I woke early to take sunrise on the shore of Ajman but noticed this old man working very early when everybody else was asleep.

Why would you want a different system for your backup? IMO, your backup should be able to use the same lenses and accessories you have. Why not get a used 40D for your backup instead?

I don't suppose we use different cameras here in Middle East. Outside temp here can easily go above 50 deg C during summer.
Don't worry...

I thought for a while that it is very far...

Wow that sucks! If you had that much bad luck, you might as well change brand.

Tough.
I wouldn't go for options 1 & 2 since they are mostly overlapped. 18 (or 17) is not really very wide for 40D. Option 3 would be moe appealing to me and the fact that you will go FF next year.
Good luck.

Out of curiosity, don't you miss the AF system of D700? Don't get me wrong, I love my 5D (classic) but I wish the outer AF points have been crossed type.

I was a bit disappointed the tripod ring mount has to be purchased separately again :)

My suggestion is
70-200 f/4 IS
Tamron 17-50
and 50 1.4

Alberto
Try them both on a camera store (if there is one accessible to you). You may get an idea which one is best for you.
As for your choices, I'll take either of them. I like the AF system and built in speedlite commander of the 7D and I like the IQ of the 5DII than 7D (that is my own taste). But at the moment I am still enjoying and contented with 5D classic + 40D combo. I bought myself a ST-E2 to stop thinking of the 7D's speedlite commander. :)

Karl
Have you checked if there is clipping on the RGB histogram on DPP?

I have a friend/colleague who started with Sony A200 and acquired Sony/Minolta lenses for quite sometime and wanted to 'upgrade' to full frame. He thought of A850 but then got himself a Canon 5D classic, 100 macro and 17-40L. What a contrasting story.
BTW, I have some minolta A lenses (beercan, mini-beercan, 28 2.8 and 50 1.4) which are good lenses and will work on sony dslr, I can recommend those to you except the 28 2.8. My main gears are Canon but I shoot Sony/Minolta and contax once in a while.
Enjoy your A850. It's a nice camera. Wish I could say the same for the system esp. flash.
Cheers

There are also ebay knock off of the ezybox hotshoe which sells around 50USD. I have one and have been very happy with it.

Wow the 70-200 f/4 IS is the only zoom on the top 10 list (updated version on Bob's link above). That just goes to show how good this lens is.

I suggest you read this article. I learned a lot from it.
Have you looked at CTR-301P? They have transmitter for Sony hotshoe. The receiver though are for ISO hotshoe (if the name is right - meaning for Canon or Nikon, etc.) flashes. I have found them very reliable and they are very cheap. Bought them on ebay from hkyongnuo.

Probably it will work with the sony dslr without any adapter - I am using Minolta 50 1.4 AF, 28 2.8 AF and 70-210 4 AF on my Sony A200 camera with no problem.
I did not find any adapter to use it on my Canon bodies. I have one Minolta MD rokkor with adapter (without optics) but it will not focus to infinity when mounted on my Canons.

Lucky you.
Here, memory cards are just anywhere. Films are difficult to find let alone developing lab. :(

100 2.8 macro can be too long to use for portrait for kids but will be better for insects compared to 60 2.8 macro.
i chose the 100 macro because i have sigma 50 1.4. but for one lens solution, 60 macro might be better for you specially the XTi is a small body (compared to my 40D). balance will be better me thinks.

Op-tech pro here as well. It's not perfect but I find it comfy enough for my use. And yeah with multiple cameras on your body, it can get be bulky.

I purchased recently the portable manfrotto 5001B and I am very much happy with them. If you will be using flash guns only, I think these will suffice.
