Hello,
I'd like some advice on possible ways of setting up a small packshot studio within £1,500 cost including a camera. In particular I'd be grateful if you could suggest the most essential lighting items as I don't have much experience with studio lights — flash vs continuous, umbrellas vs softboxes, etc.
Products to be primarily shot in the studio would be printed items such as books, catalogues, annual reports, calendars. The studio itself is a 3x3.5m room with window w/blinds).
The shots would be used mainly for a website but I'd like to be able to produce at least a full A4 print @300dpi (min. 10Mpix).
As the budget is quite tight, I was thinking of the following spec:

Camera: Canon EOS 500D/550D

Lens: Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM (or a couple of manual prime lenses like a 24mm f/2.8 and a 100mm f/2.8 macro).

Tripod: optional, not too fussy here

Lighting kit: a big "?"

Backdrop: white and black muslin with support

I'd appreciate your opinion.

Hi,
I hope this is the correct forum to post a job offer.

I'm looking for a food photographer with own equipment to do a couple of days (I presume) worth of work on location in Greater London area.

Please contact me directly at alex@printhouse.co.uk , preferably with a link to your portfolio (of food photography) and financial expectations. I will also try to answer any specific questions.
Thank you!

Regards,
Aleksander Lenart

Just a thought triggered by Martin's post: do you know (I don't) which era of digital research the current dedicated slide scanners belong to? Late 90's? Early 00's? Now think of the progress of digital sensors for the last 3 years. Now you just need to put that full frame 24, 36, 48+ megapixel CMOS into a new Leica dedicated camera-scanner and voila! :)

The Gadget Show's digital vs film 'test' was a complete disaster. In therms of the 'experts', not the film. A 'green hue'..?

Hi,
I've just signed up as I couldn't find any up-to-date information on professional film
processing in London (I only have found posts from 2006 and older).
I'm looking for a place (or person) where I could have my slides and B&W 35mm
film professionally treated. For a couple of years I've been using Metro but recently
the quality of their service gone so bad (scratches, smudges, really poor scans
and a stubborn manager) that I need to find something else.
I don't usually need fast turnarounds and I prefer to speak to the person who
knows about/does the job.
Thanks.
Adjustable small boom arm for accessories
in Lighting Equipment

Hello,
I'm looking to purchase an adjustable boom arm for accessories/modifiers (not flash heads) to use in my studio. Could you point me to a place where I can buy it in the UK?
Not really sure how to name this thing correctly, so I'll assist myself with a photo:

It's a highly adjustable/bendable arm I can attach various thing to — gobos, reflectors, etc.
