I just purchased a reconditioned D90 from Adorama and so far It has worked great. No problems at all. The only thing that kinda made me wonder about QC was the camera strap. I opened it up to put it on the camera and noticed that it had a fairly strong smell of perfume or cologne and on the underside of the strap their was something gross that looked something like dried lasagna.. That almost made me sick. I just stuck it back in the plastic and took the strap off of my D60 and went with that. As for the D90 body its self, I really couldn't tell it from a new one. This is my second Nikon reconditioned product and so far I have been very happy with both.. I don't know if Adorama or Nikon would send me another strap or not. I guess I could just try washing this one. It wont keep me from buying another reconditioned product but it was kind of a sour moment when I found it.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune with your D300 but I guess it could have just as easily happened with a new one as well.. I have had similar and even more costly repairs on new products from a previous hobby of mine. Just my luck that it would break just after the 1 year warranty expired so I feel your pain here. Good luck and hopefully they will fix the problem once and for all..

Does the D60 have user-changeable focusing screens?

Yes. They are changable on the D60. In fact, I seen a lot of aftermarket screens that were available. Some were inexpensive (less then $20) and some were $100 plus.

Great advice. I was researching afterwards and noticed most people used the rocket blower. That will definitely be one item on order very soon.

I guess this is more about learning to take more care when cleaning your gear than anything else. Today I was gently removing dust from the inside of my D60. I use canned air always taking care not to blast the insides like a hurricane. In the process I guess I must have slipped and bumbed the nozzle tube of the air can against the focusing screen as I noticed what I first thought was dirt when I went to look through the viewfinder. On closer inspection I noticed what looked like scratches or where the coating had been scratched off. I guess for me its more of an annoyance than anything else when im looking through the viewfinder and see all those scratches. I started getting that kinda sick feeling just knowing im fixin to be out a buck or two. It's just a good reminder to me to always take extra care when cleaning anything delicate like my camera. I called Nikon parts department and I was surprised they actually sell parts to the public. Furthermore I was shocked that I was able to order a new focus screen for less than $20 shipping included. I thought the price would have been through the roof to get it straight from Nikon but I was quiet surprised. They said they would ship it right out and I should have it in about one week. The waiting begins... Hope they send me the right part.

I like to take as little as possible. I personally dont like carrying a bag full of camera gear when im out and about. I have been using my Nikon 18-200 VR and I have been satisfied with the results. It's a great walk around vacation lense in my opinion and keeps me from having to be swapping lenses all the time. I guess it all depends on exactly what your planning to shoot and what you want to achieve. It's probably not a bad idea to keep a backup lens in any case though.

I dont have that much stuff so I just keep it in my bag ready to grab and go. I dont know how many times I have gone out only for a 30 minute trip to the store and back and not had my camera then see something amazing and not be prepared. It's always ready to go plus keeping it in the bag seems like better protection from dust and dirt than just sitting it on the shelf.

Camera bag?
in Nikon

I just ordered the large Tenba Messenger 2.0 from Adorama. It got really good reviews and I'm hoping that I am going to like it. I also travel and have a need to carry everything in one bag. It is a shoulder bag but you might prefer backpacks. One reason I like the Tenba is because it looks more like a regular messenger bag rather than a camera or computer bag and also it has easy access to the inside. It also comes in a variety of colors and sizes. Just my 0.02 cents worth.
http://www.adorama.com/TBPDLOL.html
