"However, Leica certainly did not have the right approach towards the digital M. Yes, they were completely correct about the problems, which we are now seeing on the RD-1-- vignetting, focusing, lack of picture quality compared to film, etc."
I am not entirely sure the claim that the RD-1's picture quality is lacking compared to film is entirely valid.
Also the focusing issues on the RD-1, by most accounts, are a combination of the short rangefinder base (so the equivalent Bessa film bodies have the same constraint), and mis-alignment of the rangefinger mechanism. I do take the point about the small sensor/crop factor/vignetting :-)

Marc,
I can confirm that the Fujifilm NP-80 battery will fit into the Epson charger, and
seems to work just fine

I belive HP now has the 8450 out....and it seems an improvement over the
model it replaces. I came across a review, here:

Howard,
It was probaby hasty of me to get a Japanese import from Tin Cheong, but it
was there at available :-)
Would you happen to know where I can get an English user manual and
software disc?
Thanks in advance

I would like to add my own request to this one - this is the price of early adoption I guess...
I get nervous when the menu says "calibrate needle" then, says "be careful" :-)
Was trying like crazy to find what exactly is the metering area, and if there is a spot meter option as well, and the English menu would have come in handy
Ed, I did try to install the software -on the XP machine all I got were Japanese menus and buttons - did not even know which to click!
On the OS X, the only language maenu choice in the installation screen was for Japanese - I did not go further and perhaps I should have, just to see if the English options

It's for cocking the shutter - at least that is what this non-Japanese fluent
person can figure out from the Japanese manual - it's late and the battery is in
the charger so will have to play with it tomorrow

The smoothest softest nib I have is on a Faber Castell (alright a Graf von
Faber Castell) - can't remember the model, but I have the one with the sterling
silver cap and the wooden body

ALPA claims differences in manufacturing tolerances and such like, resulting
in better film flatness on the ALPA

and the 28 Summicron becomes a 42mm "standard lens" :-)

A shortcut may be to use something like this:

HI Ernie,
This probably will not make you feel any better, but isn't it true that most
places in HK (and indeed in Asia) do not deal in trade-ins or returns in the
American sense? I am not surprised that Wing Shing did not want to take the
camera back, but I believe the market practice is that once something is sold it
is deemed used, and if the shop in question does not deal in used gear, they
will not of course take it back. This may not apply if the equipment itself was
actually faulty, of course - but I would not have thought that after you used it
and found the noise unacceptable (to you), that they would agree it was faulty
in that sense

I myself am holding back on purchase, with the choice between the A2 and the LC-1. 28-200 is very tempting in a walkaround camera with image stabilization - which works by the way - you can see it on the LCD instantly when you turn it on.
Interesting statement in the LC-1 review; the reviewer stated early on that the LC-1 was still not as good as a Canon 300D, while being more expensive.
On the other hand the A2 could turn out to be in the same class as the Sony 828, which according to MR, is similar in quality to a 10D/300D with an L class zoom
Then again there is the digital M and the Epson/Cosina!
Interesting times :-)

Just saw review of above, and followed the link in the review to the forum
discussion - interesting findings - the reviewer actually prefers the Panasonic
for handling/grip. Best news for me was that price in HK is a not unreasonable
USD1,170/- for the Panasonic with the Digilux 2 USD 500/- more!

I also hope that "better quality pixels" as several have mentioned includes expanded dynamic range. Many Leica M users use black & white film, and having sensors with a 6-7 stop coverage might be OK for colour, but arguably insufficient for B&W.

I believe Voigtlander makes angle finders that are shoe-mountable, although I
seem to rememebr that they have various attachments for specific (wide
angle) focal lenghts - don't know about the 35 or 50 mm perspectives

Borrowing an idea from a Leica book I read, what about the idea of using a
tabletop tripod as a chestpod?
Cheers,

I have had some success with using the Leica table top tripod as a chestpod

I think that most of the camera shops have varying prices depending on the shipment against which they are quoting - if the Yen goes up then so do prices - I know it can be upsetting but that is the way they set their pricing, so if your inquiry and payment were very far apart in terms of timing that could explain the difference.

Hi Thanks for the response
Not unhappy with the Metz at all but, I only currently use it with my Leica. I seem to have heard somewhere that there may be compatibility issues in low light situations, which the TLA 360 may avoid since it is a Contax flash.
My situaition is that I need a flash for the Contax 645, but in order to use the Metz I will have to buy an adaptor, and the price is not that far away in Hong Kong from the cost of a new TLA 360!
-
Hi
Does anyone have feedback on the functionality between these two flashes
on a Contax 645 - I have the Metz and I hear mixed feedback on the 360...
Thanks

Adding a late vote for the Plaubel Makina 67 (or 670). Talk about sharp and
saturated!
Dennis, I believe the 67W had a 55mm lens and I would be interested to hear
from anyone who had one available for sale in good condition
I figure one of each on a trip would be cool :-)

Bronica RF 645 - it's a rangefinder, it handles very well, lenses (only three though) saturated, sharp, good bokeh

Photo Scientific @ Stanley St it's nearer the Lan Kwai Fong End - go up
D'Aguilar St, first right turn - right there at the corner next to the 1010 shop on
the left after you turn
Failing that another shop (forget the name) further on the right on Stanley St,
almost opposite the Apple store
