1.
I Use a 50D with a Canon 17-55mm 2.8. The prints (in my opinion are excellent) so what would I gain by having a full frame camera ?
It's hard to imagine the prints could be much better than what I am getting now so what would be the advantage in going full frame could I expect to get even better prints than I do now and if the answer is yes would it justify the extra amount of money I would have to pay to go full frame ?
I guess this question must have been asked by many people on this forum so I would welcome the views for and against.

Thanks

 2.
Some of my photos looked poor in respect of the sky so I purchased a polarising filter which appears to have sorted the problem out but do I still need to consider a ND filter ? What would be the advantage in purchasing one in addition to the polarising one ?
Could I use them both at the same time (I have a tripod) or is that a no no ?

 3.
I used a 400D for several years & then upgraded to the 50D with a kit lens but it was difficult to tell the difference between photographs taken with these cameras. I then purchased a Canon 17-55mm 2.8 lens and the prints were just amazing !
What I would do is follow the advice given in previous posts, go for the 20D but hire a few lenses and try them out but I recommend you try the 17-55mm 2.8 first and then use that as your target to test the other lenses against.

 4.
If I understand depth of field correctly the closer the lens is to the camera the greater the depth of field. This is the reason why a number of non SLR'S do not go higher than f8 and this leads on to my question,
Instead of viewing direct through the lens using mirrors on an SLR why is it not possible in this day and age to electronically view direct through the lens and have a sliding shutter that activates a fraction of a second before the sensor is exposed ?
This would allow future design of lenses to be closer to the sensor on a redesigned SLR, allowing a greater depth of field and use a full frame sensor rather than cropped.
Please note I know nothing about cameras and this question is in the beginners forum so please bear this in mind when responding.

Thanks

 5.
Are there any charts covering Canon lens that give information about the best f stop that delivers the best image with the fewest aberrations ?
I am specifically interested in this information regarding the following 2 lens,

Canon efs 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM
Canon efs 55-250mm 4-5.6 IS

Thanks

 6.
Is it possible to buy spares for any current Canon eos Camera ?
What I mean by spares is shutter button/mirror mechanism/Sensor etc or are these things only available to Canon dealers ?
On the same subject is it possible to obtain a workshop manual for each camera ? or is this something that does not exist (or at least not available to the general public ?)

 7.
I have been looking at a number of reviews of the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 and a number of people who own this lens mention dust in the lens.
If you have this lens and had this problem is it costly to sort out ? Does it mean a return to canon or would any major photography dealer be able to sort it out.
Thanks

 8.
Thanks for the responses. I should have added that I live in the UK and would rather buy here than have something shipped from outside the uk as I guess the less handling an item like a lens gets the better.
There is also the strong possibility that import duty would be added if it came from the States, Japan, etc

 9.
I Have been looking to purchase a much better lens but the new price is well above what I can afford, so I have been looking on e-bay.
Is it a wise decision to purchase a lens in this way ?
Private sellers usually indicate there is a no returns policy so if the Lens was faulty there would be little comeback.
One solution might be to visit a camera shop to get the opportunity to test the lens and get some sort of warranty but second hand lenses can often be near the price of a new lens.
I would like to hear from anyone who has gone down the route of purchasing a lens on e-bay and any problems they may have had.
Thanks

 10.
Many thanks for your very detailed and honest answers.
I do use a Canon 50D with a couple of Canon ef-s lens 17-55mm 2.8 USM & 55mm -250mm and to be honest am very happy with the prints which are normally no bigger than A4 with a handful at A3 but that would be the maximum size I would ever print at.
Perhaps I was getting carried away at trying to get perfection or in other words trying to continually improve on the final product and under a false impression that the better (or more expensive equipment) would get me those results.
Thanks again

 11.
Can anyone point me in the direction of photos taken on a full frame and cropped frame (canon camera) using similar lens and compared side by side ?
What I am really asking, is there a significant difference between a printed photograph taken on a full frame camera as compared to one taken on one with a 1.6 crop.
I guess most people with full frames will have previously used a cropped frame camera. The price difference will be considerable so from a personal point of view I am trying to check out if it worth it going down that road.

Thanks

Do many people on this forum use a device to calibrate their monitor ?
spyder 3, pantone huey, eye-one display LT are the ones I am looking at.
The reviews seem to vary from those who say it's an essential item to others who think it a waste of money.
Also am I right in thinking that if you set up your monitor with one of these then those settings would be transferred to your printer ?
I would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who uses these what they think and recommendations about the one to go for.
Thanks

 14.
Many thanks for all your answers. Certainly given me something to think about.
I do use a tripod but a very light one (Slik pro) simply because I do a lot of fell walking and lugging a heavy tripod about is out of the question.
Unfortunately due to cost I am unlikely to ever move up to a full frame camera but from what has been said about the cost of the 17-55mm holding it's value so well I guess that if I sold it, I would lose little money and looking at old photo magazines the cost of this particular lens new has gone up !
At one time you could get it for £675 but the cheapest I have found is Amazon at £735 !

 15.
I use a Canon 50D but shortage of funds means the current lens I use is a Canon 18-55mm IS.
Nothing wrong with the lens but I am considering replacing it with the 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM.
I Know all the advantages such a replacement would give me like shooting in low light, fast focus etc but my main question is about the sharpness. If I was to compare a print from each of these lens taken under the same conditions would it be obvious which lens had taken which photograph.
The inexpensive canon 18-55mm gives me fairly sharp pictures at close range but I find it poor for Landscape photography and this is what I would mainly use it for.

 16.
Thanks for the comments.
I am using XP and have a DVD burner. I also have a card reader so transferring the video to the computer is no problem at all.
My software is really photography related ie. photoshop & Lightroom.
There was no burning software with the dvd/cd burner but I have always used CDburnerXP to burn things to CD or DVD with no problems.
The idea would be to burn it to disk and then play it in a stand alone DVD player connected to a television. The DVD player is multi regional and can play DVD +/-
I could experiment but my main reason for posting was to get some idea of what I need to do before wasting to many disks !
Thanks again.

 17.
I have just purchased a Canon Ixus 100 for my wife's birthday and it has a facility to record video.
I no absolutely nothing about video and simply wish to know is it an easy task to transfer video from this camera to a computer and burn it on DVD or do I require additional software, or need to change the file format?

Thanks

 18.
Canon ef-s 17-55mm IS USM
The majority of comments about this lens have been very positive, however a few have mentioned that out of a number tested some could be sharper than others, although they would all have been within a certain specification before being passed ?
Is this something to be bothered about if sharpness was an issue ?

 19.
Many thanks for your responses. I think it likely I will go with the 17-55. Most of the photographs I take are Landscape but there will be a number of occasion such as holidays when the f2.8 & IS will come in handy.
Most of the reviews are very positive about the 17-55 and I was surprised to see matthijs claessens comment that he thought the 17-55 was sharper.
It is unlikely I will ever upgrade to a full frame camera so the ef-s lens is not an issue for me.
There is just one other point about Lenses that I will raise in a separate topic on the forum

 20.
Have recently upgraded from the 400D to the 50D and what a fantastic camera.
I Mainly take landscape photographs and wish to purchase a suitable lens.
My choice is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM OR the EF 17-40mm f4 L USM
The f2.8 + IS are a major appeal to me as I could forget about a tripod but equally you can't improve on L glass
The 17-55mm lens is the more expensive of the 2 (on amazon) but which one would you advise me to go for ?
I would be specially interested in hearing from anyone who has used both of these lenses.

Thanks

 21.
When using my compact camera (Canon G6) there is a delay of a few seconds from when I press the shutter button to when the actual photo is taken, a major problem when trying to shoot moving objects.
Are there any compact cameras on the market that take the photo immediately the shutter button is pressed and if so could anyone recommend such a camera in the Canon range.
Many thanks for your help.

 22.
Thanks for the responses. I take it the 50D does not have an infrared facility ? Bit of a pain really as I do a lot of fell walking so I will be (un)plugging the remote 50 - 100 times per trip. I Guess the socket is fairly sturdy but over a period of a few years it could get worn. true I could leave it connected to the camera for the full trip but the camera bag I use just holds a camera and telescopic lens and fits to a belt along with a shoulder strap as I can't have it swinging about when clambering over rocks.
OK I hear someone say get a proper backpack but I already carry a 35L rucksack which is stuffed full of items with no room left for a camera or other accessories.
Further comments on this post would be welcome

 23.
I Know there are a number of remote control systems for the 50D but whats the simplest cordless system ?
I Had a 400D and the remote control just clipped to the camera strap.
I,m not bothered about it being able to fire from different angles or over any particular distances as I tend to do HDR landscape photography so the main aim is to have something light and portable.
Any advice in this area would be appreciated.
Thanks
