I just completed the Professional Photography Course from the Photography Institute. Took advantage of a half price offer so it cost $599. I took it for three reasons: organized approach, force me to stay on schedule, critical feedback. It delivered on the first two. Very weak on the third. Questions went unanswered. Some comments made it appear the tutor didn't read my submission.
It is heavily oriented toward the person looking to begin a business. I am not and should have read the prospectus more closely. You also have to have Photoshop.
Knowing what I know now, I would not take the course again and can't recommend it. I would follow the free lesson plan and assignments by Jodie Coston at http://www.morguefile.com/docs/Classroom or any similar free course.
I'm also half way through the Lightroom course from Chris Orwig ($99). Highly recommended!
Congratulations to you and your wife!
I'm not much of a photographer but I owned a camera while I was stationed there for three years.
Ditto the drive down to Big Sur and the aquarium. Carmel Mission Basilica at 3080 Rio Road is beautiful and historic. (Sunday mass is great too.) Not sure what your tastes are but the Laguna Seca Raceway offers a lot. Monterey holds a lot of classic auto auctions. Multimillion dollar cars sometimes depending on the event. If you're a golfer, have a drink at the Lodge at Pebble Beach and take shots of the players taking photos as they finish the most expensive round of their life. Nice beach at Stillwater Cove, people, dogs, golf holes, sea lions, cliff.
If I could only take one, it'd be the 24-105mm. The 17-40mm will fit in her purse though.
Enjoy!
