I have the IS and although its a good deal and the reviews appear to overrate this lens there
are issues with it. The poor build increases lens flare and the hood is useless. I seem to get
lens flare all the time with the lens whereas I don't with my 70-200L f/4 or my 50 f/1.4 in
the same light.

adorama have 2 in the shop, don't show on the website as web-site shows wharehouse inventory, I was there yesterday and asked....
-
the 50mmf/1.8 is a no brainer at $70, and on your 1.6 x sensor is ok for portraits indoors in low light in restuarants etc.
-
The reviews for the 70-200 f/4 L with the 1.4 teleconverter are very good on photozone.de, on a 40d it gives you 448mm for around $850, but you loose some apperture with the teleconverter. Can anyone find a more cost effective answer?
-
IMO if you have some wide prime lens with wide apperture then you don't really have to have a 2.8 zoom lens which are expensive and heavy.
To get really wide zoom on a crop sensor then the Canon EFS 10-22mm is really the only option which I think has an apertaure of 3.5-5.6.

Fixed the problem, forgot to turn IS of the old lens before removing an attaching the new
lens. Correcting this solved it. Thanks

Thanks, its not new I just bought it used. Not sure of my next course of action. I could
return it to the guy I bought if from.

Err 01 Communications btwn camera and lens is faulty. clean the lens contacts
I get this error with my 70-200 f/4 L on my virtually new 40D. Any experience of this. Not had this
before. I just wiped the contact points with my lens cloth, still no progress.

get the 40d with a wider lens then keep as back up body or sell when the new 5D comes out. The 40d and the lens won't depricate much in a year as they are new models. I think you are stopping yourself as intuitively you don't want to invest in a 5d that will be obsolete soon enough.
-
I wanted a FF but had to go for a 40D as the 5D doesn't have the fps etc, surely there are many like me for whom the 5D price range is the only way they can get to a FF body. They are trying to segmentise the market and preserve high margins on FF cameras and get a high volume low margin segment with crop sensors.

The 17-55/2.8 is go for a lot used so its a no risk situation at the moment, can always put it on ebay and get the money back if remorse kicks in.
-
Les, don't want to make your buyers remorse any worse but take a look at the review on photozone.net for the cheaper lens. You could sell you lens on ebay for what you bought if for, most places are out of stock. I still haven't worked out how to best deal with wide angle on a 1.6 x sensor.

My film camera was not canon but Pentax (very old), I'll just battle on with the f/3.5. I find
my shots are better with primes anyhow as I don't get lazy and stand in one spot. Thanks for
talking me out of the purchase...

No I have the IS version, bought 12/24/07 from BH.
I have the 50mm f/1.8 and the 28mm f/1.8 and I am happy with those, but have a
inferiority complex about my f/3.5 IS zoom. The 50mm f/28 is only USD 70 and its a great
lens and for that who cares whether it only lasts a few years. If I could just use primes I
would but want a zoom for when I'm in the city.
If I am questioning whether its worth the extra USD 830 to upgrade from the f/3.5 IS to
the f/2.8 IS then I'm sure many others are. perhaps if they put a L in the name....

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS vs Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
I got the f/3.5 lens as a basic lens when I upgraded from film to a canon 40d
last year. The lens is ok but I prefer prime lens with larger aperture around
f/1.8 for low light situations and portraits.
If I have to have a zoom is it worth the upgrade to the Canon EF-S 17-55mm
f/2.8 USM IS to get the larger aperture. The review in photozone.de is pretty
good for both lens, however the f/2.8 is about USD 1000 whereas the f/3.5 is
USD 170. In fact photozone raves about the f/3.5. Should I just stay with the
f/3.5 and place my money elsewhere.

If you are intent on a purchase I would say go for the 40d, the extra few bucks would be well
invested in the newer model IMO.

If you have a important shot and you are not sure of the wb setting and/or exposure, set the
bracketing as an insurance policy, if you get it wrong you always have the bracketed shots
that may turn out better. Obviously slows down your camera though.
You can also merge the bracketed shots into one.
-
Once you start shooting with the 50mm f/1.8 you won't like your picture quality with the 17-85 4-5.6 or 70-300 4-5.6 even with the flash indoors. Although those lens are fine in decent light for most.

With the canon manuafacturers warranty I understand you can register it anywhere in the world and the send it to your nearest Canon dealer if anything goes wrong. However if it is a grey market import only the store were you buy it can cover the warranty so you'd have to send it to the store in England if anything went wrong with it.

I live in NY and I am British. Remember when you look at prices quoted in the USA they do not include the state sales tax which in NY is 8%, but you often don't pay that when you order from outside the state (but not always). Even so its still cheaper, I justbought the 430ex last week for USD 209 from a retailer on ebay with USD 9 shipping and no sales tax (not gray market). MSRP (RRP) is USD 300 so you are paying around that in Britain.
