You can get a used 5D (instead of a 5D2). It would be in your budget. Its a great value if you get one in excellent condition. Someone also mentioned a faster lens...My recommendation is the 85mm 1.8.

Its a Cold and sunny day in Toronto! Going to head into the city with my Pentex KM mounted with a 50mm lens and 3 rolls of B&W film.

Home - Toronto, Canada
Love
1. Istanbul
2. Romania
3. Greece
Hate not having a camera with me at the most opportune time.
Want
1. Cuba! (I want it bad!...for the vibrant colors, amazing people, cars and old buildings)
2. Mumbai (If you've ever people watched in India..you know why Mumbai's on my list)
3. Peru - Machu Pichu (for the landscape)

Ana, I just checked out the example and it looks great! Do you have access to Lightroom?
I wonder if any one can suggest how to get this effect through Lightroom?

My main working lens are my Nifty 50 and 85mm 1.8 but I also have a 185mm 1.7 Zeiss (DDR) that I like to bring out from time to time...its in perfect working order but manual and massive so not practical to use that frequently. I rent lens when needed for phoot shoots. What i'm looking to invest in is a 24-70 2.8L and 70-200mm 2.8. All in due time...
Happy Shooting!

Hey Lisa, Can you show us the image?...to see how 'bad' it is, or if it takes away from the effectiveness of the photograph...

This is great. thanks!

Also, the skin needs some softening

I too am very happy with my 5D mark I. i bought it used in Sept 09 and the IQ is great. Unless you have use for the video, I would go Mark I instead of Mark II. Splurge on some good quality glass with the money you save buying a Mark I...you won't regret it!
'to say the truth, years ago i had a D70...."
Jack, Do you have Nikon Lens or Canon lens?

Claudette, walk away. If the client doesn't know what goes into this kind of shoot, then its just not worth it.
2 hours for a job this involved is just crazy..lol. impossible. I would say 6 hours so If you break down the cost's your already over the $1000 mark.
For example
Stylist - $500
MUA - $500
1 Assistant @ $15-20 per hour = $100ish (IMO you need 2 assistants, depending on how your setting up lighting)
Model - John A mentioned $150 an hour which is probably right depending where you live. Lets cut that in half to show how much over 1000 we are even if you do this on a shoe string budget. so thats $75 x 6hours = $450
We are already at $1550 and we haven't considered cost for post processsing or cost for your time.
I also think 1 model is really pushing it... you need min 2 models. SO now we're up to $2000.
Not sure if you'll actually spend $500 on a MUA or $500 on a stylist... but the point being $1000 is way to low anyway you cut it.
It is also worth considering the negative affects to your brand of rushing a job like this due to a clients cash constraint. As people have already pointed out, 2 hours just isn't enough time... there is a good chance you do a 'hack job' because you've been given only 2 hours to do a 6 hour job. Word of mouth can work for you ...or ruin you. Just something to be aware of. :-)
On the flip side this sounds like a great opportunity, so I hope you and the client can come to an agreement...just don't undercut yourself @ $1000 and end up eating the costs yourself.
GOOD LUCK!
D

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the feedback!!
Paul, I'm not really sure what my white balance setting was to me honest. What should it be for this sort of situation???
Steve, Thanks for the reminder re: focal length. I should have mentioned that I shot those images for the make up artist that worked on all the models..hence the photo's being tight in...but regardless, I'm going to make sure I have a variety of focal lengths this time around.
I looked at the technical specs in light room and most of my images were shot at 500 ISO... If you guys could shed some light on the best white balance setting that would be great...because I see what Paul means about the yellowish tone.
Also, What would be the best lighting set up for getting clear shots of hair and make up before the fashion show. According to the venue there is 'tons of space backstage' to set something up
FYI - I have 2 soft boxes (400watt) and a reflector. Just not sure how elaborate I should go with the lighting. I like to think simple is better...since there will be a lot of running around, I don't want to spend lots of time setting up etc
I was thinking 1 soft box and a reflector if anything... and what color background for the pre fashion show shots? I have access to some pretty big white sheets... thoughts?
any suggestions??

Hello Everyone,

I'm shooting my second fashion show next weekend...so I've posted 4 shots from the last one I did.
Please have a look and give me some input on how I can improve the look of my photographs. Camera setting advice would be GREAT.... AV vs TV vs Manual, preferred f stop's. Any helpful hints to shoot spectacular stage shots!
The equipment I'm using - 5D with a 70-200 2.8IS no flash for the stage. The backstage area is pretty spacious so I'm planning to use the 80mm 1.8 and in case I'm caught in a tight area my 50mm 1.8. I'll take 2 batteries and 2 cards (8gig and 4gig)
Thanks!
Dipesh

Thanks for the awesome feedback!!You guys have made some valid points. I'm really leaning towards DipeshLakhani.com
Abhijit, would you be so kind as to elaborate on some of the advantages of using my full name. (esp if I decide to go pro) Thanks.

Hello All,

My name is Dipesh Lakhani and I am an amateur photographer from Toronto. Until now I've been using Picassa to share my photographs but want to create my own website. So first things first, I need a name for my site. Ive been mulling over different options and could really use your input. ..
Dipesh.ca (.com is taken)
Dipeshlakhani.com
Dipeshphotography.com
Dipeshlakhaniphotography.com or .ca
D-PO.ca
d-pophotography.com
and if you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them!!

There was another post regarding nicknames by Allen L, and I thank him for bringing up the nickname question because I was facing the same dilemma. Apart of me knows d-po probably isnt the best idea, but I throw it out there for you guys to judge.
I should mention. My main concern is that Lakhani will be to difficult for ppl to remember or spell (If Im verbally giving someone the site). Dipesh people seem to remember because of Depeche mode (it is pronounced exactly the same).

Thanks in advance !!!

Is it worth buying another lens for portrait work?

Hi Paul,
The 50 1.8 will do the job just fine. I've also used 85 1.8 on a crop sensor body for portriat work and it renders some
pretty good IQ. It might be worth considering renting for the project...if your not ready to invest.
Good luck!
