people... even amongst fellow artists (or in this case photographers). I used a strobe because I thought it would add a nice touch to an other wise drably lit scene. Or should I have stuck my camera on a tripod 4ft off the ground and pointed it at a bunch of trees like a million other people do?

This was shot in my driveway at around dusk. My daughter was drawing with chalk and I thought it would make for some interesting photos if I got a strobe out.

Camera: Canon EOS 7D
Exposure Mode: Manual
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Lens: Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Processing: Some minor color processing in Photoshop.

Strobist info: Shot with a 200ws Calumet Genesis strobe shooting in a 48" octagon softbox (camera left) and triggered with a Calumet radio trigger.

  17.
Ken - With the exception of a little sharpening that I do to most photos there is no post processing done to that photo. It's pretty much straight out of the camera. The reason it's white balance and color seem a little off is because the stage was lit with intense LED lighting and no conventional lighting at all.

As for the who? Justine Blazer... a local country singer in my area. As for the why? Because this thread is for Canon shots and I took it with a Canon... I didn't know I needed a reason to post a shot here other than for it being shot with a Canon.
