A couple of days ago I saw these for the first time. You have really done them justice.

    Lovely natural backdrop.

When I saw them I had my 40D with me (50mm 1.8 and flash) but forgot to make a picture. I could only have hoped for this result!

What lens and aperture did you use?

    Regards, Nico

  1. Nice, love the contrast.

The settings you used puzzle me a bit. Why did you use f10 is that a lens sweet spot? Or is it just the result of the other settings?

Wonderful! I like the DOF you used to show both detail and length in her hair.

    That really creates depth.

Love those eyes and composition. In short: wow!

I like the contrast and subtle background tones. But most of all, I like the eye level perspective. You place the viewer at the same height as the subject.

    Lovely reflections too.

    Your photo suggests movement.
Also, I like the lines both curved and straight.

The reflection in the glass is slightly distracting but hard to avoid...

  2. After a few minutes I realized that a compliment is also a critique... what a wonderful shot.

I like the DOF, her pose and look. Not to mention her eyes, WOW.

I find the lighter patch of hair a bit distracting. Did you use an umbrella and flash?

    Thanks for sharing, Nico

  3. Robert phrased my toughts very well :-)

These curves act as a kind of pulling factor: tempting you to view larger and larger. If I had made photo like this I would want it on the wall in the livingroom 2x2m! I really like these curves and lines.

  4. You'll find this sluice in the heart of Gouda. A pittoresque city in

    the Netherlands.

This sluice has 6 doors (3 sets) and is designed around 1600.

My photo doesn't really show the sluice. Only a quarter of the

levers, three buildings a bridge and a street lantern...

It is one of those sights you pass by regularly without seeing. I used

this field of view to sort of compress all this detail in one photo.

And used a Lightroom B/W high contrast preset to add a bit of 'punch'.

    Your feedback is most welcome.

Wow, how close were you? He(she?) looks so undisturbed.

I think it was a good idea to place his head in the top half of the picture. As if to underline his superiority.

Like the way you created the separation from the background. Just DOF or did you create a contour of some kind?

Again we have to bow to nature... What a beautiful design, I love the contrast/tones.

Like your portfolio too, esp. the squirrels.

There is so much to see. It invites you in and you loose track of time, at least I did. Each side or curve shows new textures/tones.

Truly lovely, but what is it? Or perhaps you shouldn't tell...

    Regards, Nico

  5. I really like the almost fluid like colours combined with a harsh silhoutte.

The tree is exactly in the right place from a composition point of view.

The bottom branch is a bit distracting. But what can you do, after all I like the 'unmanipulated' too.

    Regards, Nico

    Hi Liz,

Where do you find a white cat when you really need one...

Yuri is right about the stairs and the door giving depth. I don't mind the lighting so much. A partly overcast sky is usually more friendly.

I would've tried cropping from in between the orange shirt and red trousers. But keeping the same aspect ratio, the electrical lines and door light. As a result the bike would 'move' to the bottom right corner.

Arranging the objects isn't my thing. It either is nice enough for a photo or so nice it is worth recreating in a studio to achieve perfection?

Keep up the good work. Oh, and I almost forgot: lower the camera for a new perspective. As a dog would see the scene walking by. Added benefit: more out of focus street.

    Regards, Nico

It looks like you used focus as a powerful creative tool to separate the beautiful dancers from the group.

Intended or not, I think this worked great as you can just see their expression but the dancers get the attention they deserve.

    Wow! Regards, Nico

    Great street view.

I think there must have been numerous possible angles but this one is just great! The reflections in the wet sidewalk, the car headlights, the dark subject and umbrella makes this really beautiful.

    Regards, Nico

  6. I really like the mix of out of focus and subject motion. There is no clear isolated subject but why should there be any?

Until this photo I've never considered deliberately mixing these characteristics: thanks!

I think I would've cropped to exclude the top left corner.

    Regards, Nico

  7. Wow, what a beautiful piece of jewelry! If only one could design such beauty...

I love the silverlike appearance and the reflections, truly amazing!

I'm curious what was your distance to the 'subject' and the background?

    Regards, Nico

Water that behaves ilke a mirror with little tell-tales of its true fluid nature; beautitful!

All appears to be within DOF, was this intentional? If so then well done. At that short distance and angle.

I was wondering if the image would benefit from a increased attention to the lily and slightly softer surroundings (espescially in the top left) of the image).

    Regards, Nico

    PS.I'like your sunrises/sunsets and butterflies.
