    Hi,

I do not have any in depth experience with demented people. I have however met some, and they did not remind me of death as this image does. The first feeling I get when I see this image is a person in terminal state, waiting for his or her death. This is as the picture stands here on its own. In a series the interpretation might change dramatically.

I don't have any specific opinion on whether the dark triangle should be there or not, but think that if that area had been filled with pillows to the person would have been completely locked in, like in a small closet. The dark triangle opens up the room. I don't feel it "creeps on" like death as much as the shadows in and around the persons face does.

I like the double exposure-like appearance, as well as the harsh light. It amplifies the feeling of "change" from life to death. The double exposure injects "life" (movement=life) into the image, the strong light and the environment makes me feel like being in a hospital, and the dark shadows, especially in the persons eyes hints about death creeping into the body of the person.

Hope this was of any help. Good luck with the contest. And yes, I like the image. It makes me think.

    Cheers,

  1. An interesting image. Still, I cannot seem to be able to see where he is falling. Since he is placed on the top of the image it in a way looks like he is falling downwards. But the bungee suggests that he is falling upwards in the image (the bungee stretches from below towards the top). From that i deduce (by reason) that the image must be taken from below (because the heaven is above it cannot be from above) and that he is falling towards us and the top of the image (outwards from the jumping place?). But this is a deduction, not something my eye catches immediately. Then there is the light that says he has the sun behind his back which suggests that he is falling towards the bottom of the image.

All these clues that are somewhat contradictory makes an immediate impression that is static, or confusing. He is standing still in the air, flying, not falling. In addition the vignetting is working in the same way, constraining outwards movement.

Yellow and blue are contrasting colors that add liveliness to the image, as well as the jumpers pose and facial expression.

  2. Tommy and Larry, thank you for your opinions. I appreciate them and they are very welcome.

Larry, I agree that this is an image that is best viewed large. Maybe I should revisit my standard settings of 800 pixels along the longest edge.

I am struggling a bit with using the manual thirty-something years old 300 mm on an APS-C size sensor (and without a tripod!), but this image is just good enough for an A2 print (which I also happen to have on a wall, printed on a 3880).

  3. I assume it is a sort of house or a shelter built into a cliff, but can see that the shadows and texture of the cliff resembles a somewhat surreal fire and smoke coming out of the roof of the house. The most interesting part i think, is the shapes and tones in the cliff's texture which add an almost religious dimension to the image.

    Left behind

I'm the one being left behind in the darkness while the juvenile crow (or whatever) is about to fly into the brightness.
I like the image, but not the feeling.

Generally, I believe that titles that only repeat what's in the image restricts the thoughts and narrows the interpretation room. If I disregard the title, the image opens up for interpretations far beyond what is shown.

The blurriness of the image (looks like soft focus to me) don't bother me as the image stands here (neither do it add anything interesting), but it might not suit a print. This is of course only of hypothetical interest (to me) since the image was not presented on a print.

    The Chief

          20

I see a man listening, waiting for a demanded answer from the two people in front. He's not angry, neither is he pleased. He is just very strongly focused at the two people, waiting for their answer answer. He is emotionally involved. The blur makes the two people in front appear insignificant, of lower rank, so he is the chief, yes.

It is very interesting how this image was taken (described by Olaf in the comments under the original). Someone once said (I don't recall who) that photography is much about making relations between things that in reality is completely unrelated. This is an example of such an image.

I like this image, because it is almost impossible to not be moved by it.

  4. Yes, this photo was taken in the morning. The morning with its dew, rain or as here sleet (the image is taken in early spring) often gives saturated fresh colors and also the light is very soft. There is only one problem with the morning, and that is to escape the warmth of the duvet.

Thank you for visiting this image.

    Hillel's Show

Even if (almost all of) the subject is captured in a short and motionless moment, the whole body of the person speaks of movement. Is he stopping a movement? Or initiating a movement? Is it slow and controlled? Or fast and explosive? How did he end up there, and where is he going next? I think all these undetermined states, all these possibilities, makes this picture interesting and intriguing, a picture that will in a way look a little different every time one looks at it.

Free as a lonely bird, or was it lonely like a free bird? Anyhow:

Sharing your thoughts are much appreciated. And thank you for sharing

    your time.

In my opinion, when processing is so obvious as here, it is over the line. What might have been a realistic street scene is made into a caricature and it makes me start to lose faith in the history's realism and authenticity.

  5. To me this image illustrates the modern way of experiencing the world, as a sightseer, following directions to where other people think there is something interesting to see. The paved road weighs as much as nature (in this image that is) which reinforces the impression. I cannot see what comes after the tunnel, but it surly looks like it's only a small part of the experienceable world.

  6. Hi

I see a (to me uncommon) yellow flower that likes to grow in a shaded  place.

The flower is in the shade whilst the background is sunlit (or at least not in the shade). Since you have left some branches of an overhanging tree (?) along the upper edge of the image this feels natural. The flower grows under the tree where there is shadow.

Despite the sort of "turbulent" background in this image, it is the flower that catches the eyes. One of the reasons for that (as I see it) is that the flower opens towards the left where my eyes enters the picture. Like a baseball glove catches the flying ball, the flower will catch my gaze and bring it to the center of the flower. Another reason is the contrasting colors. The yellow flower and the blue sky in the background are complementary colors and will reinforce each other, make them stand out from the rest. And a third reason is of course that the flower is the largest object and the only thing that is sharp. The unfocused  background also makes for a good depth in the image.

Of all your flower photos, I liked this one the best.

    Cheers,

    Frode

    Upside down

          27

This image makes me think of an upside down reflection of 5 people walking on a beach an overcast and cold day. To me, the upside-down presentation of this image do not add any new meaning or interesting aspect. It only has the effect of closing the doors for the possible interpretations that the upright image might have had. And maybe that is the reason why it was rotated. The visual sense (at least my) very clearly registers that there is something unreal with this image. This makes for a huge distraction if one really wanted to communicate something else that unreality with this image (which I don't think was the intention, the title also suggests that)

    Best wishes,
    Frode Langset
