1.
Hey!
How do you guys feel about having a UV filter over the 40mm? I purchased the Hoya filter, but after placing it on, I see its got a little longer...not by a lot, but its similar to how it looks when it focuses forward.
Do you guys think this is necessary to have on this particular lens or should I return the filter? I'm leaning towards just returning the filter...
Thanks in advance,

  2.
Hey guys,

After everyone helped me purchase my recent setup (T3i), which came with a kit lens. I took the kit lens around shooting and it does add a little bulk in my backup.
I made a small little project for myself to shoot 3 "good" images a week, but I was thinking if I should pick up the new 40mm 2.8 at that amazing price or should I spend a little more and pick up the 50mm 1.4?
I'm also working on my thesis for grad school and wanted to add some video footage of interviews and figured I could practice and use this cam as well.
Also, any external mic options at a good price?
Thanks everyone and happy sunday!

  3.
Ah you guys are amazing! thank you to everyone who posted! great advice.
I walked over to Adorama and grabbed the Canon T3i kit (refurb) for $550, great deal.
So moving forward, I'm going to take it slow and not purchasing anything until I get a grasp the basics and my needs. Who knows, this might be all I need...
The reason I want to get back into photography is because I'm getting married in a few months and me and wife plan on going on travels. I want to try to capture our memories as best as I can. I know I won't be amazing by then but I'll be in a better place then I am today. And someday when we have kids I can have some great memories...

  4.
Hey!
Thanks everyone! I agree that the system doesn't matter. I was looking up lens prices and I see most Nikon lens cost less then Canons, this might out weigh borrowing my friends lens. When I had my 40D before, they (friends) didn't really help much...not everyone is a good teacher.
@Dan M, That has been one of my issues in the past, the "where I will learn". I have the exposure book but where do I go to practice? sucks to wait until the weekends only since I work 9-6 and get home like 8ish. I need to find a way to practice at home but I find it tough to shoot in-doors without a tripod or a flash.
Any recommendations?

  5.
Hey guys,

I'm making a second attempt at getting back into photography and trying to start with a clean slate. Few years ago I had jumped in and felt overwhelmed. I had a 40D and a 24-70L lens and a 50mm lens. I had a hard time grasping the manual controls and eventually just gave up. I felt like the more I read up on the subject the more it confused me and became more technical and less fun.
Now I feel like I'm going to take it slow and basic and give myself years to learn. I'm thinking of starting of with either the Ti3 or D5100. I've always used Canon but I presently own no lens and sold everything from my previous setup. The reason I'm considering the D5100 is because Best Buy has the kit for $650. I know the Ti3 has tons of features but I don't know if I'll ever get around to use them and by the time I do, I'd probably would have out grown the camera. I do have the concern of joining the Nikon camp in the long run, being a Canon user and most of my friends use Canon.
I also don't know if the Kit Lens would be good to learn with. I mostly want to just shoot street photography and portraits. Would the kit lens be good for learning? or should I purchase a slightly better lens to practice with?
Thank you for taking the time to help me out.
6.
Hey guys, I'm really interested in picking up a camera I can carry with me alot more often then my 40d.
I've been doing research for days and have come to no conclusion.
I was set on getting the G11, then..i read more lol and now im confused.
G11, great cam, but heavy and big ( i already have the 40d), I also question the importance of a hot shoe? or filter attachment. I love the flip out screen.

s90, Sweet, small, all the manual features, doesn't look so cool though, no hot shoe, but shoots at f2, also no view finder.

Lumix Lx3, i love the way it looks, very vintage looking, LEICA lens, hot shoe, bigger then the s90 ans also 1yr old. Probably due for an update.

Any advice?

  7.
@Peter: Yeah, I'm just questioning the price, also the risk of getting a bad copy, ugh...But yeah it is a tempting fast lens.

@Ben: I have the 580 ex 2 and a wireless system from Alien bees. hmm G11 does seem like the route to go. I've seen some amazing pictures from it.

@vick, Steve:I want to learn photography like i learned graphic design, learning to see and a lot of practice. I don't want to skip lights and go into studio lighting yet, because I feel I'm still not there yet. It's been less then a year of me learning to use to my camera technically, now I want to spend alot of time practicing and seeing.

I'll continue researching, if any members come up with ideas, please advise. Thank you

  8.
Hey,

I'm in need of help/advice on a recent purchase. I have been using my 40d on and off through out the year (not nearly as much as I want too), I have 24-70mm f 2.8L and the 50mm 1.8 lens. After setting my new goals for 2009, I tried to figure out why I don't shoot to very often. I came to realize because it isn’t “ convenient” for me. I have to go outside or try to set things up. Which I don't mind, but I don't do it often. I’m no way a Photographer; I’m a graphic designer. I have a strong interest in anything creative, And I would like to use my own photo's in my work. So I’ve decided I want to practice everyday at least for an hour. But my lens are to long for me to shoot or practice indoors. My rooms are 10’x11’, with not much light. And sometime’s I want to go to the bars or events in NYC and bring my 40d camera and 24-70, is just to heavy and people act weird when it’s in their face. The 50mm lens is great outside; but doesn’t work for me in my small indoors room. It becomes a short Telephoto.

So I’m thinking of going in a few directions:

Either getting one of this lens, 28mm 1.8, Sigma 30mm 1.4 or the 35mm f2.

This would give me a “ normal” lens that’s lightweight I can practice with.

All these lens have their plus and minus from the research I collected over the week.

28mm 1.8, Has mixed reviews on IQ, suffers a lot from CA and falls a bit short of the 50mm mark

Sigma 30mm 1.4, would be great but its only for crop senors, what if one day I upgrade to a full frame, never know. Also I hear they're are a lot of bad copies out there, I'm not trained enough to really spot a bad lens, would suck when I get better and I realize I have a bad copy, after they're 3yr warranty is up.

35mm f2, its a good price, old motor I hear, but I hear it takes great pictures.

A friend recommended I just get the new G11 canon; I can shoot in doors and take it out with me. I don’t know if the lens is fast enough for me to practice indoors? Its f2.8-4.5; so it’s not a fixed Aperture like the above prime lens.

I’m very confused of which route to go, I want to stay within the $500 range.

Any advice would be a great.

Thank you in advance and Happy holidays to everyone.

Amir

P.S.: Sorry for all that writing.

  9.
Hey guys, I know this question has be asked a lot; and I've been reading for a while on which one to get, but people seem to recommend the Canon 24-70 2.8L which I have, I purposely love the lens, but it is way to heavy after a while, even though I'm physically fit, I can't lug this around. So what other options would I have? or should I just just buy a g10 and call it a day.
Thanks in advance everyone.

  10.
Hey. Quick opinion, I have a 40d and a 580exII flash I picked up recently. I want to use it off camera. I have all the mounts and stands I need. I just don't know what would be the most cost effective and best way for me to connect the camera to the flash. I have purchased the Interfit INT412 radio trigger( I can't find any reviews on it), but scared to open it, so i can return it without being asked any questions. I'm wondering if I should have just got a 10ft pc cord (male to male) or is the int415 good enough to use.

thanks in advance.

  11. Hey guys! Im taking a photography course and I have a project where I have to shoot a topic or subject as much as

i can during the course and apply the technique's I've learned in the course. I work 5 days a week and sometimes

on the weekends. So I don't get much of a chance to shoot. I work in the New york city and take the train

everyday to work. Any Idea's for a person who's trying to balance a work life and learn photography?

  12. I'd go with a 2.8 without IS. 4L is just to slow, its sharp, but slow. but it all depends on what your going for in terms of style of your pictures. even then the 2.8 is probably better because you can stop down. 4l is supposedly faster but eh its like under a magnifying glass if you ask me.

Which ever you get tho, you'll be happy!

  13. well any indoor shoots will me done in a studio ill be renting, I'm trying to build a portfolio so figured i'd slowly build a good collection of lens and lights. The only lens I have at the moment is the 50m 1.8. and the freebie that game with the 40d, the 28 to 135 USM IS

Yeah forgot to mention, I'm trying to shoot more artsy conceptual shots not weddings or family pictures or events

  14. Hey people, Im into portrait photography mostly but not restricted too it only, I can't decide between a Canon

    EOS EF 28-70/2.8 L or the 70-200

2.8L? Any recommendations? It's my first lens purchase so im scared a bit. my only issue with the 70 - 200 is

the size, incase I wanted to do street shots or whatever. And with the 28-70, my issue is 70mm enough for

portraits with a 1.6? Any input would be helpful.

    Side note: I'm using a 40d

  15. anyone know how the Sigma 70-200 2.8 Ex /Apo/HSN compares to the Canon 70-200 2.8 L ? Any feed back would be

great! I found a good price on the Sigma for $400. Just thinking if it's worth it.

  16. Hey guys, Right now I'm using a 300d, and I've been taking photography classes and I feel like I want to upgrade.

it's either between a 40d or a new lens. I'm really interested in getting into FHM/Maxim Styling shootings, Any

know a good lens for photo shoots like that? Thanks in Advance
