Sorry about the grammar, Steve!

And thanks for the link, Ben. That site says that if my gross income is less than a grand a year, I don't need to charge sales tax. I don't anticipate making much more than that, but it would be close. Also, I wish it had a section about online sales.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I'll keep doing some research.

So I'm putting together this photo magazine of people looking at nature.
I want to sell the magazines for about 10 bucks a pop. At the absolute most, I would bring in $1000 from this project.
Do I need to charge any taxes? I'm based out of Colorado.
Thank you, I always appreciate your help.

Thanks everyone, I just posted a want ad on CL and got a seller who gave me his D700 with 17000 actuations for a paltry $1900.

Couldn't be happier. Thanks everyone.

Being a relative newcomer to photography (a little under a decade), I'm looking for a bit of advice on timing.

I want to buy a used d700 at the best price possible (good condition, reasonable shutter count, etc). I figure with the d800 release in the near future, photogs might be selling their d700's to get the new model.

Is this a reasonable assumption? If so, could I gather some opinions from the more veteran members of the photo community on the best time to buy an old-model camera during the release of a new-model? Is it right after the release? A month? Longer?

Thank you in advance,

Thanks for the answers so far.
A couple thoughts:
George: I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying. Could you rephrase?
Starvy: There's no need to publish the photo in this case. However, I would like to publish it, along with a brief explanation to show what happened. The project is about youth, parties, trying to find people who This project has more roots in photojournalism than in fine art. I hope that that clarifies my desire to post the photo.
John: Thanks for the information. You are absolutely right about this being more of a legal question than a photography one. Are you aware of any resources available (short of reading libraries of legal documents) that give spell out some of the offenses you mentioned relating to documenting?
Dave: Same as John.
Damon: I don't live in singapore, but i don't think there would be much debate about what's going on in the photo.
I guess my real pondering is this: is it a crime to witness something illegal and not report it?
Thanks,

I've recently been taking pictures of young people at parties. I hope that you all can bear with me as I speak frankly about the culture that surrounds the young party scene. Thanks in advance for the advice.
Recently, I was approached by a guy who had been drinking moderately, probably about 20 years old. We started talking about cameras and he suddenly asked me, "hey, do you want to take pictures of my weed?" He pulled out a large nug of marijuana. I said "sure," and now I have some photos of his hands and the nug.
A couple questions:
- In this situation, do I have any reason to worry about having the police come knocking if I publish the photos? (FWIW: I couldn't pick the guy out of a police line-up if my life depended on it). What if I had pictures of his face?
- In every situation, how does alcohol consumption affect consent? If it's a minor?

I appreciate the insights,

so, I just got my batch of 4x5 back from my lab. I don't shoot much 4x5 and I can't figure out why I've got blue patches on the corners of my images--probably about half of them

The film I used was portra 160 nc. I don't think that there's any way that I would have fogged them.

Is this a problem with my camera (this camera hadn't been used for a while, so no one had tested it) or did my lab screw up (sheets touching in the chemicals or something)?

-

Thanks everyone,

I'll find something for her, I'm sure. I'll be hitting up pawn shops this week. Thanks for the film suggestion, Ian.

I'm going to be away from internet for a week, so I'll respond to future comments when I get back. Thanks ahead of time though.

You're all wonderful.

I was recently talking to my ladyfriend (not quite girlfriend), about photography. She said she'd get back into it if she had a nice camera. I shoot nikon, so I figured that I'd get her a nice SLR and some film for christmas.
I have a Nikkormat FT2, I like it, I think she would too. looks like I could get another on ebay for about 50 bucks. That is a good price range for me.
What are some other models that she might enjoy? Nothing too dumbed down, still high quality--gets the job done, you know? I'd like to stick with nikon so that we can share lenses. I can figure out some lenses.
While we're on the topic, does anyone have any favorite film stocks? I'll get her some normal quality rolls as well as a couple of high quality for when she gets more comfortable with the equipment.

Thanks so much everyone,
Thanks for the help everyone, putting the cam on a tripod helped :)

I'm shooting on a d80. When I use my old manual focus 105mm f/2.5 I've noticed that the in-focus indicator tends to
blink erratically, the pictures look fine though.
Does anyone know what causes this, or what the blinks mean.
Thanks,
~Jeff

thank you everyone.
How much should I expect to spend on this lens? It's hard to separate the searches online from the more current versions, but it looks like the going price might hover around 400? does that sound right?
Thanks,
~Jeff

Thanks John,
I shoot with a D80 now, but the lens definitely needs to FX since I will upgrade within the next 2 years.
I will be using the lens mostly for event photography and portraiture.
Thanks,

I'm in the research phase of a quest to buy a good telephoto lens. As a nikon photographer, I enjoy purchasing old glass
to save money.
I know next to nothing about any lens longer than 50mm, so I'm looking for suggestions for high quality lenses between
80ish and 200ish mm. Obviously, faster is better and size isn't really an issue for me. Since I shoot with a d80, I have to
manual meter with older lenses and that's not a problem for me--however, autofocus would be a big plus for me (my
eyes are kind of bad).
Both zooms and primes are fine by me, but I'm a little more partial to primes.
So, it would be great if would let me know about any mid range telephoto optics that you enjoy using.
thank you,
~Jeff

I shoot with a d80 and two older lenses. I have a non-AI 50mm f/1.4 that someone else converted. I have never had problems with CA whatsoever. This 50mm does have some issues with a lack of contrast, but I think that that is more of a lens weakness and less of an AI conversion worry.
hope that helps,

I've been pleased with lr2 so far. tools like the adjustment brush, graduated filter, and the negetive clarity make it well worth my money. However, it seems to run a bit slower than it's predecessor--I should probably buy another gig of ram.

I'd definitely recommend using old lenses. I shoot with a d80 and I've had wonderful sucess with the three old lenses that I own. I shoot with a pre-AI (converted) 50mm f/1.4, a 28mm f/2 AIS and an old nikkor type C 500mm cat lens (this is just a dorky lens that I'm trying to get rid of though).
I've gotten all these guys for way less than what they're worth. The biggest drawback the manual focus and metering.
One thing to note, I'm pretty sure that the manual focus distances will be a bit off for digital cameras. I've always just had to eyeball it (which is impossible at 1.4). I've also noticed that you should never focus to infinity with the old MF lenses (at least with the 3 lenses I have), instead, focus ever so slightly before infinity.
Hope that helps.

With a possible side job in real estate photography looming in my future, I want to be able to create the 3D views
that are often seen on real-estate websites. While I hate these little applets as much as the next photographer, it
seems that the buyers like them and that it's just the general style of online real-estate at the moment.
I was looking for software to stitch the photos for me. Looking on a well known download site, I struggled to find 3D
stitching tools under $200 US. Does anyone know of a cheap or free tool that will stitch panoramic photos and
output them in either java or flash format?
for what it's worth, I'm going to be shooting these images at 10mm on a dslr.
Thanks in advance,
~Jeff

Update: I received an email back from John White. He says that the lens can be mounted without conversion.
thanks everyone.

Thanks Douglas and others. I sent mr. White an email, hopefully he will reply soon.

I shoot with a d80 (in addition to my FT2). I'm buying the old 500mm f/8 cat lens
from someone. I was prepared to either pay for the AI modification to be made, or
to do it myself so that I could use the lens on my digicam.
However, if my memory serves me, the conflict with pre AI lenses has to do with
the aperture prong. When I was trying it out today, I noticed that the lens is a
fixed f/8 and thus has no aperture ring/prong. Do I need to convert this lens before
using it on a d80, or not?
Thanks,
~Jeff

Thanks Jose.
It looks like I'll have a pretty hard time finding one based on your description. I thought b&H had one, but based on your description, I think it was the AI. I told ebay to send me an email if one becomes available.
Thank you.

Wow, thanks for the responses everyone. I'm not used to such fast replies (I'm new here).
To clarify, I am shooting on a cropped sensor (1.6). And I am willing to look at focal lengths up to 30mm (maybe 35mm, even though that's really a "standard" lens for cropped sensors). I am considering FF lenses though, because I plan on transitioning to a D3 within the next 4 years.
Jim Momary: How can you distinguish the close focussing version of the 28mm from others of the same FL when searching online? I would really like a close focussing lens and it sounds very high quality from your discription. Thanks.
Ilkka Nissila: I would be interested in seeing some shots from the 28mm. Is there any reason why I couldn't use this lens on my aps-c sensor? You mention "digital issues"...
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the responses.

Hi,
I've been looking to buy a fast wide angle prime for a while now. It seems that
every review I read is pretty mediocre for the following:
sigma 30mm 1.8
Nikon 28 2.8
Nikon 24 2.8
Sigma 20 1.8
I would love suggestions for really sharp lenses that I can shoot wide open with.
I am looking to spend no more than 400 US
Thank you for the help.

Thank you Caron, I appreciate the detailed response.
I have a friend who has her own business and she recommended the seminars to me as well. It looks like that might be the next step forward.
