I received the used Capture NX 1.0.0 today. I had no troubles with installation and key code ( yes, you're right, if the
previous owner uninstalled it then the second owner can use). However, when finished, I could not open the NEF from
my D80.
Made a Google search then found a thread on your forum photo.net, with the same problem question and the answer
was that I need to download and update to v1.3.0. ( From update window of my v1.0.0, the update is not available.). I
had to go online and download 1.3.0 from Nikon site:

As Bill said, I could not update directly from 1.0.0 to 1.3.4, instead I had to go to 1.3.0 first. What's complicated
issue, Nikon !
So, if you have D80 and NX 1.0.0: install it, input the license code, go to Nikon website above, download 1.3.0 then
install it. Now you can open D80's NEF. And then you can go further to 1.3.4.
These updates are free.
Thanks all of you. You guys are awesome! Hope this helps others too.

Thanks, Michael. Just made an order so don't need the datas anymore... just wait it arrives. Thanks.
-
Dan, thanks! I will email you a full size sample when I have a chance this weekend.
IMO, this lens is superb in daylight when the focus is much much faster than in very low light, and very sharp through all aperture opens, even at 2.8
I will shoot some at 2.8 and 140mm then email you.

Louise,
Do you have a flash like SB-600 or 800 ?
A flash will free the subjects, a tripod will free your hand, and a high shutter speed will free both but you are not always can get it !
The best: a flash +a tripod !!

I think you may invest some more to get the SB-600 although it's a bit bulky than SB-400.
I think SB-400 power is till not strong and high enough to avoid long lenses shadow. I ever bought SB-400 ( then returned to exchange the SB-600) so I know its output is very little stronger than the buitl-in flash. And more disadvantage, the SB-400 can not bounce lights to ceiling when you set your camera at vertical dimension ( portrait frame). (However, it's very compact anyway)
Take advantages of bouncing flash in 3 dimensions when you use an external flash like SB600/800.

VR = vibration reduction
-
Sorry, I would correct my above input: 17-55 does NOT have VR.
-
Louise,
The reason is the 17-55 does have VR while your 18-200 does. VR helps a lot when you shoot in low light condition without tripods, when your camera set the shutter speed longer to get enough light, then hand shake makes blurring. However, when you shoot in direct sunlight, set larger perture open ( ex. A mode at 2.8), the S become very fast, then reduce the hand shake issue. I have no problem with hand shake if speed is faster than 1/200s. With 18-200 VR, I can slower S to even at 1/30s !! VR does work!
You may also want to read some techniques of handling a heavy lenses like 17-55, and get a good tripod!
I have 18-200 , and 17-55 is in my dream list! Enjoy your lens.
-
It makes shadow on my D80 as well when I shoot at wide angle. When you use a long lens like that, I would reccomend to buy SB-600. It make much different images.
18-200 VR + SB-600 is the only way if you don't want to change lenses! I have and love both of them.

I'm thinking about ordering an used 24-85mm 2.4-4.0 ( the used price is very reasonable now) since I read quite
many good reviews that it is very sharp and nice lens for portraits and macro.
Could anyone give me some aperture datas at the focal lengths of 35mm, 50mm, 60mm and 70mm ?
I appreciate greatly your time and inputs.
-
Jose,
Congrats and enjoy your great D700 ! I have 50mm 1.8 but can not produce that sharp picture with my D80!
-
Thank you so much for all of your advices.
I'm living in the U.S. and this is the first time I ordered an used software ( just didn't look at seller note used condition while biding!) so didn't know the license handling.
The seller said the same thing as yours and he uninstalled the program so hope it will be fine. It's the 1.1 version. I have used the trial version included with my D80 box and the program is so great that I decided to purchase the licensed copy.
Last question: can I use the purchased serial number to input in the trial version or I have to uninstall the trial then install the licensed copy?
Thank you so much!
-
While in hurry, I bid and won an used Capture NX on eBay at $81 including shipping, which I did not know that the
seller listed as used ( uninstalled and sold).
Will I have any problem when I install the software? Does this violate the license? I thought all software are
brand-new to be qualified for listing on eBay. I'm really stupid.
Please advise. Thank you very much!

"With a telephoto equipped with a tripod collar you would rotate the entire camera around the lens tripod collar rather than flopping the camera over sideways, so that particular problem is resolved"
Great advice!!! Thank you so much, Lex, and all , for your great and very helpful suggestions.

Wayne,
Enjoy your new 18-200 ! I also like it.
After reading many good review about 16-85, I ordered it last week and made side-by-side comparation.
The result?
http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00QIxk
16-85 went back to the store, 18-200 stayed with me, and may be very long.
16-85 is very nice, very sharp lens but it can not compensate me the loss of the 85-200. Also, it's over-priced!
18-200 is not a bad lens as some people who dislike it said.. It is under-valuated !! When I were holding the 16-85 as all-around in the park, I felt I miss 18-200 very much!!!!
-
Today:
16-85 went back to the store. 18-200 stays with me, may be very long !
Anyway, 16-85 is a very nice lens but IMO,no lens can replace the 18-200, not because the IQ but because the convenience which the 18-200 was made for.
I will get a firend for it someday: 17-55

Could you tell me what is different between 190XPROB and 190 XDB?
Thanks a lot!
-
Sorry, I would correct my post:
1/Bogen 190 XDB ( ballhead included?)
2/ Slik 700DX ( with 322 RC2 ballhead combo??) or which ballhead you recommend?
Thanks a lot!
-
Thank you so much for your great recommendations.I'm in another hard decision since all of your recommended
tripods are great and in my budget range!! I can not go with carbon fiber for now because my budget went with
lenses recently, but definately wil get one in future. Thanks.
So, I'm narrowing to:
1/ Bogen 190XPROB Tripod Legs and Slik 700DX
Does above package from BH include the ball-head?
2/ Bogen / Manfrotto 190XDB Tripod Legs (Black) with 322RC2 Grip Action Ballhead? Which ballhead would you
recommend me to use with?
Slik 400DX is at great price, but it's out-stock at BH now
The 190XDB combo is great, lighter while Slik 700DX is cheaper.I may go with the lighter.
Both look fix my budget and needs.
Thanks a lot! You guys are awesome!

Which good tripod in the range $100-$200 would you recommend for a heavy lens like 70-200 2.8?
Thanks a lot!

I played around with the 16-85 today in the park. I think the 16-85 is VERY sharp, about 15% more than the 18-200.
On 4x6 or 5x7inches prints, I believe they're not different as Hugh said.( will print some tomorrow) .Also, tthe16-84 is less overexposured on my D80.
IMO,the difference is not huge enough to compensate me the lossing range and the very high price.
Ok....I would buy 16-85 if it were around $450-500... so wait a little more......the price's dropping now...:-))
You may want to download the full size of 2 samples of the two lenses here:

( on tripod with remote control)
-
Hugh, thanks!
Before getting this 16-85, I do know the 16-85 is sharper than the 18-200.
However, the thing I want to find out is that how much it's much sharper and the image quality is much better than 18-200 enough for me to abandon the convenience and the range of 18-200.
You are lucky to have them both! I wish I could but one has to go.
-
I will post side-by-side pictures. I'm going to go out the park with both of them today.
My initial thought after the first day is that the 16-85 is sharper and the exposure is more correct but the difference seems not worth for the $580 and lossing the range of 85-200mm.However, I need much more tests and let all you know.
I don't have but I think the 17-55 is definately outperforms this lens.
Thanks.
