Hi All
Based on your experience or existing kit, what do you think would be pros and cons of using any of following lenses on Canon 7D?
Primary use: Outdoor, landscapes, food, products and people. Good walk around, single lens kit.
1. Canon EF-S 15-85 USM IS Lens
2. Canon EF 24-105 f/4 L IS Lens
3. Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS Lens
If you have to suggest only one lens which one it would be (or it is already)?
Thank you as always.

7D comes with three custom set modes on dial. I am sure many would have been using it with different kind of setting for different usages. I thought it would be a good idea to share those style and get some valuable inputs before I design and decide what to set on them.
I read somewhere about using custom modes for (A) 1. Landscapes 2. Portraits 3. High Res RAW for special purpose
or (B) 1. Video-one 2. Video-two 3. etc etc
I was planning to use it as: 1. Standard + High contrast 2. Standard + High saturation 3. Standard + High contrast + saturation
Choices.. choices

Hi
This might look very basic or even silly question. I am confused however.
I did record some video on my 7D. When I play them on my computer using VLC Media Player or KM Player softwares, the video is been played in slow motion with no sound.
I shoot them with default canon settings on camera.
Does any one know what could be the reason?
Thanks

Any one has got any source of information, website etc for
What to refer for DSLR market trends, market share etc?

Thank you

@ Ken - I think I agree with you, its more of lesser experience
Its also true that I have not tried with RAW followed by jpeg conversion. I would surely give it a try tonight.. since I have already taken some nice photographs of Denver weather today.
Thank you everyone for your comments, they are all helpful.

Results of my photos has left me wondering. Photos that I took with 15-85 mounted on XTi resulted much better than what I took with Canon 7D. (f/8, Auto white balance, ISO 100-400, Faithful picture style)
I am trying to justify huge extra dollars on 7D for the image quality especially
Photozone review seems to be supporting my observation @ http://www.photozone.de/dslr_reviews/478_canon_eos_7d?start=2
Am I doing something terribly wrong?
Has anyone else observed noisy images on 7D?
Any experienced inputs would be vital.

@Sarah - Thank you so much for your guidance. I meant generally how long the DSLR works when maintained properly. I think everyone answered rightly.

-

Thanks to everyone who gave sincere response. I really appreciate them.
Others have fun with your own world.

-

Could you please provide your inputs based on your experience on what are some of the best websites to upload albums and share with friends, without loosing copyrights of images?
I heard that if you upload on picasa, by default you surrender image rights to picasa?

Generally what is the age of a DSLR? Provided one maintains it externally and internally from dust and weather and keeps away from chance of breaking.
Factors to consider..
DSLR Parts that determines the age..

I liked the design and finish.

I was waiting for Canon to announce one FF body in September. They already announced D60, but no other bodies.
Just trying to check is there any possibility of canon coming up with 3D or may be 5DM3 kind of body?
Should I wait? - I need to buy FF

-

Hi
Wondering would it be any rebate from Canon on 5D M II anytime in next 3-4 months?
Or may be any new FF model come out to match with 7D, which would in turn make 5DM2 prices lower?
I am planning to move from XTi to something.. not sure would it be 7D or 5DM2. I mostly would go for 5DM2

Another vote for 15-85. Excellently made, takes amazing pictures.

-

15-85 lens is 24-105 of EF-S world.. the day would come when canon would come out of orthodox naming convention and put L behind that

-

EF-S 15-85 USM IS lens. I know its very new lens. I already have 18-55 IS lens and bought this one. But I realized that the kid I had (18-55) was much better in the comparable range.. superb image quality. If one keeps aside USM and extra reach, 15-85 I found not worth the extra $600 or so.
I returned that lens back and now feeling very relaxed.. Sometime later I might buy 17-55 f/2.8 IS

-

If we keep assume 18-55 is sufficient, no need of USM or FTM...
I read on photozone.de that 18-55 IS lens has got highest center and border resolution on 15MP reviews, when compared to 15-85 IS and other lenses. Only 17-55 f/2.8 IS beats this kid.
How about using 18-55 IS lens with 7D? I am very curious to see the final resolution of image.
Comments?
Any one has got any samples?

With crop sensor affordability, more and more prosumer or semi-pro photographers started coming into field. Many of them shoot just for self satisfaction, as hobby which is really very rewarding w.r.t satisfaction and not money. This increased (and still increasing) crop sensor equipment demands.

Gap between excellent crop sensor camera and above avg full sensor camera is already narrowed by 5DMII and 7D. Similarly gap between above avg lens of full sensor world and excellent lens of crop sensor lens would also narrow down. L lens availability in crop sensor does not seem far to me.

Point is: With many hobby/semi-pro people shooting around, crop sensor camera like 7D would remain in better and more demand and one day people would stop comparing them like two different genders.

I am wondering is there any market survey or market data kind of links or websites where one can get data like:
1. Market share.. canon vs nikon vs others
2. Which canon lens is used most by say photo journalists / nature photographers / wedding or event photographers etc
3. Which is highest selling canon lens
All these kind of...
I know about few photography megazines, but thats it.. any other place to refer all these kind of information?
Thank you.

-

I agree what you both pointed out.
To be more specific: I meant, would full frame body improve overall resolution of photo? (Assuming same lens, focal length, exposure and and same megapixel even)

-

Considering 1.6 FOVCF of XTi, what are the best choices for normal zoom or standard/general purpose lens?
I considered 17-55mm f/2.8 but I found it not good on build quality, and its pricey considering a Non-L lens.
I have shortlisted 24-105 f/4 IS USM. If any of you have used it on 1.6 FOVCF camera body, is it a useful range? I also have 18-55mm IS kit lens which I can use if I need wider focal length.
I do not need f/2.8 really. Budget around $1000. Need IS. Preferable is EF mount.
Thank you.

-

I already have 18-55mm IS lens and was thinking buying another better general purpose lens. I considered 15-85 IS, 17-40 f/4 L, 17-55 f/2.8 IS and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for this.
Following table shows image quality/resolution figures from photozone.de. When I saw them, I was surprised to know how good 18-55 IS lens is when compared with biggies. Other lenses are better in border, but in center 18-55 IS competes really well.
I am sure this is not the only factor to consider while choosing a lens. Constant wide aperture, focal length range, build quality, distortions, color and contrast etc comes into play. And in many of these area my 18-55 IS might lag behind.
What else should I consider while choosing one lens out of this list? I am not much concerned about f/2.8.
Another questions: If all these numbers in the chart are so close, why to Canon charges more than $1000 for 17-55 and merely around $150 for 18-55 (comparison is only in f/5.6 to f/11)

Just like we have MTF charts to know image quality/resolution..
I am wondering how can we analyze a lens for its contrast and color rendition before using it? Are there any figures to refer?

-

@ Peter J - Yes, precisely right what you told of Investment. Thanks for your suggestions. I am narrowing down my search for either complete f/4 kit with IS on longer end lenses... or f/2.8 in standard range and f/4 in long range. That gives me Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS or Tamron 17-55mm f/2.8 VC and definitely 70-200mm f/4 IS w/o any doubt.
Difficulty here is.. one has to think of both art value (quality of images and equipments) and commerce value (money part)

Thanks. Yes I did use XTi and 18-55mm lens for more than a year. I am very keen on color, contrast and sharpness of lens so my selection would be based on that mainly. I can compromise other aspects if required.
