1. My son was born last August, and I had a wedding in July that I backed out on. I have underlying medical issues also that complicated things a bit and since we were also building our new house at the same time, I decided to take a year off from wedding photography. I did do one at the six week mark, right after I found out, and I was exhausted afterwards. Just don't push yourself too hard, and if you shoot while you're pregnant, take an assistant to carry bags, etc. Your health and your baby's is the most important thing.
  2. I've been following comments posted after mine with avid interest the past 24 hours. I want to thank each of you that have defended my stance and given the wonderful feedback that you have on my photography. It is uplifting and encouraging.

The two comments above mine really hit home with me - Walter's and Will's. I know ratings are needed for the advertisers, and to keep the site financially afloat, but there is ALWAYS room to improve on something, and in this case, that something is the rating system. Brian, are you willing to consider changes based on the suggestions of your paid users? I think that if enough mature, level-headed, smart, respectful, and open-minded people come together, something could happen for the better.

  3. I'm not usually a complainer, Brian. But when I get irritated to the point that this so-called rating system has gone on and gets worse, I'm going to speak up. I've never had a problem with ratings until the changes that have been inplemented recently, and I'm referring to the photos just since the end of March I've uploaded. The number of ratings has increased, yes, but so has the amount of 3s and 4s. My overall average is high 5s, yes. But if the 3/4 ratings continue, it affects my overall and will bring it down. I guess I'd rather have 9 ratings on a quality image than 20 ratings with an average of 4. This isn't about my low scrores. I know a lot of PN regulars have gone to giving a critique only and no rating anymore. I guess I should do the same.
  4. In my long years on this website, I have never complained about the ratings - until now. I've read countless complaints, arguments, etc. about mate ratings, unfair ratings, etc. Well, add me to the list. I have uploaded several photos for critique in the last couple weeks, and I can't even get a 5 average, when I know my work is of higher caliber than "average". I will no longer be submitting for ratings critique - it will be critique only. Ratings have gotten out of hand and I will tolerate no more.
  5. Scott, I can't stand NAP either. Been there, done that. Have you tried Michigan Photo in Saginaw? I think they're pretty pricey, but I know they emboss. Kalamazoo Color Lab I have also used many times and been very happy, and their prices are reasonable as well. ALso, I've been nothing but impressed with MPIX. You can get name and year put on yourself in PS and then send them the file. Hope this helps!
  6. Just got back from the Florida trip. Didn't make sunrise at St. Marks due to fog and weather, but arrived around midday and got some fantastic bird and gator shots, as well as the lighthouse. I will be sure to get some posted to my portfolio in the next few days!
  7. Josh, thanks for your helpful information on the waterfalls. Since I will have my 7 month old son with me, anything involving hiking is out...if I was solo, no problem! :)

Joe, the bridge and mill near Cullman is EXACTLY what I was looking for...thanks so much for that helpful tidbit!! Since my mom and 88 year old aunt will also be with me, I can't stray too far from the beaten path. That will be a perfect stop. Thanks again!

  8. I am going to be driving home to Michigan from the Florida Panhandle

this weekend. We will be driving north up Interstate 65 through the

entire state. Can anyone recommend any good spots within 10-15 miles

off Highway 65 that could be a worthwhile stop for some landscape

photography? Of particular interest would be waterfalls, covered

bridges, churches, historical buildings, and the like. Thanks!

  9. Laurie, thanks again for the helpful information. Sounds like my kind of place! I'll be sure to check the weather before I leave. Fog and lighthouses...my kind of stuff! :) I'm going to have my six month old son with me in a baby backpack (haha, this is going to be fun!) so I'm not sure if I can get going much earlier than 6am (CST). Looks like I might luck out with low tide too...
  10. Jeff and Laurie, thanks so much for your insight for this location. In regards to the wading birds - what lens were you using (mm) to get decent shots? Were they along the road, or in the marshes near the lighthouse? I'm planning on leaving around 6am so I'm there by 9am or so from Panama City.
  11. Hi! I've got the opportunity to stop at St. Mark's National Wildlife

Refuge on my upcoming Florida trip next week. How's the wildlife

there at this time of year? I'm going to primarily see the

lighthouse, but I love to shoot wildlife as well. I only have about

1/2 day to play with, as time is really tight this trip.

Also, can any of you Florida natives recommend the best route there

from Panama City? Am I better to head north and take the Interstate,

or am I better to take two lane and go north to 20/267 east through

Bristol? I'm planning on taking 98 coastal driving back from St.

Marks to Pamana City on the return to hit the few lighthouses along

    there.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

  12. Gene - not really anything in particular, but I love the 6x6 TLRs and old folders with good glass (doesn't everyone!). I had an Autocord, sold it, and regret it. I also have a pre-merger Ica Dresden (I'm guessing it's even older than 1920) 6x9 box folder that I adore that I picked up for $100 in a local shop here in Michigan. Just depends on what I find. :)

Michael - thanks for the helpful information. I'm not sure we're going to make it downtown NYC since I'm travelling with my two kids (4 years and 6 months) and don't want to take them camera shopping, much less in the big city. I will tuck it away if I can get my aunt to babysit though! :)

Wendell - flea markets are right up my alley. Any recommendations for good (big) ones?

  13. I sometimes link my lighthouse images hosted here on PN to a forum

which I am a member. Since last night, four links I have posted are

really slow to come up, and then I'm getting a red X in place where

the photo should be. As a subscriber, I thought I had access to this

feature. Has something changed, or is there a server error?

  14. Sally, sounds like you have some great suggestions from the Detroit-area members. I live on the other side of Michigan, north of Grand Rapids, so if you end up out this way, feel free to drop me an email! My husband and I had an October wedding and it was definitely the right decision. The fall colors were incredible! Best wishes and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.
