    Amargosa River

          1

Surface water is only seen after substantial rains in the desert and

mountains upstream. The water had been at least 2 feet higher during

the night, but this is still the most that I have seen at this place.

I am looking forward to a great wildflower year in the Amargosa

Desert and in Death Valley, starting in a month or so.

Another scan of a 41 year old print. Minot was a french language

instructor at the Peace Corps training center on St. Croix, USVI.

Minot came from Mauritius, an island in the SW Indian Ocean.

    Aungshita,

Thank you for your comments. This was a 40 year old 3x5 print, and one of the first that I tried to scan and improve upon. I don't understand the term "black maturity", nor "grey gamma". I tried using Lightroom to process the scan, but I really don't know how to make this a stronger photo. Any help would really be appreciated.

I understand now about fill light, but at the time of the capture, I didn't own a flash, and would not have known how to use it anyway.

    Thanks again,

    John

Scanned from an old (1969) print. I just found it after many years,

but I still remembered taking this portrait with my new Spotmatic. I

was really proud of actually getting her picture against such strong

background light. It doesn't look nearly as good now as I remembered,

but time seems to take its toll.

Thank you both for your comments and advise. I will work on the focus especially. I have acquired a K20D, with allows me to make focus corrections with individual lenses. Hopefully that will help with that problem. As for cutting off her hair, that was a hasty composition, not cropping! I will certainly try using more fill flash.

As you said, Viviana is a beautiful girl, and I regret not getting photos that do her justice.

Again, thank you for your help.

    John
