  1. So if I were to take a look at each of your portfolios can I assume the following? I'm guessing here.

Jeremy, you obviously favor a vintage black and white film look. You love straight lines, whether they be vertical (swings) or horizontal (bricks and stones) and regular patterns of lines. I do see some curvy lines in there but what do straight lines say about you?

RL Potts, you love water but not just water- every kind of manifestation of it- its power (waves), its grace (drops on spiderwebs), its mystery (your awesome clouds) and its destruction (waterfalls) and you particularly like things that show a state of decay (especially notable in the frosted flowers, rotting dock footings and mossy forest shots).

Steve, Yours was a little bit tougher. But in almost every shot I see a gentle, curving path whether it be a road, a flash of light, the inlet of a bay, a river, a crevice in the rocks.

Is this what you guys consider consistency of style? Did you intentionally think about these things when you took your shots or is it subconscious? Am I getting too deep?

  2. I have spent a lot of time since joining looking around at various galleries-

especially those whose photos I have rated or critiqued. I have noticed a lot of

comments at the bottom of galleries like "very nice portfolio", "Great work on

your portfolio", etc. What makes a good portfolio- good images or a variety of

types (i.e. landscape, portrait, documentary?), a specific style?

  3. Flickr looks interesting but I wonder if I would get valuable feedback there that I can actually put to work. Good comments are great but they do little to coach a person to work harder. I am not afraid of being criticized- I actually crave that.

PNF- I love your equine photos. What gorgeous animals they are. And the overlays are great. These are very popular in scrapbooking forums- who, interestingly enough, are as obsessive about scrapbooking as photographers are about their work.

  4. Thanks for your replies. I checked out each of your recommendations and they look interesting. I knew of Flickr but thought it was just a organizational and sharing tool for families and friends, didn't realize the Flickr community actually interacted. Fred, I have been critiquing others photos (25 so far) and enjoy doing that- especially when I see something really beautiful or striking. Since I am basically a novice and still learning just the basics of technicality, I am not sure I have much to offer anyone but I enjoy commenting when a photo touches me. I have one more question. How does a photo get 103 views and only one rating?
