holy smokes... I just scanned this entire thread. I'd just like to say 'thank you' to Vijay for providing all the information.
Question for you, Vijay: When you say:
'The digital representation of the analog value can be 8 bits, 14 bits, 16 bits or whatever. This increases the precision of the representation, not the dynamic range. The actual dynamic range is a voltage ratio, the "dynamic range" of a 16-bit vs. a 32 bit representation is a meaningless number, since the max value - FFFF for 16-bit, or FFFF_FFFF for 32-bit represents the same voltage - the saturation voltage of the photo cell. '
Does the number of bits impact the 'tonal range'? what is the metric used to refer to the granularilty *between* the shadows and the highlights?

I'm curious, Jerry, to know what you did.
I happened to pick up a 50mm AI 1.8 for $80 and I love it..
HOWEVER - I am finding myself spending quite a bit of time in post processing correcting exposure since I cannot meter with it.
Now... I hear the AF-D version calling my name..... AAAGGGGGHHH!!!!!
I've only had it (the 50 1.8 AI) for a few months. Maybe I should give myself more time and perhaps my metering skills will improve. It *sure* would be nice to shoot in shutter priority with a prime lens, though is what I'm thinking.

Michael,
No I haven't tried that. What is MAC? I just 'MAC used camera' and got nothing but Apple related stuff I've
heard of KEH. Thanks for your response!

I just acquired a Sekonic L228, but there is a missing battery cap. If anyone has one of these meters and does
not need the battery cap, I would greatly appreciate it 'being made available' to me :)

I am *so glad* I found this thread. I just bought an AI 50 1.8 used for $80. Sounds like I payed a bit much,
but I really love the solid build. The sharpness is astonishing even on my 'little old' d40.

they can be stingey all they want in terms of PR for all I care. What *matters* to me is quality products at an affordable price. The latter criteria, obviously, being open to interpretation (unfortunately for me)

No-way would I give an 11 yro a $400 camera. That's insane in my book, but that's just me. That's just how I was raised and where I come from.
I would get him a $40 AE-1 film slr *OR* a P&S with manual control (e.g. Canon A580).
Those technical aspects are actually very easy and very predictable. I don't see why an 11yrold wouldn't be able to grasp them, given the right mentoring.

I'm taking back all my opinions about the 18-200 mm VR lens. I wish I had it :)

I have the 18-55 and 55-200VR. It's a hassle to go back and forth, but I think I prefer it to the 18-200. According the photozone.de at least, the 18-200 VR has significan barrel and pincusion distortion. Any 18-200 owners care to comment?

My 24mm F2.8 Nippon Kogaku is my favorite. Very wide (even on DX) and good in low light
