Beautiful image Douglas.  I really like the comp and colors.

I'm also using this lens/camera combination.  I'm finding that the corners of the images are really soft (almost seems out of focus) when I'm shooting waterfall scenes like this.  I'm not sure if it's my technique or the lens.  Have you had any problems like this?  I also use the Nikkor 14-24, but it is razor sharp throughout the frame.  Thanks for your time/thoughts.

    Lupine Sunrise

Day break over a huge field of lupine in the Goat Rocks Wilderness in Washington.

    Nikon D800, Nikkor 14-24mm G at 14mm, no filters
2 exposure hand blend, 1 exposure for the sunstar and sky (1/40 sec at f/22, ISO 100) and 1 exposure for everything else (1/160 sec at f/16, ISO 400). I really like the sunstar created by the 14-24...very crisp and clean.

  1. Peak fall colors and fog at Multnomah Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, November 2012. Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon and drops 620 feet.

Please click on the image to see the larger version which is properly sharpened.

Thanks for taking a look and for any comments you have.

Awesome image Jordan.  This is definitely one of my favorite places in the Gorge.  I really like the contrasts between the cool tones in the water and the fall colors.

Nice image Mario.  I like the comp and the sky. The foreground seems too cool compared to the sky and ocean.  I might try warming up the tones a bit in the foreground to make everything match.

Thanks so much to everyone for all of the comments.

For the sharpening issue, I will have to take a closer look at what's going on.  I uploaded the image at 900px wide, but it seems to be changing the size to make it fit the standard format (and the result is a softer image).  I agree that the smaller version looks soft on the mountain, but when I click on the image and make it larger it looks fine.

For the colors - it's and artistic decision on how I processed the image.  I like big bold scenes and I remember the mountain just glowing a pink hue that morning, so that's how I processed the image.

For the comp - I appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts on the comp.  I purposely arranged this comp to include the foreground flowers.  To me this is a layered comp starting with the sky, mountain, fog, middle ridge and flowers. If I take away any one of these elements, the image doesn't work for me.

Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts!

Summer wildflowers and sunrise alpenglow on Mt Adams from the Goat

    Rocks Wilderness in Washington.

This image was created on a cool and crisp morning during a 4 day

backpacking trip in the Goat Rocks last week.

Thanks for taking a look and for any comments you have. I appreciate

    them all!

  2. Thank you to everyone for all of the comments.  I really appreciate it.

Tony - Here are the technical details for this image:

    Nikon D800, 14-24 Nikkor at 14mm.

6 image blend using the "auto-blend layers" function in CS6 plus some manual hand blending.
    - 5 images for DOF in the foreground flowers. 1/4 sec at f/8, ISO 400. These images were shot ~20 mins after the sun had set. (8:20 PM)
    - 1 image for the stars/mountain/clouds. 30 sec at f/2.8, ISO 3200. This image was captured about 90 mins after the first set of images (10:00 PM)

Christopher and Phil - the lights to the right of Mt Adams are from the Portland/Vancouver area and to the left of the mountain is light from The Dalles.

  3. This is an image from our recent 4 day backpacking trip in the Goat Rocks. This was the only clear night while we were out and I took full advantage of the conditions. To me it seemed like the wildflowers were all looking up and admiring the stars just like I was while creating this image.

Thanks for taking a look and for any comments you have. I appreciate them all!

This one is amazing Zsolt.  The composition is excellent and you did a great job with the b/w processing.  I really like how all of the small branches are very light.  This helps to separate the small branches from the dark trunks and gives the image tons of depth.  Well done.

Nice sunrise light here Barbara.  I like the water in the foreground which serves as a nice leading line in the image.  The distant person helps to give a sense of scale to the image.  Well done.

  4. Balsamroot and sunrise light on a windy morning at Dog Mountain, Columbia River Gorge, Washington.

Nikon D7000, 12-24 Nikkor dx, no filters
5 image hand blend. 4 at f/5.6 for DOF, 1 at f/11 for the sky, ISO 800--> it was very windy.
