I havent had this problem with my N-80, which I've been using for almost two years.

You might try asking if anyone at the Nikonians forum has had similar problems:

Note that there are other brands (Lee, High-Tech) which are well thought of and not as pricey as Singh-Ray.

If you have time to read up a bit before your trip, Tim Fitzharris' book, the Sierra Club Guide to 35mm Landscape Photography, has a helpful discussion of this and numerous other topics.

Or you could wade through the photonet archive on filters where there are some helpful threads.

Sounds like the photographic equivalent of one of those medieval seige towers. Perhaps you could disguise it as a large wooden rabbit (seem to reacall that almost worked for Graham Chapman).
