1.
The 5d2 is a major leap above the 40d in about every way possible.

God, the screen alone is worth the upgrade, not to mention FF/ very usable 6400 iso/21 mp/awesome functions/mf adjustments/improved battery life/HD movie/sraw options/etc.........
Go to a camera store and ask to look at a 5d or 5d2 with a 17-40L on it and a 40d with a 17-40L at the same time. One look through the viewfinder should settle you.

Not to mention it makes sense to have a FF and a APC body so you have a choice.

 2.
Congrats! You are going to love it. I love mine more than I can say. I am no longer sure how I dealt with using a Rebel for my work.

Usable 6400 is a game changer. I rarely use flash indoors these days.

I could rave about it for hours.....

Congrats again.

 3.
I had the same thing happen to my 70-200 2.8. Take it to a camera shop unless you feel real good about cutting the ring off yourself. They did it for free. Unfortunatly my front element got a small chip on it (They can be replaced, but it costs about $380.) I ended up blacking out the chip (to keep it from flaring) since it was far enough to the outside that it does not show up, even on my full frame body. It makes me sad since my baby isnt perfect anymore, but it works just fine.

small Front element scratches/chips are not TOO big a deal on telephotos. Its the rear element that is the problem.

 4.
I have been asked by a local upper end steak house to send them a bid to take some photos of their private room and exterior for use on their website. I know that the interior shot will require lighting setup (no rental fees.. as I own my own lights). Anyone have any good suggestions how I should price and licence the use on these photos? I have never tried to license stuff for web use. They have offered to give me a credit on the website next to the photos.

At the moment I feel like saying 650 for shoot and the use of two photos (plus credit for the photos). Sound reasonable?

Thanks

 5.
My 580 exII is acting very strange. It turns on fine, but the pilot light will not come on and it will not flash. I have tried multiple sets of batteries and insuring it is not on master/a custom fucntion enabled.

Does anyone have an idea what it might be (Aka some stupid thing I am missing)? If not I am going to send it to canon I guess..... warranty just ran out.... :(

 6.
Hi everyone. I would like to hear comments/suggestions about my prices/ pricing scheme.

The prices below are for food/interior/portrait (depending on the type of business...its often interiors/food and requires strobe setups) photos that will be used in a magazine that has a (paid) circulation of about 40,000. The magazine caters to upper-middle class clientele. The advertisers are local businesses (Wine bars, restaurants, spas), not large corporations.

I am charging a basic shoot fee for my time (adjustable based on increased shoot time) and then adding on a licensing fee depending on what size the ad they are buying will be. The licensing fee allows them to use as many photos (from their session) as they want (on a single ad). I allow this since the graphic designer at the magazine often makes collages. The license lasts for one year, at which time they can re-purchase. Upgrading to a larger size requires paying the difference.

Minimum Session Fee (3 hours) - $250

1 year Licensing Fee For Use (in a magazine with 40,000 circulation):
1/4 Page or Spot use: $150.00
1/2 Page: $350.00
Full Page: $650.00

Here is an example of the kind of work I am doing.

 7.
Taylor, as someone who started out shooting with a XTi, let me give you a peice of advice..... If you get a zoom get a 17-50 2.8 tamaron and for low light/thin depth of field get the canon 50 1.8 (aka the nifty fifty) It only costs about 75 dollars and is damn sharp.

You will find that 24-28mm on a crop body is not even close to wide enough when you want wide. Even 17 is not really all that wide on a crop body.......

 8.
Made my purchase tonight (along with a new 5d2). Had to go with only 3 lights due to budget constraints (the 10% student discount couldn't be combined with the accessories discount). Thank you guys for all of your input. I took several of you guy's advice. Now all I have to do is get good enough with everything to pay off the student loans I took out to buy it with!

Here is what I got.

2 White Lightning X-Series X1600

1 White Lightning X-Series X3200

1 22-inch Pan Reflector with optional diffusion sock
1 Boom Arm Attachment with 11-pound Counterweight

1 The Vagabond II Portable Power system

1 Travel Case

3 CyberSync Trigger Receiver -
Plus
1 CyberSync Battery Powered Trigger Receiver

1 CyberSync Trigger Transmitter

1 Foldable Giant Softbox

2 Foldable Large Softbox

1 Set of 4 Honeycomb Grids

2 Stand Carrying Bag

3 13-foot Air-Cushioned Stand

1 32-inch Silver/White Umbrella

1 32-inch Shoot-Thru Umbrella

2 48-inch Shoot-Thru Umbrella

1 60-inch Silver/White Umbrella

Also purchased a couple sets of color corretion gels, cinefoil, a stand/clamp to use my 580 ex II as an extra light.

 9.
Thanks for you input guys. I am so impressed with the photo.net community....So much more helpful and so much less angry/mean the dpreview community! They need to rename that site angrytrollphoto.com.

I am aware that a 3200 is way overkill for portraits, but I tend to have a very wide variety of assignments and need as much flexibility as I can possibly get. Fortunately my interior work is more on the order of bars and restaurants, as opposed to to gyms ect. I am thinking I will be going with 3 1600's and 1 3200 still, with the 3200 being for those times I need the extra power.
A 24 Tlit/shift is 3rd in line behind a new 1ds2 or 3/5d2 (dunno yet) and a 35 L. Sigh. I need to knock over a bank... on second thought I need to knock over two banks.

BTW.. Nice train shot Kent.
