I know I am trying to make myself feel better here, but I checked KEH. The same lens as BGN will have blemishes and marks on glass and is $299 EXC is $399 and says "may have blemishes and marks on glass So I probably paid way below what KEH would sell it for since its only 3 years old. But I am still annoyed
-
I purchased a Nikon 28mm 2.8 AIs MF lens from a seller on amazon. He purchased the lens new from BH in 2013 and included the receipt. He paid 499 plus tax. The buy it now was 299 so I thought it was a good deal for a 3 year old LN lens. Unpacked it day and it looks great, then when I examine the rear element through a flashlight I notice a small spot. Gently run my finger over it and I can feel it. I tried to clean it, doesn't rub off. Looks like a scratch. Although its not a line, more of an oval type shape. Maybe he dropped it, who knows. Anyway I'm furious. Should I return it? Or would that spot not show up on images? Its not in the center of the glass, its very close to the perimeter. Its hard to see looking straight through, have to angle the lens so the light catches it. wish I could photo it.

Im so used to the FM2N where simply cocking the winder activates the meter lol
-
Brian I read his comments incorrectly now. The way he worded it made me think one had to fire off a few frames in order to get the meter to work. I understand what he meant now :)

*** Update**** I brought the camera in today to Nippon in NYC for a CLA. I didn't really fool around with it. However, I just was told by the seller that "you have to advance the film a few frames to activate the meter" I assumed the meter was working on such a pristine camera. I never heard of having to advance the film a few frames to activate it. I usually use a handheld LM for my work. Does this sound like a bad meter? I called Nippon and asked them to inspect the meter. Jeez this is annoying
-
I wonder is one can damage the camera by using it with the lube dried out. Kind of like running a car with no oil.
-
I'll prob bring it to Nippon Repair in NYC. They generally do the full CLA though. They won't just do the seals. Probably needs lubricating and seals as your said.

I just scored a Nikon F3HP on eBay for $300. It looks brand new! The guy I bought it from was the original owner who purchased it in 1984 new> he said he ran only 4 or 5 rolls of film through it. The question I have is, should I CLA this camera or just use it for now. Thanks

My Fuji X100s is Not Working. Do I need Service?
jon_kobeck1 replied to jon_kobeck1's topic in Mirrorless Digital Cameras
I have been looking for the card all day. I can't find it. -
I have a Fuji X100s only 3 months old. All of a sudden I get a pur white screen on the display back when I try to focus or shoot. I also get a red AF! on the eye sensor. I tried resetting it to factory specs but that didn't work. Changed the battery and same problem. I ordered it from Adaroma. Does this sound like a service issue and where does one go for service? I am in NY Thanks!

I have a 2009 MacBook that I wanted to start using for Lightroom ad some Photoshop. It is the iconic white plastic unibody model. 2.2 GHz with 4 GB of Ram and OS X I realize its old and slowish. I like it though. Maybe its because its the last of the white plastic models. I was thinking about putting in an SSD since they are so cheap now, to speed things up. I happen to be looking at the MacBook Air and it looks like the specs are slower then m older MacBook. Intel Core i5 - 4GB Memory - 128GB Flash Storage Any thoughts? Can I edit photos on the oder MacBook? Perhaps put in an SSD or a larger HD with an external drive? Or spend 1K on an Air?

I seem to have fixed it, but here is what I don't understand; When I tried to open the LR catalog with all my files, it said the catalog was empty. The Catalog was stored in the Pictures folder on the HD. When I dragged the LR Catalog to the desktop and then opened it from THAT location it opened with all the missing files. I don't understand why I had to move the LR Catalog (NOT the ASSOCIATED FILES IN THE CATALOG, just the program) to the desktop for it to read all the files. The actual files (10K images) are stored in the Photos file on the HD. I want to move the LR catalog off the desktop but I'm worried I will mess things up again
-
I accidentally moved my catalog files in my iMac HD and could not open them in LR. So I attempted to restore everything with my Time Machine Backup. However, in the restoration I restored the actual Lightroom Catalog Master file. Now its gone. When I open LR I get a blank catalog with none of my settings. the Master file seems to have vanished. How can I retrieve this?

Lightroom 5.4
jon_kobeck1 replied to jon_kobeck1's topic in The Digital Darkroom: Process, Technique & Printing
The only solution I could find was to restore the files from the Time Machine backup, which is happening right now. I am restoring to this mornings back-up before I accidentally moved everything around. My only concern now is, will the LR adjustments, metadata, etc all be preserved? The restoration will be complete in about 2 hours. I hope all my edits are still there -
Lightroom 5.4

Andrew, the new iMacs have this "smart HD" that automatically moves files between the SSD and HD depending upon how often you open them. What I don't understand is, why isn't LR moving the files from my temporary folder on my desktop to the LR catalog. I assume I can go into LR and move the folders myself. -

Catalog Screenshot 2 -
I need some serious help here. I am not new to Lightroom, but for some reason, when I changed computers and upgraded to LR 5.4 my catalog got messed up big time. The new iMac had a combined SSD and HD so the storage folders are a little different. Apparently the hard-drive moves files back and forth between the SSD and HD depending upon how often you open them. The files you open often get allocated to the SSD for speed. So with the upgrade, many of my files are now missing. Also, when add images from a memory card to a temporary folder on my desktop, then import those images to LR, I am noticing LR leaves the master files on my desktop. In the past, LR would move those files to the master collection for storage so I can delete the temporary files from my desktop. Now if I delete the temporary desktop folder the files are gone from the LR catalog. I like to use a temp "holding" folder on the desktop to import the images. I am attaching some screenshots. Maybe someone here knows what the problem is. I need to get the catalog cleaned up and organized. Thanks!

I know this is probably not a fair comparison. I really don't mean to compare the two at all. But rather I am looking for some opinions, especially from former film shooter. I have been working almost exclusively with the Hasselglad 501C and Kodak Portra 400NC. I recently began shooting the same type of portraits with the Fuji X100s. Shooting handheld at F8 indoors, setting the shutter to 1/125 slowest allowable speed and Auto ISO to 3200, RAW and Fine JPG. I notice that I am seeing more "noise" in the skin tones then I did with the Hasselblad. I also notice the fuji tends to stay at the max ISO most times, even when going to F5.4 or lower. I'm still getting to know this little camera. Is it unfair of me to expect the same results I got with MF film? Or perhaps I should be using a much lower ISO and go back to working on a tripod? One of the reasons I am trying to make this work is so I can avoid the tripod. I will try to post samples when I can. You can view my film portraits at www.johnkobeck.com thanks

Recommendations on a Cheap CamCorder for Lo-Fi Black and White Videos
jon_kobeck1 replied to jon_kobeck1's topic in Video
Michael I am not really sure. I have an idea of combining video with photography in a project I am working. I am not knowledgeable in the least about video though. I just know what I like, and the "look" I am after. But with that said, I would rather not have to transfer from VHS to digital (if I don't have to). Is there a way to achieve that effect and look with digital capture? Perhaps older low-res digital? -
Best SMALL Mirrorless for Serious Portraiture Etc
jon_kobeck1 replied to jon_kobeck1's topic in Mirrorless Digital Cameras
The Xe1 is cheap! I had that same kit zoom on my X-Pro and I think I sold it for 450.00 Was a good lens. If I did go the Xe1 route I may get the external viewfinder
