1.
Brad,
Im from brazil and I faced the same issues that you described, except by confiscated declaration and I was able to get it back when I come back.... (from RIO to Sao Paulo)
In US I was locked in a immigration cell (LAX) for 6 hours to explain why I was carrying a tripod (manfrotto carbon fiber) and almost they sent me back...
From Orlando to Miami i had no issues...
Well, I suggest you to check TSA website before flight or carry int your luggage.

 2.
Brad,
Im from rio and I would tell you that the best option is to dont show your gear. But, if you want go to corcovado ou pao de acucar (sugarloaf) just carry one tele and a good wideangle. After terrorist attack in US, the security guys are not allowing tripod there, i faced that 2 weeks ago. You can try to say that you working for a magazine and allow them to inspect your gear...
Iguazu falls are not so "wild" like rio, but they have huges problems involving violence there, mainly because they at the brazil border with paraguay and argentina.
Just use the behaviour that you probably use in big cities in US, like NYC or Miami, LA.
ps: Declare your gear when you arrive to avoid issues with brazil customs...
Skydive and surf are my favorites sports. Well, I suggest you a wide angle to capture the aircraft exit, but if you jump (and i suggest you to do that or hire someone to get photos, its not expensive) or a fish eye in case of freefly and positions like headdown.
If you need some cameras man suggestions let me know where you will jump.
4.
James, Do you shoot in low speed without a tripod ? if no, dont waste your money in a 70-200 2.8 IS.
I did it and I fell bad everytime that i stand my camera with this lens.
I'm Surf Photographer and I use 70-200 with a waterhousing to do sessions inside the water and IS make the lens so heavy.
I'm trying to sell it and buy a 70-200 2.8 USM.
Hope that helps.
5.
Hi Brian,
I'm surf photographer and I'll tell you that no one could be comparated to Mark III, its realy amazing.
10 fps its wonderfull when you shoot sports and will be the diference between a photo published/selled.
I noticed a lot of photographer using 40D (and i use sometimes) but its a turtle and just can be used as a backup.
I suggest you to buy a Mark III and be happy.
ps: Mark III its so f***king sharp dude. you will enjoy.
6.
Hi,
Dont you think that is not a good time to visit south america due to flu ?
I'm from brazil and to be honest the things is getting worst here and in other countries from south america (chile, argentina) due to H1N1A.
Just be aware.
Nice to hear that. I'm going there and then to mentawai islands.
Well, everytime that I visit indonesia, i used to use Canon 2.8 70-200 USM for Lineups and photos inside the water. Tokina 10-17mm for freesurfing inside the water; Canon 600mm for some places (for example sumatra and gland). 70-200 is a flexible lens, and you can try to do some photos in a boat also. 100-400 is a good lens also. I use a Canon Mark III and 40d (as backup).
Dont forget to buy a good waterhousing (spl or aquatek are the best in my opnion) and a flash.
The best way to get/take surfing photos in indonesia is inside water in my opnion, you ill need a good fins as viper or techfins and a water boot to protect your feet allowing you to stay for 2 or more hours in the water.
Be aware: Dont try to sell surfing photos for tourists or anyone there. The local photographers can punch you or call the police and it can cause a lot of trouble for you because probably you ill get a tourist visa.
Good luck there and post some photos here later.
Best Regards,
8.
Hi Folks,
I will travell to indonesia and will stop first in HK and of course that I would like to buy some photo items.
Do you recommend a store or a list of stores there ?
Thanks
9.
Hi Jake,
Since that you're not a resident, you are not supposed to register your device in you entry in brazil.
Of course that is not a good thing to say that you're coming to work because it will require a appropriated VISA, not a TOURIST VISA. But this procedure (regarding the visa) its normal in US, EUROPE, in every place of the world. Usually US Imigration its terrible than brazillian authorities in this subject.
But, if you need a VISA to work in Brazil, the procedure its simple and not expensive. You can contact brazillian consulate or embassy in your country and ask informations.
Brazil is Safe, but as in any big country, we have crime. Hire an insurance for the equipment and enjoy Brazil. Differently of HAWAII we dont have someone stoling your devices/photo_gear on the beach sand or breaking your door house to stole.
Oh: Forget about Africa stuff, brazil its completely different and has his own "features".
Welcome.
10.
Jeff, I would recommend you a 40D. I read a lot of reviews about 50D and to be honest IMHO its not a good moment to move to 50D. I preffer to wait a little bit more until move to 50D.
You can research photo.net regarding 50D and take your own opnion.
For photo sports 40D is a good entry point, if you have some money and can spend (or in a moment waste it, depeding what you will do) I recommend you a MARK II because it performs 8/9 fps.
What you will do ? surf photos ? underwater photos ?
Best Regards,
