You could try SilverFast as well. There are free demo versions for the 5400.
The SE Plus version for your Minolta is about $100 and it features Multi-Exposure, which maybe helps a lot.
It increases the scanners dynamic range, thus scanning every detail in the lights and shadows. SilverFast won't cut any histograms.

David Brooks from shutterbug has tested the SilverFast targets.
Hes says they are the best you can get for scanning kodachromes:

"... SF is known to charge for upgrades when a User goes to a more recent OS. ..."This is not true. You can change your operating system w/o having to buy a new license or upgrade.

But you have to download the fitting installation file. Burak, if you can't fix things on your own, ask the LaserSoft suport team for help as Scott recommended. I also have made good experiences only.

Hamrick doesn't manufacture IT8 targtes.
I do trust SilverFast: software and target from one source, perfectly balanced.

Vuescan has no dust and scratch removal functionality applicable to kodachromes, ICE is not working !
Such a feature is unique to SilverFast (iSRD).
There are many more SilverFast pros, which maybe aren't obvious at first glance.

Ahh, I just got the SilverFast newsletter dec. 09.
They are offering Kodachrome IT8 calibration targets now.

The question how to scan kodachromes should be answered therewith. :)

Wow, and know they are offering Kodachrome IT8 Calibration targets.
(So, the initial question is answered 2,5 years later :)
"For all those customers intending to finally scan all their valuable Kodachrome slides with consistent precise colors LaserSoft Imaging® is now offering Kodachrome IT8 Calibration targets with integrated bar code out of their own high quality production."
Although this thread is a little bit older, the following could be interesting for the nikon users, who've posted
above,
or for anyone looking for info on the discussed issues in the future.

- A few months ago SilverFast added support for all nikon scanners on Mac OS 10.5 Leopard. (Directly, not
through the MAID-module).
- Silverfast has it's own infrared cleaning tool ("ICE") called iSRD (infrared Smart Removal of Defects).
They have improved this tool for the latest SilverFast 6.6.0r3 version, especially for scanning Kodachromes
!

You may want to have a look at the newsletter oct. 08 for more info on
Kodachrome scanning.

Don't forget about the Multi-Exposure feature (for increasing the dynamic range). It's important when scanning
very dense slides.

hmm, Multi-Exposure seems to be a very important and powerful feature.
I haven't recognized this until I stumbled over the following:

SilverFast has won the prize BEST COLOR MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE OF THE YEAR 2008,
awarded by the European Digital Press Association (EDP).

EDP: "The award is given for improving the dynamic range of most scanners thanks to its Multi-Exposure®
feature and for creating ICC profiles automatically."
-
A few things, which haven't been mentioned so far:

>> "I already knew, from Silverfast, which is forced to use Nikon drivers that the NikonMAID drivers for this
scanner
>> did not function, and had not been updated by Nikon for Intel-based Mac computers."

SilverFast 6.6 adresses Nikon film scanners directly without any detour through the MAID-module now.

>> I also understand Silverfast does not work under Leopard.

The new SilverFast version 6.6 supports all Nikon film scanners on Mac OS 10.5 Leopard,
where Nikon closed their support for Nikon Scan on Mac OS.
I strongly recommend to use SilverFast, it's the most powerfull software of these three.
Though it takes it's time to get firm with SilverFast, you get the best scans afterwards.
There's a lot of helpful documentation downloadable from LaserSofts homepage, including the complete manual.

The SE version should work well for beginners. Advanced users may like to upgrade to the Ai or Studio version.

regards
Hi Benny,
have you read the latest SilverFast Newsletter (May 2008) ?

Its says: "Nikon Film Scanners now 100% Leopard (Mac) compatible - from SilverFast version 6.6 on"
but : "Presently only 35mm film scanner will be supported ヨ a new version for LS-8000 and LS-9000 film scanners will follow soon."

Since I'm eager to use SilverFast on my Mac (Leopard) with my Nikon 9000 scanner,
I asked their support, when a compatible version for the 9000 will be available.
They replied, they are working on it and it would be distributed in maybe three or four weeks.

I willingly wait these few weeks, cause SilverFast is such a great scanner software.

best regards
