1.
Hello all, First of all dont kill me, im just an amateur photographer, not really into the gadget side of it all.
Regardless of that I was extremely excited when my father cleared out his study room and found this gem, an old nikon he bought in his twenties, thats about 20-30 years ago. I have no idea what model it is, what its capable of.
Sure i have a nikon dslr, but i have no idea about their slrs, but what model is this ? Its really really moldy and needs cleaning. how much would that cost me, and is that really worth it? It has a 55mm lens which really needs a clean up too. in the box the original flash is still with it, didnt manage to take pictures.
is this something worth refurbishing?
also this might sound dumb but... i cant get the back to open, and i cant figure out how... not sure if theres any film still in it...

  2.
im thinking of buying a d5000 off a friend for less than half the price. great deal. but i realized that i cant use AF-D lenses with it , or at least AF is not supported.

I DO want to get a 50 mm lens, but i think getting the AF-S one is too pricey. Hence could i just get the AF-D 1.8 50 mm ? and learn to manual focus...

or should i just end up getting the 90D?

  3.
im NOT going to use live view, in fact i dont really care for it. The swivel screen is a nice option, but honestly i dont have any use for it since im not even using live view lol .
Im starting to see that the d 90 is a better choice for me, since i like how i dont have to navigate some menu to take pictures. Seems too fidgety .

  5.
Im a design student , and we were told to get a dslr as we need one for a lot of projects ad such.
I've never owned a dslr before. But i know basic ideas on how to work with aperture , shutter speeds, and im learning how to work in manual mode.

I have a friend selling his almost a year old d 5000 for half the price, includes everything that came with the kit including lens ( $ 700 sing or US $ 380 ) or i could get a d90 for full priced at ( $1300 sing or about US $ 700 something)
So the question is , is the d90 really worth the $600 sing more?

  6.
that price the d80 was body only, and i much rather start off with a kit lens, and later in the near future get the prime.
sorry for the typo, i meant i didnt have the cash for the d80, but enough for the d60 .
amazon is selling the d60 for around $480 with the VR kit lens .
I think i will end up getting the Sigma's 50mm or 30mm 1.4 HSM or the AF-s 50mm . just have to save up more. Or the other alternative is to get the canonXS which allows me to use some "cheaper" prime lenses

  7.
Im very likely to purchase the D60 , so im researching lens options.
One lens that im likely to get would be a prime lens , around 50mm . Something good for travel and is fast.

However it would need to be able to have an auto focus system , as the D60 does not have the built in motor.
The only 50 mm AF-s nikon has now is the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens but im hoping there are alternatives . Preferably not as costly...

  8.
thanks everyone for making it clear what the pros and cons are of each camera. But especially to Peter Blaise Monahon, yes you did cleverly point out that i did not clearly state what I wanted in a camera.
You asked why not stay with my current P&S, the answer is simple, the fact is its falling apart, the shutter is not opening/closing , its pretty old and the Picture quality is not clear/fuzzy , i suspect from dust or otherwise. Same with my film p&s, which is really old.
I take quite a few photographs on a day to day basis, I take alot of photographs from a car or bus. To me shutter speed is no issue, but it is the fact that i need to be able to take pictures quickly before my subject passes. This means a dslr would suit me better as there is relatively no lag/waiting time between pictures.
I plan to take pictures in mostly RAW rather than jpeg.
weight is also an issue, the pentax i know weighs the most. I will be carrying it with me everyday, so its best if it was not too heavy. However i have not carried the K200d , so i will need to go and try it out in person.
I also do the usual family photos. However i also do quite a few landscapes, so good wide lenses would be good, however i DONT need them super wide (again im just an amateur )
Having a decent amount of affordable lenses would be a super plus (decent meaning at least 1 or two of each type of lens)
Stabilization is VERY important , I often cant/dont use tripods.
I also do alot of self-portrait type photography. However this is mostly to showcase makeup. Special good quality here is not totally required (they will mostly be put on the internet)
I wont really need live-view.
hope this helps clear up what my criteria is.
lenses i would use , wide lens, prime 50 mm , and perhaps something with a slight zoom. but most likely i will just use the kit lens for awhile before purchasing other lenses.
thanks

  9.
so a newbie to photography here.
Upgrading from film and digital p&s .
All 3 are pretty competitively priced.
Planning to film landscape, vacations , city and day to day. And maybe makeup (make up on people)
which would you pick of the 3?
Im leaning towards the sony or pentax because of the in-camera stabilization ...
however the d 40 is like $100 cheaper, and its pretty popular.

Opinions anyone?

  10. I need to take close up of my lips for an art project. Close as in 10cm away.

Im using a canon powershot A250.

The pictures always have a terrible blur!!! its very bad. increasing the shutter speed, and opening the aperture does not help the blur.

    Im really frustrated here.

Even the macro mode does not help.

what can i do, after taking 50 shots, only ONE came out semi-clear...

    very frustrating, please help!

  11. What are the opinions on Lomo?

Firstly what do you think of Lomo cameras?

Many say they are really just crappy cameras that have been marketed well, that they can simply just fall apart...

What do you think of the "lomo rules"?

They say not to think, and just shoot...

Which results in sometimes candid, but IMO crappy shots...

  12. Hi everyone, i know i've been asking an aweful lot of questions concerning cameras or types of cameras im

interested to buy. Well i have yet another one, so please forgive me.

I was recently considering the pz-1 pentax 35mm slr, but i realised it was far larger and heavier, and too complex for

    what i want.

Basically what i am looking for is an advanced point and shoot film camera.

It HAS to be light and compact(not super compact.. but at least of decent weight, i'll be carrying it with me all the

    time)

It would be GREAT if i could have some aperture and shutter speed control.

Flash is not required but it would be nice.

Im now looking at the LC-A+ lomo camera, as it has amost everything i could want(small, light, shutter speed, double

exposure), but being a lomo it is overpriced and i've heard bad things about its built quality.. im also not a huge fan

of vignettes, and always caputring odd colours...

So anyone know of anything similar? or any suggestions?

    THANKS!

  13. sure best place to go is perninsula center, in the basement and first floor are two popular shops, rons camera and cathay camera shops. next door is perninsula hotel which has ruby camera store, these are popular.

Nothing much to be careful about, but ask them to throw in freebies if possible .

    thanks everyone

  14. I have the chance to get the pz 1 / pz 1p for very cheap, its in good condition and comes with the 28-80mm FA SMC

and flash. Its going for a really good price ( like $150 singapore $)

Anyone know anything about this camera? Is it too big? is it very heavy?

Im new to photography and i only have a digital and film point and shoot. My film point and shoot is really old and

    starting to act up.

im also planning to get a dslr (the k200d) soon. Should i keep my money and buy a better film point and shoot and

invest the $150 in better lenses? or just so ahead and get both the pz 1 and the dslr.
