    Also wondering... Why don't you like the f/11 100 combo? What would be optimal to you?</p>

    Robert - I would probably like to overpower the lighting in the warehouse - it's not very pretty. As for outdoor light coming in - there really isn't any right now - we would have to open a garage door for that and it's been about -15 degrees out here! :( May be a different story in the summer - I could use some outdoor light.<br>

    As for backgrounds - this will be my first dabble into using a background/lights. I do primarily outdoor on location stuff so far - and am still in practice mode. I am planning on buying a couple muslin backgrounds - probably white and a dark grey textured one and possibly a bold color (I'm thinking green with our uniforms) to be fun. For white would i want it lit? what are the advantages to lighting your background?</p>

    I've been searching other questions and postings to find my answer and I'm still not sure about how much power I'll need. I am going to be shooting team pictures (I coach at this program, so I'll be doing it each year) in a warehouse type building. It's something like 20,000 sq feet and has 25 foot ceilings or near that. The groups will be anywhere from an individual to 40 people in a team group.<br>

    I'm mainly looking at the Alien Bees kits... and thinking of starting with two AB1600s. Is this too little, too much etc? I don't want to buy twice and I want to be able to get good shots so that I get a good word of mouth around town as I'm slowly starting a portrait business as well as taking my team's pictures.<br>

    I shoot with a Canon 50d - 17-55 f/2.8.<br>

    Also, suggestions about accesories would be help full... shoot through versus reflective and anything else I may need to know.<br>

  4. <p >I Need help figuring out a good business name (with URL available)… I am just starting out and will be doing portrait photography of seniors, kids, families, etc… as well as doing action shots at events for my teams. I am an All Star Cheer coach and that’s where I will be starting with a base of clients. There are about 130 families in our cheer program and I’ve been “borrowing” groups and individuals to build my portfolio and feel that I’ll continue to get their business when I start up. I will also be doing some larger event photography for the Cheer Competitions that we host. </p>

    <p >Because of this “family” that I’m a part of, I wanted to do something along the lines of AllStarPhotography (taken), CapturingCheerPhotography, or AllStarCheertography (is this too limiting?)… I also thought about a 3-word combo like “LifeLoveCheerPhotography” (too nerdy?), MomentsOfCheerPhotography (longgg)… etc. My main question/concern here is does the word “cheer” double easily enough as happiness/joy/etc as well as cheerleading like my main base will see it?</p>

    <p >I thought about using my name but a lot of the good options with my first name are gone (PhotosByAli, AliPhotography, AlisPhotography, AliciasPhotography)… as for first and last name combos my initials are taken, and I don’t want to use Bleckinger (I’m not engaged yet but on that path) and change it after working to get my name out there. And I don’t plan on dealing with the awkwardness of trying to use a name I haven’t been asked to use. Probably not great in the relationships 101 book. However, if things continue as planned my new last initial will be S… so I was trying to do some kind of AliS (which for now I could say Ali’s… and later in life could morph to Ali S. without changing my URL…thought this was a sneaky way of planning ahead?)</p>

I just ordered two books about photoshop that should help my cause… and after posting my pictures on facebook (I have an embarrassingly large teen network due to my cheer coaching – which will be great if I can get my skills up to par and be able to charge… (baby steps)) I have a bunch of shoots on the horizon to practice and continue building a portfolio up. Anyone have any suggestions on MUST HAVE books for beginners… lighting, business end of photography, etc?</p>

    <p >Nathan – I had a TON of trouble with sunlight… but that day fit best for our schedules. So my question is what do you do if you have a shoot scheduled and it’s super bright out? Find shade? (is this a silly question?) Do you limit where you take your shots to where the sun isn’t hitting or use a certain time of day for outdoor stuff? Also, with reflectors – is this something that can be done without an additional person there to help? I will dig into more forums about this as well to find out more.</p>

    <p >Michael – I’m not even sure I know what all of those rules pertain to. I will be looking those up next. But I hear what you’re saying about compositional choices. I was wondering (after getting the pictures home and seeing them on a sizable screen) if the brick wall shots could’ve looked better had I moved the gals away from the wall and blurred it out. (probably something I can learn from my photoshop book and do after… though easier with the camera) But then when I gave all the shots to the girls – and they picked the ones they liked the most to put up on their facebook pages (my personal litmus test)… they put those ones up. So then my question is, who are you marketing to in the end… the teen or the parent? (my mom hated most of what I liked when I had mine done… and she didn’t like the brick wall shots either when I showed her these.)</p>

  7. Hey all,

     

    I recently bought a new lense - 17-55mm f/2.8 IS - I rented it last year for cheerleading nationals in Florida - and I got

    some great shots I was really happy with. So I saved and bought it.. and now I'm just getting into a new cheer

    season and I'm tackling high school gyms and their lighting. I thought the open aperature would be the end of my

    problems... but I seem to be getting out of focus shots. Anything from the image below that you can comment on or

    help me fix? Am I too far away or is my ISO not right? I have a competition this Saturday and would like to get

    better results this time. Thanks!

  8. Ok, for focal length I sit right in front of a 54foot across and 42foot deep mat to take competiiton pics. At any given time I might want a shot of someone in front of me two feet - or the action that is taking place 40 feet back on the mat. But I also want a wide angle of view b/c when they build their stunts they can take up 42 feet across and I love full group shots... all this with low lighting. So I should go with a wide angle that has a wider aperature... specific suggestions that would fit my canon now?
  9. Yes I was shooting in burst mode, and maybe I'm doing something wrong... but when I'm in manual I generally can't get my camera below an f4. I have the ISO the highest it will go (I think that's 1600 on my camera but it's not at home at the moment) I thought this was due to lighting. That's why the idea of a fixed fstop was rather enticing. No?

     

    And while we're on the subject, you guys mentioned another body... which is the best camera for this type of photography in your opinion. I may be in a place in the next year or so to double up and have a primary/secondary at these events... and I wouldn't be opposed to my rebel becoming my secondary if there's a more suitable model out there.

     

    I don't plan to sell the images, but we do use them for advertising as well as our website. So the better I get, the better it will look for the professionalism of this business.

  10. Hey all,

     

    I recently started taking pictures for my all star cheerleading team's

    website. I shoot with a Canon Rebel XT and I have the lense that came with

    it. I have been looking into the 50mm f/1.4 and I'm wondering if anyone has

    insight on that particular lense. I shoot in high school gyms, indoor venues

    at Disney (think ESPN cheerleading if you've ever seen it) and our gymnastics

    gym in which we can only turn on half of the lights. So low light is sometimes

    an issue, and I often catch the "moment" I was looking for, but it's a fuzzy

    mess.

     

    Please help!
