Things are "slowly" getting better. YES, i think not being used to the IS being in the camera body, and not having high end lenses with IS has been an issue. Also, one thing ive noticed about the canon, in paying attention to what im seeing in the viewfinder after the focus beeps, is that even after the camera thinks it has focused, if i look closely, the face may not be in focus. This happens usually when the subject/person is 20 feet away or more. I place a focus dot on face, preferably eye. I read somewhere that sometimes canons have problems with finding good contrast. so in shots where subject is somewhat far away, choosing a focus dot on the eye..but being so far away, placing a big ol focus dot on a teeny eye...not working. So now im placing focus at hairline, or something bigger. Helps a "bit".
Also, i think using low end lenses is an issue definately.
Those of you telling me to use center focus dot always, okay, what if say, i have a woman, leaning against a wall, i want her and the wall to be in the right side of the frame only. Can i seriously use center focus dot, and then recompose to the middle of the pic , and she will still be in focus? I have tried that a few times, but, if it is a "side" composition as the above, im not finding that it is working well.."all the time".
The last 2 photo shoots ive done, were better, still using both cameras, but the last one, it was 75 percent of the "canon" photos that i posted for the client.
This pic is at a very high ISO, 1/320, f2.8 with my cheapie 50mm 1.8, i believe focus dot was on left eye. Not the most "crisp" pic, but with that high of an iso, i would epect that. Again though, focus dot on eye, works for me when subject is close, and NOT moving. I do have better luck with non moving subjects. Ive also found that shutter speed should be LOTS higher that what i would use on my Oly, probably because of the no "in body" IS

thanks everyone, i have tried most of these suggestions, with all 3 of my lenses. It was said to me that there were some prior focusing issues in the 50d that the new firmware would resolve, so downloaded that, not much of a difference.

I refuse to believe it is the camera or all 3 lenses. I did not know that Olympus's were more forgiving for a fact, but that is what ive been telling everyone, because its obvious.

Yesterday i did 3 seperate test shoots with my kiddo, one in each mode, (ie, oneshot, aiservo alfocus) and they were still and moving shots of her dancing around. Believe it or not, i got the most "usable " shots from using the alfocus mode, but only about 60 percent. Her still close ups were fine, SOME of the pics i took of her moving around, with the 50mm (she is approximately 20 feet away) at a very high shutter speed at f10 were blurry, some werent, seems to be a hit or miss. I DO select focus points when ap is at say, f2, f5, try to use center focus point when ap is at f10 or more, just nothing seems consistent. Was hoping this would be resolved before the wedding this weekend...grrrr. Im very appreciative of your help!

yes i do believe its operator error, lol.....guess i just thought this camera was not going to be much harder to learn than my olympus. ive done 4 engagement shoots, each shoot ive taken both cameras because of my lack of what the heck to do on the canon, shot each of the poses with BOTH cameras, ended up using all the Oly pics, they turned out great. I appreciate the help, ill post some more examples when i get home, im really distraught, so hopefully i can get this figured out. Oh and Tommy, my understanding of DOF is somewhat limited. its like high school algebra sometimes. My frustration comes from not having any of these problems on the other camera , lol....god help me

okay, i believe this. and i know the concept. that set of photos i had the cam in continuous mode, shot 5 of these, one was in focus, somewhat. when photographing couples standing together, ive also shot at say, f10, with bad results also. trying to find an example

oh and this is happening with all lenses by the way. i do realize that Rob, how come everytime i post on here, someone has a smyde or sarcastic remark? goodness gracious?

sorry, its a dslr olympus

i meant to say, i have tried taking pics well above 1/ 80th..ive never had these probs on my olympus, i can take indoor photos at 1/30th with a steady hand and the photos come out fine, anyway here is one example

have a new canon 50d, using a 50mm 1.8, shutter speed above 1/80, if not much more than that. aps have tried between1.8 and even at f10, center weighted metering, one photo, BLURRY all the time! well, got a few good ones in al servo. pill bottles, signs, cups, all come out great, people....FORGET IT...im at wits end here, any suggestions? ive tried all modes, all focusing points, recomposing.....only seem to get a "few" good people pics WITH flash, even though exposure is RIGHT ON, still blurry unless using flash, makes no sense.

I am using my oly e510, with a promaster5750DX flash. I am trying to use second curtain, why does the flash fire twice, once at the beginning, and once at the end of the exposure? I dont see how this could benifit me at weddings as wont both flashes cause confusion of the subject in focus? I would think it would cause a blending of maybe 2 different facial expressions.
Any advice would be appreciated.

well i see on the menu my choices of shq, raw hq, etc. there is also a tab on the menu called SQ,

-

can anyone give me the skinny on this? i have a e510, always shoot on shq or raw. what should the pixel count and compression be? (i see this under menu/SQ) I have read some posts on it, but its a little vague, and it takes me a while to get things, lol..thanks

I just started photographing weddings this year. Ive been using my e510, kit lenses, and occasionally rent some lenses. I take a lot of heat and ridicule from photographers from other forums and photographer friends for using an Oly at weddings, like they are substandard. I also take crap for relying mainly on my kit lenses. Man, I wish i could remember the guys name, but there is a famous fashion photographer who uses nothing but his oly and his kit lenses. Anyway, my wedding images are at:

I love my oly!!

Hello, i normally use my e510, which has raw, shq, etc. I rented this e520 for the weekend, and i see raw, but not
shq, etc, i see raw, LF, LM, LN. I dont have the manual for the e520, can any one decipher this for me

thought i already posted this, but ill try again,
thanks to everyone, great ideas, sounds like i have to do some more reading, especially the link info you gave me. My next wedding is in October, hired by a pro photographer because she doesnt like doing family weddings, so the pressure is on.

Jamie, you know, i asked my camera guy at the store for a mini soft box for my flash (to reduce shadows), he talked me out of it saying the mini-bouncer is what i needed, i reluctantly agreed to buy what he suggested, but thank you for confirming what i already knew, i really needed the soft box!! lol

Thanks everyone, makes sense. I do have an assistant, she uses my back up cam which is also an oly. I REALLY
like the idea given about having the assistant sweep some light across the back of the church , thank you. I do
actually have a bracket for flash that I use.
Unfortunately, I am stuck with my oly for a little while, but from what ive read on this post, i do need to upgrade my
flash unit, right now i use it with a stoffen, and my lumiquest, your all right, i just need more flash power, big time.
I am still nervous about ISO settings.
NADINE, yes i tried the drag shutter thing on this pic, but i also had an idea for draggin, i wanted to photograph the
dancing at the reception, with the newlyweds in the middle of the huddle, and just "freeze" them, i tried this using
2cd curtain flash, didnt get very good results.
I usually visit the location of the ceremony a week before, at the same time the ceremony would begin and take test
photos of everything, i have my assistant wear white and have her walk down the isle and stand up on the alter, this
helps a little, but as someone said, one thing doesnt work all the time.
CAN ANYONE SUGGEST a camera that is an upgrade compared to my oly, but not thousands of dollars? Im a
single mom on a budget here, lol
-
Okay thank you, that makes sense. I have a lumiquest midibouncer that my camera store guy told me would be useful, but I have not found it useful for anything that is not closer up. Can you give me the stats on the flash unit you use? Maybe mine is just not up to par.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for the battery info, whew, that will be a huge help.

I would love to use the "drag the shutter" technique for receptions, I have tried it a few times. Do you think this is something that will work for me with time and experience? because i have tried it a few times during the receptions

Yes im using flash, which is another issue, like i said i dont try to bounce if the ceiling is dark, is that appropriate? and do too high ceilings make the bounce action moot? Another thing I am noticing, is the flash (too quickly) loosing battery power and takes forever to charge back up, anyone suggest some real good batteries?

Hey Greg, whats up? I saw your posts on the other forum, no i didnt run back to leave a response, i had 3 surgeries in less than a month, and my daughter had liberty before being sent to Afganistan. Sorry if you feel like im asking the same questions over and over, im not really, i am following as best as i can what ive read and studied, i just feel its trial and error, the more i do it, the more experienced ill get, every wedding photographer has to start somewhere...right? I am just trying to fine tune at the moment, k?
switched from oly to canon 50d ALL photos of people blurry
