1.
Ya they both are very reasonably priced. Thanks everyone, I love my 70-200 which I use to shoot a lot of lacrosse with (most the games last year were at night.) However it is a pretty heavy lens and the difference between a 2.8 and 1.8 is pretty huge so it would be nice to have something a bit lighter and shorter.

 2.
I am wanting to buy a new lens for the winter sports I will be shooting (wrestling, basketball, swimming), currently I have a 70-200 f2.8 but I want something that with a better f-stop for gyms with bad lighting. Between the 85mm 1.8 and the 100mm 2.0 which one do you guys think would be best? I am using a Canon 50D. Thanks!

 3.
I thought the same thing so I switched to a blog site and I LOVE it! It always has my recent work, and the search engines find it quickley. Plus if you know a little html or css you are not limited to what you can do with it. Check out tofurious.com and I second http://www.prophotoblogs.com/. I use tofurious, however I have seen some from prophotoblogs and they are great. Here is a link to my site if you would like to take a look here

 4.
Thank you! Very good info here! Reason why it makes me sick, no not that those are the people taking my clients because honestly if they are ok with someone who just opened their camera box coming to shoot their wedding, their expectations cannot be that high. I want people to have high expectations of me and I want to meet those expectations. Maybe that is what I enjoy about becoming a professional, there are challenges and I am not one to easily admit defeat :) It makes me sick because it is sad to me that such an amazing profession is being tainted with people that dont know what they are doing. It is like having an 18 year old in his first year of college preform brain sugery. Slightly extreme example I know, however people should take it more seriously and they don't.
I think another thing I have been working on is making my "vision" better when I go shoot. It is like you said, how many images can you have of a bowl of fruit, well only one if someone can take that image and make it into a work of art that no one else can replicate instead of a snapshot! I have been working to furthur my creative eye, and a lot of what I have found to help is finding artists I like and studying their work. Looking in magazines, books, online, etc. If there is one thing I will actually miss about college it is learning, and furthuring my knowledge. I would love to be able to afford to go to a workshop (preferrably with some of the artists who's work I love, because I would love to just pick their brain all day!) I will need to put that into my budget in years to come!
1) How many people know you are a photographer? I listened to a very interesting tutorial a few months back about how the most important steps to take is to be know by everyone in your zipcode that you are a photographer. SO these past few months, I have been telling everyone I know. And I am getting better about telling people I dont know, but that is still a work in progress :)
2) Do you contact and re-contact your prior clients and ask for referrals? Yes, and no. I need to be better about this as well.
3) Do you know how to ask for a referral? Yes, I have had a few sittings from this.
4) How many people each day do you contact to solicit business? This week I think 4-5 a day. But most have been in form of email, which I think phone is a way better method..... from what I am finding out....
5) How much time are you devoting each day to reach your goal? Thinking about it doesn't count. ;) I wish I could be putting 24 hours in! Haha dang sleep and work! Probably at least 3 a day, which I would really like to increase, I just need more hours in a day.
6) Are you a member of any groups..organizations etc? (Networking) Facebook, Twitter, a forum called clickinmoms, I would like to join PPA or WPPA eventually.

It is a lot of hard work! But so far.... worth it. I cannot imagine not having a camera in front of my face, or never again hearing the joy in a clients voice when they recieve their images. While the payoff right now is not much, it is 110% worth it! Now, I would love to read that article if you still have it! And what are some other good authors out there!? I LOVE Steve Sint, one of my favorite books so far! His stories are priceless. Another person that I 1. love her work and 2. read through an interview about how she got started is Jasmine Star. She is amazing.

 5.
Thank you for you suggestions! I have read some of dan hellers site, I also have read Steve Sint's book which talked a little bit about marketing, and I am looking for more that go more in depth. I also have been watching some Lynda tutorials about photography and marketing which have been very interesting!
I have been doing portrait and sports work for the past few years, so I actually have heard the 80/20 rule from a lot of people. When I started out doing photography my expectiations really were set that it is a business, the creative side is not necessarily what is making you money. The main reason I stated that I have been trying to get prepared this past year is based on where my market currently is (Utah). There are SO many people that just have a camera and therefore believe they are photographers and can go charge money and shoot weddings. It makes me sick. Especially after having a client tell me they had to have a reshoot because their photographer messed up so badley! Therefore I really have wanted to place myself at the point that I am very set apart from those kind of people. This essentially is what I want to be my career, and while I still have a ways to go to get to that point, I fully understand and respect that you have one chance to do a wedding. So you better nail it every time!
I am trying to get better with word of mouth, especially in a place filled with young college students and a plethera of weddings every weekend. Are there any books you suggest? I am all about investing in photography books and the way I see it the more the better! The hardest thing that I have found so far is how many ways you can go about marketing, and you really have to find what works for your market. What about bridal fairs..... I have heard mixed reviews. Some say its a battle between photographers and who will go the lowest with their pricing, others say it is definatley worth it. Opinions? Thanks!

 6.
So I have decided to move forward and start really marketing myself to do weddings. This past year I have done lots of research, read books, articles, magazines on wedding photography business, shooting styles, dos and donts etc, and I have practiced, practiced, practiced to get myself to the point that I really understand my camera and equipment.
I have two wedding booked for this fall so far that happened from word of mouth, I am so excited to shoot weddings I can hardly stand it and am trying everything I can think of to get my name out there to start booking more. I have put cards in jewlery store, contacted some vendors to start doing some networking, and joined every free wedding photography listing I can find online. Once I shoot my wedding in August I think I am going to get a site up just for my wedding photography and separate it from the other portrait work I do.
What else can I do to get going!? Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

 7.
There is a book by Martin Evening called "Adobe Photoshop CS3 for photographers". He has an entire section in there about retouching, softening, sharpening, masks, etc. It is a really good book especially if you are not familiar with photoshop because it basically walks you through every step and covers everything from the basics of photoshop to layers, selections, masking, color output, etc.

 8.
High school boys lacrosse, I am so sad the season is over soon :( White was the Utah State Champs last year, red won the game.
9.
Thanks you guys, so Amanda you have not had any problems with bludomain then? I have a website but a lot of it is html and I am having some problems with how fast it is loading. That is one of the reasons I am looking into a possible flash based site. With bludomain is it just the one time fee for the site and then $100 if you host it elsewhere? Do you have to pay that $100 hosting fee every year or is it a one time fee as well? Thanks!

 10.
I am contemplating possibly switching my website to a flash site and I am looking into photobiz. They have some nice templates and are pretty inexpensive. I am curious have any of you used them and what did you think? I love some of the templates on bludomain.com but to be completley honest I have heard absolutley terrible reviews about them and the occasional good review. I think all of the bad reviews really turn me away from that company so I need some other options.

 11.
yes I can decrease the file size and that would probably help, I also have thought about maybe taking down a few images so there are not so many in each category. Also sorry about the contact section! I actually didnt even realize there were problems until last night. I will get that fixed!

 12.
I was not sure where to post this so sorry if it is in the wrong place! I am curious how quickly my site loads on other people's computers... I think I need to find a way to speed it up a little bit still but I am still learning web design so it is a work in progress. Also what do you think of my site and is it worth doing more in flash (or paying for a flash template?) I seem to get so frustrated with sites that are completley done in flash. Let me know, I am looking for suggestions, and possible improvements to make. It seems that in my sports and portrait galleries they are loading a bit slow... Thanks in advance! (Also I am in the process of updating a lot of my work, so there are quite a few images that will be changing).
